Mum and kittens are doing great, they’ve put on at least 10% of their body weight a day, they’ll be 5 days old tomorrow!

We have two girls and three boys (we think)

Here’s a feeding frenzy!

It’s been a while, is there an ‘ideal weight’ for the kittens per week? Should they continually put on 10% of their body weight a day? We’re just wanting to make sure that they’re all growing and feeding properly!

Also, how often should mum be in the nest with them?

They are 13 days old today, so the goal weight at 2 weeks is to weigh about 8 ounces. At 3 weeks it’s 12 ounces, and at 4 weeks it’s 16 ounces, or one pound. They should then continue to gain about a pound a month for the next few months.

Mom is allowed out of the nest for breaks while they sleep. The kittens can go longer between nursing sessions as they get bigger.

Okay that’s good to know (being in unit UK we’ve been doing them in grams) we believe they’re all doing okay weight wise but have been concerned a little, some of them are at 8 ounces already (used a converter so I assume it’s correct).

We have one kitten, which we assume to be the runt of the litter who was born at 90g (3.17oz) who is now 189g (6.98oz) as of day 12, is this any cause for concern? She’s nursing great, moving around and meowing great too.

Another thing is mum doesn’t spend a lot of time in the nest, she’s in there maybe 5-6 times a day for 30-45 minutes, does this sound like enough? Sometimes we have to carry her over to the nest if she hasn’t been in for a while (over 2 hours).

We’re feeding her 4 sachets of kitten wet food a day and she occasionally grazes on her dry food. So we think she’s eating enough. She’s started to have diarrhoea too, nothing has changed in her diet, should this pass soon? We’re due to de-worm her but finding a suitable one for a nursing cat is proving difficult, anything we google doesn’t state if it’s safe or not (with it being a sunday for us, we haven’t been able to call the vets).

The runt sounds fine. Runts are runts because they are smaller. catch up down the road. The runt of my litter turned into my biggest cat.

Mom cats instinctively know when to feed. It sounds like she’s doing her job well.

As far as the diarrhea, if her food hasn’t changed it may just be her hormones causing it. Hopefully it will pass.

All sounds pretty good!

We’ve tried boiled chicken with her just so she gets enough water intake, she’s just been again and this time it was very watery, the past few she’s done have been more soft but had no form, would it be worthwhile getting something for her to help her with it or hope it passes?

Thank you for your advice and answers on everything you said!!

Sometimes a teaspoonful of canned pumpkin (Not pie mix) will firm up a stool if she’ll eat it. The chicken should help.

If it’s still loose when your vet opens up they can give an anti-diarrheal med.

Stay away from fish cat food right now, and only give her one dish of kitten formula to drink. Too much can cause diarrhea if you’ve been giving more.

I checked on google and couldn’t really find anything about it, it’s 100% safe for cats and it’ll help with her poops?
