I’m very off schedule today. It was supposed to be our first day back to school after winter break but we ended up with a snowday because even DH didn’t have to go to work. As homeschoolers we typically take “sun-days” instead of snow-days.” But with DH home its a distraction for everyone. Plus several friends and family members insisted I needed to let DD have her birthday off! I couldn’t keep my eyes open to do lesson plans last night anyway. And I took an unexpected 3 hour nap late this morning…so maybe we all needed today off.

What do you do when you need a day of rest?

I used to love naps but I haven’t been able to nap lately. (Or sleep through the night…:hmmm:) Typically I want quiet time in my room. I’ll stretch out on my bed with a book or my kindle fire. DD might come in to chat. DH wanders by for the bathroom and remind me of his mischievous side. But other than that its usually quiet. I’ve been looking at types of puzzle books to try too. My grandma always kept crossword puzzles around with a yellow pencil and I liked doing a few questions for her to find later. I’m also working slowly on a jigsaw but I need to move my setup with school starting again. I took over DS’s school space over break. Or I could make him sit at the table again?

Same as vansX2 vansX2 said! I only do a couple of hours volunteering a week, and the rest of the time is mine. It can get busy with going to knitting group at least twice a week, and fitting in appointments and the like, but easy to take time off and have naps if I want. I usually crash on Saturday after spending all Friday out.

Reading is a relaxing activity for me. I don't take naps as it cuts into my ability to fall asleep at night. If I want to leave the house, I will go to a local botanical garden or park by myself. A friend who is an excellent artist, which I am not even in the ball park, just introduced my to neurographic art which I find very relaxing.

I've found myself craving physical rest, when what I really need is mental rest. For physical rest, I read, sleep, or do something passive like watch TV or listen to an interesting podcast. If this doesn't help, I'll set my alarm for one hour and allow myself to doze. I've found that if something is bothering me, when I do this it keeps coming back to the front of my mind and when I'm zoned out I find it easier to brainstorm ways to deal with it.
I've also found that playing with my cats and dogs is a great form of mental rest. With Tag, and now Livie, agility is a great way to get some mental rest because as we were/are trying to figure out how to run a particular course, everything else in the world ceases to exist.
For both types of rest, sometimes something I can sit and do with my hands helps. Knitting is wonderful for this, as is some types of gardening (that don't require a lot of movement or heavy lifting.)

I take a nap during the day (feels like such a luxury!) or I will spend the majority of the day watching TV and doing a puzzle.

I seem to find Old Time Radio very soothing, anything from You Bet Your Life to The Whistler. Stretching, Yoga, Meditaction, and reading.

I'm not a nap taker for the most part...I'd never sleep at night if I did.I usually fix myself a cup of hot tea and sit and watch the birds,or write to my sister.Sometimes I'll watch something that interests me on tv.

Ok, so this might sound nuts but it truly works for me when I need a day of rest.
I will get up at the crack of dawn, clean, run errands, take care of anything around the home that I had been putting off. I do all of this as quickly as possible. I guess you could say I have the "cleaning zoomies" :flail:
Then I have breakfast, crash on the couch and either read or binge watch movies or favorite tv series.
By doing all that cleaning, errands etc, it allows me to truly rest.

A day of rest means relaxing with a warm cup of coffee and watching a movie on TCM. Or going on a long walk on a nature trail.

That's how I do it too! I get guilt free rest in the afternoon after feeling like I've had an accomplished morning!

If I need a nap, I take it, even if it means going back to bed. I didn’t used to nap because I felt guilty to be sleeping when there were chores to do. My oncologist said, “Listen to your body. If you need to rest for a while, do it.”
