Our one-year-old cat has been sick for the past few weeks. The cat has been losing hair and has some bald patches, he itches quite regularly, he lost a bit of weight, and has diarrhea. Our cat goes outside as we have a garden and apart from the symptoms he has been in good spirits. We took the cat to the vet two weeks ago and the vet gave anti-worm and flea stuff. However, things haven't improved and the cat still has all the symptoms. What can it be? What should we do? We love him so so much

Did the vet run any bloodwork, or other examinations while you were there? I would recommend taking your cat back for a follow-up, since you’re not seeing improvement with the dewormer and the flea/tick medication, that indicates that there might be something else going on.

The vet just quickly said when seeing him that it is probably a flea and worm infection. How quickly does the medication help or how quickly should we see improvements? Any ideas on what other things this could be?

Keep him inside and see if you notice a difference. It shouldn't take long to work

From what I’ve found online, it appears that dewormers can take 2-3 weeks to get rid of all the parasites; so it could still be that it is worms that are causing the issue. It could also be that he needs another round of treatment.

I would still recommend checking in with your vet. Be sure to ask your vet if they want a stool sample (and if so, be sure it’s fresh!). You can also ask if they think there are any other tests worth doing.

The article linked above is from a pet supply store, but it has some helpful info about dewormers and how long they take to work.
