I`m taking over Friday`s thread for a while. If anyone is interested in doing Friday`s QOD please send a PM to any of the mods.

:thanks:

Today`s question;

What do you have in your home that is older than you are?

I don`t have any actual antiques, but I do have my grandmother`s engagement ring. She got married in 1938, when she was 19 and my grandfather was was 23. I think everything else in the house is much newer than I am.

I have a history of the U.S. Navy, published in 1918, a dessert plate commemorating the centennial of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad from the 1920s, and a ring that belonged to my namesake uncle who was killed in WWII. I also have various coins, but don't really count them.

My mom's "freindship' ring, given to her by my dad. During WWII the government gave out a tiny bible to all service members. I have my dads, with the foreword from FDR.. And a couple of pictures of my parents.. One of my Dad in uniform, and one of my Mom, about the same time.

My husband. That counts right? 😇

I do have a couple small pieces of jewelry that belonged to my grandma. Her engagement ring (missing the stone) and a cultured pearl necklace she bought herself when she had her first job. Pearls were her favorite. I wore them as my “something old” for my own wedding but she gave them to me for my 12th birthday and my mom had them restrung. DD inherited a necklace that my other grandmother’s boyfriend gave her.

I have a bench in my foyer that was my grandparents too. I’m not sure exactly how old but probably from the 50s. Then I have a couple antique tools as decorations that belonged to my grandpa. A small wooden level (he was a big woodworker) and small wire cutters he engraved his initials on.

Ooo…I have some small pottery pieces my mom made that I *think* are older than me. And an end table waiting to be refinished that also came from my grandparents attic. And vintage Christmas ball ornaments from them also. I have some of their Christmas things on display in my china cabinet every year. I hope to inherit a few of my other grandma’s Christmas things so they can be put out every year too. It makes them feel like part of the holidays still.

I have a small side table in the living room. I also have a wooden chair that my Grandfather cut the legs down so it was just the right height to put his foot on and tie his shoes. We call it the shoe chair.

My husband recently bought a gone with the wind parlor lamp that is 140 years old and he has a book from 1793. The oldest thing I have is my father's pinky ring and his medals from WWII. I also have my mom's engagement and wedding ring.

Not so old as neely neely husband's 18th century book but I do have books from early in the 20th century prior to my birth. Photograph of my father as a schoolboy at gymnasium. Photograph of his parents. Photograph of my mother as a young girl with her father at the Socialist Forward Ball at Madison Square Garden in 1913. Oil painting of the artist's mistress - he was a friend of my father and when he married his wife refused to have the painting in their home so he gave it to my parents. I had always been fascinated by the painting - wherever you were her eyes seemed to be looking at you.

Several things, as I have a lot of hand me down furniture as well as a love for vintage/antique shopping.

Some special things are jewelry that was my grandmother's, a poster that my grandma gave me from when she was a teacher, a rocking chair my grandpa loved, and both a Hoosier cabinet and old German rolltop desk that my dad bought before I was born and then refurbished for me.

Also, my furnace is apparently older than I am by a fair amount - I think it's from the 70s? I just had the blower replaced but it is otherwise going strong so we'll see how long it lasts!

I have jewelry that belonged to my parents and a couple of pieces of furniture which are probably at least 100 years old. A sideboard, a small bookcase, a dining room table. They are just pieces of furniture that have remained useful and so I have kept them. The actual house is older than I am.

That lamp and book are quite the find!!!
I have a few of my Grandfathers WW2 memorabilia, and my Mom has a treasure trove of things like that. With a little work she could turn a room of her house into a museum!
I think the oldest thing I have is a very old fashioned music cabinet which was my Great Great Grandmothers wedding anniversary gift. She got it somewhere between 1900 and 1903 (I can't remember exactly), so I'm not sure exactly what year it was constructed but I really love it. Apparently she was quite the piano player and could play ragtime with the best of them!

My grandmother's watch. A planter we got when my MIL passed. It has a plant in it, which has now been replanted and doing well. My husband has some things from his father. I'm sure there are other things.

Quite a few things since both my parents are hoarders. But I wouldn't keep any of it after they are gone. I prefer brand new stuff, cleaner, less germs.
