Hi. My cats are indoor only but one escaped better than Houdini. She's pregnant. She hasn't been in heat since she got out. She's gained weight larger nipples. I have questions since I never dealt with this before.
A couple days ago all around her nipples is full of milk I guess. Is this what is meant by enlarged mammary glands?
Has anyone else had a first time mother cat go past due?
Thank you

Can you tell me how it would feel if I feel the kittens?

Hi animallover, gestation is anywhere from 63 to 70 days, so simply count the days from when she got out. The babies get more active about 48 before birth, if you can't see them moving you can place your hand gently on her stomach to feel them. When she does give birth, it's a good idea to sit with her and make sure that a placenta comes out with each kitten. yes, the area around the nipples tend to get a bit puffier just before birthing. Some cats will want to stay close to their human as the time of birthing gets nearer.

If her mammaries are filling with milk, she’s close, but it could still be a few days. Do you recall when she got out and how long she was gone?
That stinker was only out a few hours. It's been 70 days. She has been washing herself all day. Her whole body & her privates. I gave her 3 different nesting spots with nice soft blankets and she's rejected them all. Can you please tell me what it feels like if the kittens are moving? How much longer do you think? 70 days is long but it's her first time. She's acting fine. Her temperature hasn't gone below 100°. Thank you

Most cats do not go to a nest until time to deliver. Kitten movement will look like little lumps that move around, however; if she’s near the end it’s harder to see movement because the kittens are bigger and more squished, and also because she may have dropped — which is when the kittens move closer to the birth canal and mama cat looks less big on the sides but her belly hangs lower underneath.

Contractions will look like waves or ripples down her sides.

I put one of the blankets on the floor near my bed & she got right on it but now she's in a nesting box washing herself nonstop. She keeps going back and forth. She hasn't done one thing the way everything I read said she should & she's been behind on every stage. Her temperature never went down but she's acting like she's about to have them. Any advice? Thank you so much for all the info! I don't think I'm sleeping tonight.

Don't worry about yoru multiple posts, we've all been there! Yes she can sleep during all this, really, teh only way to tell if everything is normal is how she acts. If she is not yowling, or hiding, or acting distressed and nervous, everything is fine. Pacing is normal, she doesn't know what is happening. Please keep us informed, all the luck!

Thank you so much! Maybe multiple of the same post because I only slept 3 hours. She's in & out of the nesting box,the blanket on the floor & my bed. She's being more loving than normal which is lots & grooming almost constantly. I don't think she's really sleeping but more resting. I can't believe she's really having babies! I hope she does well. I love her so much. I'm grateful for all the information.

I know, we get SO nervous at times like these, I am literally sick when I have to trap cats to have them spayed. I will pray for your little girl….

I guess I don't know what that trapping cats has to do with my cat having babies any time.

I meant anytime anyone worries about their cat going through something, whether having babies or having surgery, you can get literally sick with worry.i was saying I understand how you are feeling.

its common they go longer than theory says! even 1
70 days.
Do you think I should shave some of her stomach? She's long haired. She's trying to rip it out I think. I shave one of my dogs and used to be a groomer.

My goodness. If you do that how do you know you're not trapping someone's pet?

They are definitely feral. They sleep and eat here, they just don’t let you get close. They were literally starving when they showed up. I have neutered and spayed probably a hundred cats in my life. They are SO much better off. The females are no longer having 3 litters in a summer, and the males no longer get into fights with other toms. I have seen some horrible injuries from fights. I had one little female have 3 litters with a total of 17 kittens in one summer before I finally caught her.
