My moggy suddenly went blind last Friday, and he has to undergo an MRI under anaesthesia next Thursday.
I have been faced with an impossible decision... should I just let him be? What if there's something and if we do nothing it kills him? Should we go ahead with the MRI? What if something happens to him while he's under anaesthesia? I'd feel completely devastated, shattered, and guilty. I would feel I sent him to his death.
Please send up some prayers for us... that all will be well, that he'll get through the anaesthesia well, and that it's just inflammation.
My heart is breaking.

I don't think his doc would recommend a general anesthesia if he/she thought moggy couldn't' handle it.
:yeah:

This is not an "impossible decision." You do what is best for your cat - you find out what's wrong so that you have the information you need to make any decisions. That means getting the MRI and then deciding what to do.

I'll PM you.

We had a consult with the neurologist the day before the MRI. He said that if it was cancer or a brain tumour in the area affected (I think it was the optic chiasm), they would not be able to operate or do much accept offer palliative care (Singapore has no radiotherapy for pets). Based on that, we decided not to go ahead with the MRI given the outcome if we did find something. He is treating my moggy's condition as optic neuritis. He gave him prednisolone for 3 weeks and also an antibiotic. He got him tested for toxoplamosis, cryptococcosis and FCoV. I asked him if it was likely cancer/a tumour if the tests came out negative and he said no, it could be something else causing optic neuritis that the tests don't show.

Did they also check his blood pressure? I know it causes blindness as well, and it's not uncommon. I think @white shadow knows more about it
Yes, blood pressure was one of the first things they checked. Unfortunately in this case, it was normal.

I am sorry moggy has suddenly gone blind, i pray to god that little moggy gets healthier soon. I hope that the MRI scan will give you some answers and help moggy to get better. I pray all the angels in heaven looks after moggy and guides you to make the right decision and to help you be strong for moggy. God bless you and moggy.

I also agree that there are many cats who do well with blindness. They are very adaptive to their environtment . Watch this video on youtube : its from Vet Ranch the poor cat lost both of his eyes, if you watch the end of the video you wouldnt know that he is blind.

I don't think I want to watch this, I'm too a soft spot on certain matters.

But I agree with the fact that cats deal with blindness pretty well.
My Lola went blind overnight, I realized of it in the morning, her pupils were dilated, her eyes were deep black. The blindness was due to a spike in her BP. Both her retinas got detached, but despite all odds, they got reattached. Impossible to believe even for the ophtalmologist.
For reasons that no doctor or specialist were able to explain, Lola got blind and back to a rather good sight every other week for a year, till her death.

Anyway she got used to her new conditions and as long as in the house things weren't being moved continuously, she had mapped the whole home and could move without too many troubles.

We also has a cat that lost his vision but not overnight.
He did fantastic and was still a happy cat for many years.
He did not move around the house as much as his did before ,he would find his
comfey spots and stay put for longer.
He would still play though. He loved those crinkly little balls as they were noisy and his hearing was amazing.
I was always so impressed with how he adapted .
Prayers.

So, it's 2:20 am Thursday over here... in 1 day it'll be 3 weeks since my moggy went blind suddenly. He has adapted very well to his blindness. He's eating well, drinking well, peeing well and pooping well. He's active and shows no other neurological problems (touch wood). Right now he's on prednisolone and clindamycin, and we are waiting for the test results to come back (although me being pessimistic, I doubt they'll find anything).

Sending special thoughts and good vibes your way that the test results will give you more information to help treat your sweet moggy. :vibes::vibes::vibes:

Do i remember correctly that you asked about toxoplasmosis? I know a cat that lost his sight, and the toxoplasmosis test was somewhat inconclusive, but they decided to treat it anyway with antibiotics and it worked. Can this be the case with your cat?

Hi! Yes, I asked about toxoplasmosis. That's one of the things he's being tested for (the other two are cryptoccocus and FCoV). I'm pessimistic that the test results will show anything, but hopefully it's one of those things (not FCoV though, since that would mean he has FIP). I found out that the antibiotic they're giving him (Clindamycin) is what they give to cats with toxoplasmosis, so hopefully, if that's what it is, it works. Thanks! Your story is very encouraging to hear.
