Question for Breeders

Hi. I am wondering what your kitten selling policies are. Do you neuter first? Do you microchip? Is that all things the purchaser is supposed to do?

These questions came about when a Bengal cat was recently found with no chip and intact. The only breeder I have known is a veterinarian who would neuter and chip before sale. I just don’t know if this is the norm or not.

Not a breeder but can answer.

It depends.

Some breeders will neuter/spay before sending kittens home. They are concerned about people using their cats for breeding purpose, rightly so.

Other have a stipulation in their contract that the cat has to be fixed by a certain age. My Maine Coon was the latter - breeder would release her registration to me once I provided proof of her being spayed. She suggested around 7 months, I did it at 6 to be on the safe side.

I don't know the reasons why one would choose which method. There is some question and controversy about early vs late spay/neuter and I assume breeders all have their own opinion on which is better for the specific breed or circumstances. I wouldn't look down on a breeder who does not do this beforehand. I know my breeder is very picky where the kittens wind up so perhaps she's just a good judge of character and intent.

As for chipping I think most leave that to the new owner being the chip has to be registered. If it's under the breeders name it won't do much good if the cat gets lost at it's new home; or at least will take longer to track them down. Chipping is frequently done when the cat is spayed/neutered since they are under anesthesia making it an easier process. I know ownership can be transferred but I bet there's plenty that neglect to do so.

Both of my Boys came Neutered. It was a requirement of the breeder. The only issue is that I should have delayed getting Jackpot at 12 weeks.As he has a bad habit chewing on plastic, foam. Perhaps if he would have remained unfixed longer he wouldn't have This bad habit. I received his housemate (Miles) at 10 months and there's no issues
