Pyrethrins, and the related permethrins, are toxins that attack the nervous systems of insects and are a widely-used insecticide in flea and tick prevention products used on dogs and cats. Unfortunately, pyrethrins can cause severe and significant toxicity in pets, especially cats.May 31, 2014

There are much safer products to use.  Please read the article at the link above and ALWAYS READ LABELS and understand the ingredients before putting anything on your pet.

Someone recently used Gold Medal Pets Ear Mite & Tick Control with disastrous results.  See thread http://www.thecatsite.com/t/333923/gold-medal-pets-ear-mite-tick-control#post_4202256 and another thread about the same product posted in the Health forum. 

Ear mites can be safely treated with diotomaceous earth (feed quality).

I may add that some household insecticdes used against kitchen cockroaches contains pirethrines.
