Hi, I have a cat about 16 years old. I have noticed his left paw at the wrist is a little bent. I took him to the vet to show him but he would not perform the act for him like he does at home, He does eat alot and drinks alot of water but maintaining his weight o.k so I decided to have the vet do a blood test for diabetes and thyroid check to see how his numbers are. After a few days the vet called and said no diabetes and that the thyroid t-4 was a little off and almost in the gray area and would like to check him again in a few months, he also said his kidneys were good. I am a little worried on this paw thing and the only info. online i can find is carpal hyper extension, i guess an x ray would be a good step but i am not quite sure it is an injury as there is no swelling nor real limping. Does anyone have any clue as to what it might be? any info. would help...Thanks so much.

Hello R Ron454 and mancatto, and welcome to TCS! Though I do not have any idea as to what this might be, his checkup is good so far, which should be reassuring. I am posting to wish you and your cat all the best and to hope that others with constructive information may post soon. Please do consider an Xray if his wrist continues showing this sign as it may be helpful; and please keep us informed as to how he is doing!

I have a very old GSD (15) who has something very similar to, if not exactly, carpal hyperextension. His story is not going to help you, and we are treating it only with pain medication as he is not a candidate for anything else at this point and probably does not have a lot of time left. The only difference I can add to what you wrote is that it is not something that he had to do in the vet's office in order for the vet to see it. There is a noticeable bend at the wrist which is permanent. However, I am certainly not saying that your cat might not have this or questioning your description. Personally, I would ask for an xray. The article I am going to attach will qualify what an xray might show in this case and what might be deduced from it. (You may have already read it.) The xray is a starting point for trying to figure out what is going on. Even if the vet did not see anything in the office, you certainly have the right to ask for this to be diagnosed.

Follow up on the thyroid as you were asked. Even if he were to need medication, this is very common, not expensive, and not a big deal.

Hi, i thank you all for the info. i do love this cat and would try to do all i can for him, it does say surgery can be performed but i am wondering also, is it real expensive? i am sure it is and with him being 16 years old would he even make it thru that much trama?

Take this one step at a time and make a decision from there if it is CH. There could be several options, depending on what is going on, and surgery would be the last of them. Consulting a veterinary orthopedist or neurologist (once you know what this is) is also an option as they will be able to get right to the crux of the matter. I have sometimes found that seeing a specialist one time is worth a number of appointments with various general vets.

My loves are 17, born feral and scooped up on our land as a tiny kitten, and 14, rehomed to me by a guy who loves him but was marrying an allergic. *I would have chosen my cat. But anyway. I send his dad pix and he loves seeing how well he is doing! He joined the family here at age 9.*
