As many of you are aware, I have a new kitty.. Yes, he needs socialization. The Vet estimates him to be: "at the most, a year" old. He would prefer a higher protein food rather than Fancy Feast or Friskies. He suggested Royal Canon, Hill's or Purina Plus. I am really not a fan of all. Since my history with food, is primarily prescription food for my past 2 kitties, I am wondering what is a good food?

Tux has tried: Hill's kitten- nope, RC kitten-nope, Purina Plus-- nope.. Now I am trying Wellness, which is a nope..
He has been fed FF and Friskies. Now, that he has the luxury of being in a home, instead of the streets and confined to a cubby in the shelter, he is getting fussy. Tux wants only the dry food. Since I am unsure of his age, but thought he was about a year old, I am feeding him Purina Plus Kitten chicken. He loves it; wants it exclusively.
I do not feel that a constant diet of only dry food is good, especially for a male kitty; even thought he drinks a lot of water.

Any thoughts? I do not want to keep switching his food around. I do not want him to become fussier. I had that with Artie. It was a horror show. I would like to stay with one or 2 lines of food-- wet and dry..

Thanks in advance

Hi. Tux is sure a cutie!

I, too, am not a real fan of the foods that you mentioned, which is what most vets tend to recommend. But, does Tux like FF? Personally, speaking, I don't consider it to be a lower protein food. And, there are so many textures, that one or more of them may appeal to Tux. So, I would start there.

I think a lot of cats would eat kitten food over other foods, so not surprised Tux likes it so much. You may have to wean him off it to help get him to eat other food!

:yeah:

Kitten food is full of proteins and that is why growing kittens needs kitten food. The other alternative is feed your kitty with food labeled 'For All Life Stages'. This one is pretty good as it's an all rounder. my boy is on food labeled 'For All Life Stages' since he was a kitten till now. He's coming to 8 years old this December.

But of course easiest way is feed your kitty what she likes and you'll have less worries and problems looking for the right food for her. Most important thing is that she is eating. Wet food is best as it is full of proteins and minerals and keeps them hydrated.

Tux is lovely! :hearthrob::redheartpump:

When my cat peaches was 5 weeks old she was wellness core mostly. Since the price has risen, ff classics and sheba. The ff c lassics is high in protein. Turkey&giblets has better protein than the other classics. She also likes orijen

Maybe rather than sticking with one type of food, try introducing him to a wide variety so he doesn't get picky,
My Mitzi stopped eating last week but since treatment, she's now eating everything I put down for her ...
high protein chicken thigh (simply airfried) raw kangaroo/beef mince ( pet food grade with added taurine, vitamins etc)
variety of FF pates, Pro plan, Weruva etc . I'm thankful that she's not fussy, especially when she's recovering from being unwell,
when we don't need more stress
btw, Tux is gorgeous, looks like my Mitzi 'cept for the dotty nose

My cats have been eating a variety of different foods for a while now. At first, they were all on home-cooked food, which I put supplements and chicken liver in. After an injury in my spine, I could not do that. And we had already added some dry food after taking my outdoor cats in who were eating dry food.

Now they are eating a mixture of meow mix, orijen and Dr Elsie’s, all dry and grain free except for meow mix. We went back to the home cooked food, which I did about three weeks ago. They were also eating fancy feast pate canned which is grain free and treats of chicken etc. here and there and some bonkers treats. Treats of tuna etc.

I’m having a hard time with Xena because he does not want to eat the home-cooked food very much. He’ll only eat a couple of bites, and then he looks at me to get his dry food.

In addition Quinn runs to try and eat everybody else’s home-cooked food before or after he gobbles his own up on the kitchen table.

Cinnamon is eating the home-cooked food which he would never do in the past. I hope to get Xena back on it for the most part because he gets soft stool now from any type of dry food.

When Zena came inside, he had Giardia, however, the remaining soft stool was cured eventually when I started him on the home-cooked food. But then eventually it came back. I think when we started adding The Dry in again- now that he is addicted to dry food again, I don’t know what I’m going to do.

Anyway, those are some of the better brands Orijen and Dr. Elsie and there are a lot of other brands if you’re looking for a higher quality grain free food. Orijen does have legumes and beans though. Dr. Elsy chicken is high protein so you don’t need to give them as much of it. Recently, though they did add some pork into it. So it has changed.

Whatever you do do not switch your cutie too fast to another food because that can cause runs.

I've been doing Iams. Had good results with that. Consistent energy, soft shiny coat and consistent litter habits.

Pro Plan has a few different protein sources and lines....not sure which you tried. My guys switched well from the kitten to the urinary line, then to iams urinary when Purina added beef fat.

I've had a heck of a time finding dry foods with no pea protein. Fromm now makes one (adult gold...we recieved a sample).

It seams like expensive brands are high fat.less expensive are high protein or 50/ 50 but not as good ingredients. So a little of both.

Haven't looked much into it but I've heard good things about Tiki Cat's High Protein dry food.

I have 2 kittens so did some research and Tiki Cat, Weruva kitten, Feline Natural, Wellness Core Kitten are all good choices. They are pricey, so I add in some FF classics and Sheba kitten to help with cost
