Hi. I’ve recently joined TCS. I am planning to get a cat. She is 15 months old. The breeder says it’s A Maine Coon but I’m not sure. Please help me out guys. And will it be a wise decision to get a cat this old?

Nay, not no typical Maine coon. My guess the cat has some persian ancestry.

Observe one ear has its tip cut off. Its commonly done either with TNR-cats, or cats spayed in cheap clinics working with homeless and TNR...

The cat may anyways be very good cat to have as friend and home cat etc,
but if you had fancied to have a purebred MCO and are charged payment for a MCO - this is not the way to go.

Thanks mate. He has another one, white in Color, bicolour eyes. Can you tell me if this is a proper Maine Coon or not?

I agree. The first cat is surely a recent descendant of a brachycephalic Persian, not a Maine Coon, because he has a very flat Persian-like face. The white cat is also doesn't look like a Maine Coon, because he has a prominent muzzle pinch, and also the ears look too far apart for a Maine Coon.

I'm concerned about the merits of this breeder. Firstly because the cats don't look to be Maine Coons, and also the pictures of the white cat look like they're taken in a very dirty environment.

-personally we like to adopt older cats. The personality is more established.....what you see is what you get. Older cats are harder to find homes for.....everyone wants a kitten.

Our 2 cats were both about a year and a half old when we adopted them...........and they have been amazing.

The other one is no typical mco either. Him too has prob some persian ancestry. He is also a point ("siamese-mix"), not just white. Nothing wrong with points, some of my best friends are points. but mco arent known to be points.

RUN from this "breeder".

to your second question: Adult cats are OK to buy, they DO attach to a new owner, as long you are friendly and caretaking.

Of course, if they come from a bad breeder and are unsocialized, you must be prepare to do some resocializing.
But on the other hand, chance is big they will recognize you are helping them out, and are grateful to you...

All in all. If you see an adult cat, and it seems suitable for you, there is no need to hesitate.
Its a little of a "stable" tip, as they say about a cheap but surprising good buy.

Thanks for answering mate. What breed it could possibly be? Persian?

Another shocking thing was that he’s giving it at ₹10,000 that’s around 150 USD. Man someone has to put a barrier on such activities

This is actually far cheaper than the pedigree price, which would be upwards of $800 USD, for a pet. So, if you're in love with one of the cats, I think it's okay to get them. You might additionally be rescuing them out of a bad situation (see the dirt that the white cat is sitting in).

I see. I suppose longhaired cats are pretty rare in India. So in lack of a real breeder, you must got o a BYB breeder if you want a longhaired cat...

In our coldly northern west, we do always have the alternative of spontan adopting a homeless cat. Or contact some shelter and pick up one from them.

You can do this too, but it will be almost only shorthairs...

A asna The first is fairly easy: she has apparently a fresh modern flat face persian ancestry. For all practical reasons you can call her for a persian mix or even a persian.

The second one is more difficult. May have some persian ancestry too, but further back. Perhaps a dau to the first, father a non persian - perhaps a MCO?? Or a doll faced persian? Call her for a doll face persian mix if you so want.

Both seems to be classical (bulls eye) tabbies. Very nice patterned.

Both sweet in their respective fashion. :)

Is there a rescue you could adopt from? I would trust that much more than one of these breeders.
