The inspection was conducted as part of an FDA investigation into a multi-state foodborne outbreak of Clostridium botulinum toxicosis implicated in approximately 52 equine deaths and additional illnesses.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is cautioning horse owners not to feed Top of the Rockies alfalfa cubes with the date codes 111222, 111322, 111422, 111522, and 111622 after numerous cases of illness and death of horses in Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Texas.

On Dec. 17, 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cautioned horse owners not to feed Top of the Rockies alfalfa cubes with the certain date codes. These alfalfa cubes were recalled by Manzanola Feeds, which distributes products directly to farms, feed stores and co-ops in eight states.


"According to the FDA, the Top of the Rockies Alfalfa Cubes were distributed to feed stores and co-ops in 8 states: AR, CO, IL, LA, NM, OK, TX, and WI1. However, CBS4Indy reports that the recalled alfalfa cubes were distributed to feed stores and co-ops in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, Texas and Wisconsin2. The FDA has confirmed that the firm distributes products to feed stores and co-ops in 10 states: Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin3.

Johnsonville LLC of Sheboygan Falls, WI, is recalling 42,062 pounds of ready-to-eat “Beddar with Cheddar” pork sausage links that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically very thin strands of black plastic fibers. The pork sausage links were produced on Jan. 26, 2023, and have a best-by date of July 11.

ReConserve Inc. Fails FDA inspection

According to its website, the company recycles bakery, cereal grain, snack foods, and related food by-products into ground meal that can be incorporated into feed for poultry, swine, dairy cattle, and beef cattle.

Why this matters ReConserve describes its finished product as a “high-energy, nutrient dense, highly palatable” substitute for “more expensive feed grains and fat,” which can be incorporated into animal food rations at levels as high as 25% for poultry and 30% for swine.
