Persian's and their teeth

I have a 3 year old Persian I adopted back in the fall. Before I adopted him I knew diddley about the breed(along with every other cat breed) but when I knew I was going to be adopting him I read up a bit on the breed.
In the past during his grooming sessons I have noticed one of his canines is brown and his gums are inflamed. He is going to be going into the doctor to have this checked out but is dental problems common with this breed? I know about their bites and how awfull they can be but he's got a pretty good bite for a Persian. I just haven't found any information about the strength of their teeth themselves.
I'm hoping that someone here knows enough about the breed and can help.
