Post spay care

Hi there! So I recently got 4 female kittens spayed and 2 of them developed abscesses/infections in their spay site on day 7 and day 8 post spay. They were on the cone almost all the time and in a well-sized recovery cage for 7 to 8 days with limited time to roam. We've been taking very good care of them (if I say so myself) but the second kitten has developed an infection now and I am not sure why... we clean and sanitize the place everyday and made sure there weren't any high places for them to jump or play rough..
The local vet is also not the best and I am absolutely distraught with some of the experiences I've had- they're so rude and do nothing to reassure us as pet owners (no other vets in the area close by as I live in such a country). So my question is what could possibly be causing this infection? These 2 kittens are high energy kittens and one of them would always find ways to remove her cone no matter how securely its placed. We have to take the second kitten to the vet tomorrow once again and I am more upset about having to go there and worried about how they'll go about this- they can be really rude and unprofessional sometimes((

Unfortunately, if it is truly abscesses, it could be caused by a lack of sterile procedures during the spay surgery. Or, if the kittens have a compromised immune system. I doubt it is from anything you have done.

I am heartbroken to hear this- it could very well be As I mentioned they are not the best vet around. We've been keeping such a close eye on the kittens and caring for them like newborns that when something like this happens after all this effort it feels so disheartening. And I feel so bad for the babies

I have spayed and neutered many feral cats who were released within one to two days, never to be checked again even if they continued to come for meals, and no one had any issues. You have taken great care with these kittens, so I also have to suspect that the problem lies with the clinic.

Honestly I feel awful. I would have been ok if the problem lied with us; if the room needed more frequent sanitation or we had to change their bedding even more frequently that would have been fine I am here to learn and to rectify my mistakes. But if its the clinic how am I supposed to continue this any longer? My mind's a mess thinking about this. I feel so bad putting my babies through this; they're only 4 and half months old.
Is there a way to know if it is really the clinic or perhaps something in our doing that's causing the abscesses? Many thanks🥹

It is nothing you are doing or haven’t done. The only thing other than the clinic would be if they all suffered from some sort of immune deficiency. Can you post a picture?

Yes sure I'll take a picture once I am back home. They're very healthy kittens. They are not the slightest bit underweight and I was also told that they had a lot of baby fat when we once asked why the surgical incision looked a little red (just the day after surgery which turned out to be normal). But if it is some immune deficiency any ideas on what it could possibly be..? Also to note that my other four kittens recovered from steri normally without any problems🥹
Just the last 2 spays this happened..

I don’t think it is an immune issue. I have seen FIV positive cats recover without incident after a spay. What did the vet say when they had abscesses?

So we took her to the vet this afternoon and they gave her 2 antibiotic injections and put her on a course of antibiotics for a week. We expressed our concern on the matter as well and they said that they're doing the surgeries properly as best as they could. For now I am keeping her warm and just focusing on her recovery.. praying for this baby to get well soon. She's a firecracker and I absolutely love her.
I'll post a picture of her later when I can, sorry I haven't been able to take a picture she's a bit fidgety and I'll need a bit of help.

It isn't you. You are doing a great. When the local cost rescue in our area took Lil Gray for her spay, I begged them not to tip her ear. That is common here, especially with ferals, but I told them we were keeping her. It led to an argument with the rescue person, and my kitten ended up with a tipped ear anyway. She came home with a jagged ear, which promptly got infected. We had to take her to our personal vet and probably ended up paying more than we would have to get her spayed there. I am not against rescues, but apparently this one's vet was not very sterile. I hope your kittens get better soon. Bless you for adopting these babies.

I am sorry this happened to you. Rescue or not I don't support the ear-tipping system; there has to be another way. I am glad your baby's all better and healed up now♡

The infections could be due to inadequate wound healing, complications during surgery, or environmental factors. Continue to monitor the kittens, ensure they don’t remove their cones, and keep their recovery area clean. If possible, seek a second opinion from another vet or an online consultation service.
