My teenage DD just came wandering through them room staring at the floor with a scowl on her face so I started scowling back while raising and lowering my eyebrows. She noticed and cracked up and said "Oh I was just doing math in my head..." Ok then!!



Can you do mental-math?



I can manage more than I used to; but I do better if I see math written down or just use a good ol calculator. Teaching the kids helped a lot I think just with grading math fact sheets.

Nope, mental math is not something I have ever been able to do.

I can do a lot of math in regards to pharmacology in my head. Other than that, no! DH is a math genius. I made a terrible score in the math section of my college entrance exam. The English, reading, and science saved me!

Nope. I have the math equivalent of dyslexia.... numbers and I don't get along. It took me until I was in grade 4-6 before I could read an analog clock and I STILL have issues sometimes. Calculators and digital clocks are my best friends .

I have a love hate relationship with higher Math, I can do arithmetic in my head. My dad was an electrical engineering major, he had to drop out because the Great Depression started and there just wasn't any money to continue. He pushed me to take all the higher math and science that was offered. Of course, I wanted to please my father and I slogged through all of it, but I am not one of those people that it comes easy for.

I can still do it in my head but usually resort to paper if it is complex. Throughout high school and college math was one of my easiest courses and I always enjoyed it.

No I can't. I'm lucky I can do it with a calculator.

I can do mental math up to a point then take out my calculator. I remember when my kids were learning division in elementary school and they made the process a lot harder than how I learned it. So I asked the teacher and she said it was ok to teach them my method, as long as they get the right answer that was all that concerned her.

Nope. But my husband can do mental math at at lightning speed and accurate.

Absolutely, I can. Math was easy for me as far back as I can remember.

When I was in elementary school the person at the head of the class , who was the teacher always said this every year until I was fortunate to leave:
Boys can't do English
Girls can't do Math
Seems like a bad way for either gender to be treated.

Your teacher would have loved me, because I can do math, yes, but I'm also fair to middling at English. A teacher like the one you describe would never have flown at the small school I attended, back when I attended it. An attitude like that is a bunch of.........what a male cow leaves in the pasture.

My math teacher was absolutely terrifying, and was finally expelled from my school for trying to find a sneaky way to make them pay for all of his phone bills. Needless to say I was so petrified I was lucky I learned anything at all! (Although for some reason the quadratic equation is permanently stamped in my brain—perhaps out of sheer fear).

If you had raised your hand for an english question you would have been told " Boys can't do English" and she would have picked a girl to answer the question.A lot of parents complained but nothing was done. Lucky for me I was put in another school half way through the year and had a really good dedicated teacher with none of the nonsense.

A little. Like, I still have the times tables memorized, and can do simple addition and subtraction, but anything too complicated and I need paper.

I can do a little bit (calculate a tip, calculate tax, add up a small list of items total price (about three things, not more than that, unless some are the same price so I can multiply the number of things at that price and treat it as one).
