I'm looking at getting a Maine Coon from a breeder in the near future. I've had Maine Coons from breeders in the past so I know all the rules of thumb and questions to ask. The breeder I bought from in the past no longer shows or breeds. She just got to old and had to stop.
I've visited a couple cattery's in the area but I haven't found what I'm looking for. When I got my last Maine Coon all the breeders cats kinda looked the same except for colors they bred for. It seems now there are 2 different looks breeders are going after. CFA which is a softer look and TICA which is a more feral look. When I got my last cat the CFA look was what I remember seeing and was what my last coon looked like. I'm not crazy about the TICA bred cats look. I'm more partial to the CFA look.
I found a breeder in my area that has some beautiful cats on her site and she specializes in silvers. They kinda have a cross between the CFA and TICA look. I also love and am looking for silver...mackerel preferred.
She has very little info on her site and it just says call her, which I did. She said at the beginning of the call that she had just gotten out of the hospital 4 days earlier and if I could call her back in about a week. I told her I just wanted to get info on her cats and told how beautiful they were. Well she proceeds to talk with me and thanks me for complimenting her cats. We didn't talk long. I was pressed for time and I didn't want to keep her long but, in the conversation I asked if she done any shows with her cats. She said no. That she was a germaphobe and didn't want her cats around a bunch of other cats being brushed with the same brush and handled getting ring worm and god knows what.
Now, I know that would sound like a red flag and I should probably run from this breeder but, here's the thing! Her price is $1500 and she said her breeders are top of the line. There are more questions I wanted to ask but like I said I was pressed for time and I'm not in a rush. I have a Maine Coon mix from a rescue that I'm working with and I don't want to rush into anything till I feel he's ready for it. I plan on calling her back again.
Which brings me to my question. She has a face book page and when you go to it there is nothing but praise for her cats and people posting pics of cats they got from her and thanking her for getting them a cat so on and so forth. That kind of sells me on her. The cats are awesome and I know a Maine Coon when I see one. They are Maine Coons!
So, is there something I'm over looking that I should be thinking about? I don't care about papers or them being registered as long as they aren't inbred or not thoroughbreds. I'm just curious on other peoples thoughts on this. The web site for the breeder is highsilvermainecoons.com Check it out and give me some feed back. I don't see how face book could be rigged or faked.
