I just went for my cat’s review 2 weeks after her spay and the vet discovered there’s a really small bean lump at her wound area. Everything is fine with her, playing eating well. As she also gave birth 5 months ago, vet says her recovery might be slower than normal cats too. The vet actually gave me 2 options, to operate under GA again to remove the small bean or if I want to do an ultrasound to see if the small bean is a major issue if not she still would need an operation too. Due to the costs, I chose to observe her first then make a decision on whether to operate and hopefully after 2 months her small bean may diminish and recover. May I know if this is a high possibility of hernia or not? Any experienced pawrent can advise me to give me a peace of mind? 🙁

Hi. Sorry no one has responded to your post yet. Is the vet sure it is a hernia and not a seroma, a reaction to the sutures, or scar tissue? The two former conditions usually resolve on their own over time. Scar tissue may last a life time.

I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to have the ultrasound done as it may prove to be something that doesn't need treatment now, or even perhaps ever. Find out from them how they can designate between a hernia and other lumps that can occur after a spay.

If it is a hernia, it really all depends on the size and what tissue is involved as to when/if it may need to be surgically corrected. Many hernias do seem to cause discomfort/pain. And, while they can happen, it doesn't seem that they are a common occurrence. I don't know if her giving birth months ago would increase the likelihood.

I haev a small female right now taht has scar tissue under her incision and it feels like a long line of swelling. She has had this for 10 years. MANY cats develop a lump under or around the incision site. It feels like a small movable lump.I In fact I often advise people on this and tell them it's normal swelling that occurs inside from the trauma and dissolvable stitches. I,myself, would wait a couple of months and see if it resolves. if it does, I would question this vets motives about having all this pricey stuff done!
