While I live in NJ now, I used to live in NYC and have worked there for decades. You may want to start with some of these well known and "famous" places:

Koneko Cafe (all cats on premises are adoptable)

Bianca's Furry Friends (part of North Shore Animal League Beth Stern fame)
Anjellicle Cats Rescue

I know of more but their names aren't coming right to mind.
