My cat Mr. Chips is 6 years old. I have noticed that he is getting clumped together tufts of fur on his back and side. I have been cutting the bigger ones out with scissors because they seem to hurt him. (He gets angry when I touch him) but I notice that he just keeps getting more and more. An old cat of my mothers had this happen, and then she died later on. Could this be a sign of somthing to come? Should I take him to the vet or is this normal? I just don't like seeing him uncomfortable.
If anyone has an experience with this problem I would sure love to hear it

I started a gentle daily brushing routine with him, and also started adding a little bit of cod liver oil to his dry food. It took about a month, but no more matty hair. Now all the kitties get some cod liver oil in their dry food and their coats are really sleek and shiny.
