Literally a couple of hours after I posted that yesterday, my cats sat together and started grooming each other! Yay! The friendly one was in the coveted spot (a folded up blanket on the couch) and the shy one spent about 5 minutes going back and forth deciding if she was actually going to sit right next to her so that she could be on that spot too. She finally did it, and then the friendly one started grooming her. What's wild is that this is the EXACT timeline from last time- 2 days shy of 3 weeks. It was that exact day last time that I came back from a lunch out and found them sitting on the couch grooming each other.

Last time I kept feeding them separately for quite awhile, just out of an abundance of caution, but I'm going out of town for Thanksgiving, so I didn't have the luxury of more time this time. I needed to make sure they were adjusted to being fed together before the pet sitter comes. I fed them dinner together this evening and they were just fine. Phew!

So sorry you have another vet appointment coming up. Personally, next time I'm going to try a 24 hour initial separation and see if that makes any difference.
Yay!!! Glad they are friends again!

Good news is Alvin seems like he’s doing better with his diabetes so I am hoping his blood work shows some signs of remission. I am going to try to take them both this time and hopefully that helps!

Good luck! Please report back if taking them together helps. I really looked for success stories in preventing this prior to this most recent vet appointment, and really couldn't find any (I know there are tips out there, but I couldn't find personal stories of those who'd experienced it once and then successfully prevented it later). I'd love to hear about a strategy that actually works for cats who do this regularly!

I just got back from the vet. I took them both to see if it would help. Let me say it was a lot to wrangle two cats by yourself. There was a lot of meowing lol. I have them separated currently too. I wiped down Alvin with a shirt I rubbed him with before I left and had it in a ziplock bag. Once he bathes himself I might try to let them see each other. I’m thinking about waiting until dinner time though. I will post my findings later!

I should clarify that they saw each other on the way home and at the vet and there was no issues there. They haven’t seen each other since we got home.

Update! I think taking them together did the trick!!! It’s almost 830 pm and I let them out together around 3 and Simon just walked passed Alvin and didn’t even sniff AT ALL. He must smell the same. So it’s been about 5 hours with no signs of aggression or stress. I am thinking about leaving them out together tonight. Even though most of the time they are with me in my room anyway!

I really hope this worked. It almost seems too good to be true lol

Is everything still all good? That's awesome if it totally worked! Did you put them in separate carriers and just have the one who wasn't being treated sitting in his carrier in the exam room? I wondered about there still being "new smells" if only one cat was handled by the vet/techs, got blood work done, etc.

Still all good. Absolutely no aggression. I actually caught them playing on the floor last night and licking each other. I had them in separate carriers but on the ride home they could see each other the entire time. So maybe that helped. Someone mentioned that here previously that car rides helps them bound. I did keep them separated until Alvin bathed himself to get the iodine smell off of him from the blood work and then I wiped him down with the shirt I took with his scent on it. I’m so thankful this worked cause we have to go to the vet a lot now!!
