Spike had a dental thursday around 1 pm, and he is still not out of the anesthesia. HIs bloodwork was good before the work, I took him back yesterday FRI, and all his vitals were good. Here is is 6 am on sat., and he is still falling over, and glarry eyed. they gave him propanthol and gas, and an antibiotic. said to call her today she opens at noon. I AM IN PANIC MODE. has anyone had this happen, and have the cat be ok?? Need some vibes, I am so worried and upset. He is strong enought to fight me trying to syringe some food in him, can't get any in. most of it on him. I am panicking,

I think what's happening here is not that Spike is not coming out of anesthesia but that the combination of ear cleaning, anesthesia and dental has caused a middle or inner ear problem that in turn is causing loss of balance and other problems.

Please, I urge you to do the following:
Call the ER at your vet school for advice.
Also, take Spike to a specialist.

My understanding is that with this kind of problem he should be seen by a neurologist but the ER might have different advice regarding a specialist. You'll need to find out.

Here is the info you need:

(In my state the people at the vet school ER are terrific, one can count on great, caring advice regarding what to do when one feels totally helpless in a situation.)

I agree, it sounds like a vertigo issue going on, because the anesthesia should be well out of his system. Being a Saturday, I would call right away! these types of things always happen to me on a Saturday night and into a Sunday when all my vets are closed
. For Spike and you too

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
This really does sound more like an ear canal problem than an anesthesia problem at this point. I read in your other thread they cleaned his ears during the procedure, and it seems very much like that's the seat of the problem at this point (especially if he's strong enough to fight you trying to feed him!)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am freaking ouir. I took a perfectly healthy beautiful cat to get his teeth cleaned.!!! I am so upset bawling!!!

This sounds a lot like what Goma had when a bad groomer was too rough cleaning his ear canal - landed him in the ER, took I think 2 weeks of meds, but he got 100% better. Here is where it all started: http://mycatgoma.com/search?updated-...&max-results=3

There are lots of posts with updates from there (scroll all the way to the bottom and click "Newer Posts", then start from bottom up), and of course you can always contact Sacha (Goma's mom) to ask about it

Yes I told them about the ear the first time I went in with him, and they didn't seem real concerned, but second time they concurred that they think it is an inner ear infection. His blood work was good second time, THEY CLEANED HIS EAR AGAIN!, cause it was dirty again (ear infections get dirty fast?). He was taking long coming out of the anesthesia too, so it was a combination. The good news is, he ate a little when we came home, and again this morning. His walking is still wobbly, not sure when that will stop, hopefully when the ear infection resolves. I can't read all the Goma info, I can see reponses, but no more details from her, but the initial description sounds just like this case. I am really pissed that they did clean his ears, and clipped his nails without telling me, or asking me. I know they think they are doing you a favor. I am mad at that , but on the other hand, they really helped with the fluids and feeding. I think they were really concerned, or maybe guilty feeling? But had they just thrown me aside, he could have gotten much worse.
I will sigh a breathe of relief when I see him walk and run the way he used to.
thanks all for the support, and let this be a lesson, do NOT allow the vet or anyone to clean your cats ears. A simple swab on the inside is fine, we don't need to put in solution and get to the eardrum!!!! My 140 dental turned into 300, and that was with freebies and discounts. But if he gets back to 100% that will be a bargain.
