I’m waiting for DS to finish reading a short story so we can discuss it and wanting to go do more entertaining things. *Certain People* are being a bit much today so I’m gonna hold me tongue and put the phone down because its not actually that serious. ;)

I’ve been preparing for DS’s braces this week and he basically has a box of food stuff just for him. So many suggestions we got are things he doesn’t typically like; like mashed potatoes. So I bought packets of instant ones with flavors like ranch or 4 cheese. I got yougrt smoothies. Cream of wheat. Spaghettios. Lipton noodle soups. Mostly convenience foods but hopefully more palatable than my typical lower sodium, lower saturated fat choices. Stuff we can throw in the nutribullet should be better. I’m praying I’m over preparing. I don’t normally consider him a truly picky eater though.

Are you a picky eater?

I definitely am not. I enjoy the experience of eating and trying new things. Trying to keep it within the ever changing definition of healthy eating is frustrating; but food is more than nourishment to me. Its a way to experience different cultures, engage with people around you and sometimes find comfort.

DD is fun to eat with because she will also try almost anything. DS is adventurous with seafood but not always everything else. As a baby he ate everything. Maybe this experience will help him step out to try more too.

I am. For one thing, I don't really like herbs or spices or any unusual flavor which eliminates a lot of foods. Every year I print 52 market lists in January, because I know that I am going to buy the same foods over and over, so it is only a matter of what needs to be replaced.

This has nothing to do with not eating enough food.;)

I have actually had waiters in restaurants which we frequent just bring me the same food without taking the order as I always have a go to item or two.

I loved cafeterias when more of them were up and running because you could get a little dish of this or a little dish of that.

Braces? I remember those! Your teeth are SO sensitive and sore after they tighten them. I think I ate a lot of Lipton noodle soup.

I was picky as a kid, but I’m not now. Although in a sense, I guess I might be because there are things I avoid because they aren’t that healthy. I want them; I just don’t eat them. :)

I would say not really? There are a few things I don't like: mushrooms, nuts (unless they are inside of a dish), cheese (unless it is mixed into a dish or in queso form), water chestnuts, celery, and I'm really picky with chip or cracker flavors.

Pretty much anything else I either like or would try once. There are probably some international dishes that wouldn't be appealing to me, but for everyday life that's not an issue.

Yes, in that I have GERD and have to be careful. I like sultanas, for instance, but these days I can't eat anything with them in, because I get painful heartburn almost immediately. Other things may or may not have that effect, but I loathe them anyway - anything with pepper or other hot stuff. I have zero tolerance for anything like that in my mouth. I didn't grow up with such food and get extremely annoyed with people who think I should be eating it or that it's "timid" not to. No, I don't equate pain with pleasure. I'm also not keen on the extreme saltiness (it's the preservatives, apparently) in some meats, like sausages or meat patties. Those go straight in the bin when I taste them. I also prefer to avoid the giant serves of pumpkin we get, because sweet with savoury isn't my thing. Oh, and onions. Hate the smell and the taste.

I'm not that interested in food, tbh. A daily pill that had all the nutrients and kept any hunger pangs at bay would be fine!

I say I'm not that picky but then when it comes down to it I realize I'm pickier than I thought. For one I eat a strictly vegetarian diet so anything with meat or fish is out of the question. I love ethnic food because it gives me many options.

MoochNNoodles MoochNNoodles Is your son getting the Invisalign braces? It's my understanding they're more comfortable because they don't have wires and brackets. And you can remove them for eating, brushing your teeth and sports. I sure wish they had them when I was a kid and got braces.

Not really, although there are some foods that I wouldn't touch with an 11-foot pole, such as mushrooms, liver, clams, oysters, calamari, parsnips, or Brussels sprouts. Someone else can have my share of those.

I guess I am... mostly about meat. I don't eat game or meat on bones. Dont like fatty meat. I will only eat some fish and no seafood. Don't like offal. But, a lot of that is easy to avoid so I don't have to travel with my own food or anything. Except for the one time my in-laws made a seafood lasagna! 😆

Eating "healthy" would be so much easier if I didn't like cheese. :disappointed:

Since I started restricting my sodium a few years ago some things are just too salty now! I've always preferred unsalted pretzels and cut the salt in recipes. It's just more noticeable now.😖

No he has to get the metal kind. I think because his lower jaw needs to come forward. His teeth are mostly straight and not crowded; its just his top front teeth protrude and lower sit back. I know we will be happy he did it later. Thankfully insurance helps some. And the payment plan its decent. Except for the first monthly payment starting right after the down payment.

sweet with savoury isn't my thing
This is a massive deal breaker for me, too. It eliminates entire kinds of cuisines.

I worked with adults who got braces when they could finally pay for their own. It is really great that you are doing this now. I had braces as a kid for the same reason as your son and the pain did go away after a couple of days.

Thanks I hope he has an easy time with this. He says the hook are bugging his gums. He did good getting them on though. I did notice a few adults in there getting theirs adjusted so that was nice to see.

Ditto. And any cuisines that feature hot food - Indian, Mexican and the like - are out. I would never go to Indian or Mexican restaurants. There'd be nothing I could safely eat (and frankly not much I'd fancy - I loathe the smell of curries etc and won't have even the "mild curried sausages" they serve at the village, because reheating them in the microwave stinks my unit out).

I was a trifle surprised to find I enjoyed my first bag of crisps in ages recently! Maybe it's because I expected it. I don't expect meat to taste hugely salty. I want the choice to salt it or not.

i once read a story about a woman stuck in an avalanche who died of hypothermia b/c she refused to drink Tang or something b/c it had sugar. In extremes, I hope I’d be resourceful, generous & omnivorous, though I tend to avoid all types of red meat.

I am picky about certain foods but it's more about texture than flavor. I am less tolerant of heat than I used to be. I don't want things that are so spicy that all I get is heat.
