Omen's Weird Toenail

Omen's one nail looks as if it broke off at one point before I adopted him. Now he's got a double-pointed tip on his innermost right toe. I've trimmed it shorter than in the picture below. Do I wait for it to grow out and gradually trim it until it's one complete nail (I'm thinking over several weeks), or should I be concerned?

Wow, I have never seen anything like that before. Sybil had polydactyl front paws… but none of her nails ever split like that. It was hard to clip the inner claw, but it had to be done or it would become ingrown. I would ask your DVM about that. It’s probably nothing serious. I would imagine.

I just looked this up and it says it could be something called onycholysis. Onycholysis seems to be separation from the nail bed due to fungus, other infections- viral or bacterial, allergies, psoriasis, injury, nail biting, clipping with a blunt clipper, or even cancer etc.

Thank you! I'll make an appointment with my vet then so she can take a look at it. He's a very active kitten, so I'm wondering if his weird nail is caused by him injuring himself. Otherwise, he acts like a typical active cat.

I agree that's very weird. I've had cats break their nail, but never like that. I'm glad you're contacting the vet.
