I've been reading tons of other threads and posts these past weeks too, getting caught up in how the kitty relationships are developing. It is really lovely and, yes, rather addictive!
haha...Yes. Good to know that other members also have these positive 'cat-intro thread' addictions, too. :read:
(Well, they are way better than watching the junk on tv. lately. o_O)
Typing this sitting on my bed. Elliot is asleep next to me, and Audrey is asleep in her bed on the floor. So it is possible for them both to nap in the same room now :) I'm starting to feel like we will be able to let Elliot come and go out of the bedroom during the day, even if Audrey is asleep in here.

She also seems to be coming down on to the floor more often
when they are both downstairs. It's very hard to tell if she's playing or not. Audrey was not very well socialised as a young cat: she is quite peculiar, always hides when we have company, and is very slow to play with toys, as I think I have mentioned. With all the growling and hissing it seems like she doesn't enjoy Elliot's company; but at the same time, she is choosing to watch him more, and choosing not to jump up on windowsills or tables out of his way quite so often, even though she knows this works.
Excellent.
Way to go Audrey!
She might also just be more of a shy cat. (My Tripp was very well socialized...but if any company comes over...he will go and hide, too. Or else listen from a far distance. Tepaul, the female, is the total opposite. She will come by, and likes to 'chat', meow, with anyone, and sits close by.)

Perhaps her growling and hissing, is just her way of communicating that Elliot should 'slow down'...and not move so fast.
She still needs to 'train Elliot' about what she's comfortable with.

(If you do have some extra time, then there is another older thread that might be helpful to skim over and read.
It is quite long, ...so probably best to just skim over the parts from the OP.
It's called: Introducing Cats - Logistics Questions. by Twylasmom Twylasmom .) :bluepaw:

(Even though the cats are totally different ages...one being a senior...and the other was a kitten that she found outdoors and managed to bring in. (Hooper the kitten was I think a bit older than your Elliot, but I'm not sure. Twyla was about 11 yrs at the time). The thread has some really good videos, too, ...where you can actually hear Twyla hissing and growling at Hooper.
The photos are also very descriptive. It was tough, and long going, ...but skip to the end...and it's amazing how bonded and together the two are. Really worth the read, over the weekend,....just for the facts on how hard it was...but how patience, routines, playing, ...all helped in getting them introduced.) :greenpaw:
He follows her everywhere when she is on the floor. He is like her little shadow. Or he will run away and then run back up to her, clearly desperate for her to chase him. Occasionally she does lunge towards him for a few steps, hissing of course...
That sounds sweet, about Elliot being Audrey's...little shadow.:blackcat: :tabbycat:
I guess to her, ...it's not. :nono::bliss:

Maybe the 'lunging' ...is Audrey's attempts at Playing...albeit... kind of scary if you're a smaller kitten...who gets hissed at a lot.
But then again, if Audrey's swatting and swiping at Elliot is also decreasing...then slowly progress is being made.
Have a great night, Moggielady and fur crew.

Actually the one most keeping to self is Gracie, the third one to come. She just prefers to sleep a lot of the day. First she camped out in a cat tower, now has decided my bed is the best place. She doesn’t mind the others at all. Ziggy is out in the house quite a bit now. But she loves her room and does spend time in there.
Yeah that’s true people in intros are sure glad it’s done! With my 4 it has always been a relief “yay they can be together!!” Haha.
I love how our cats change where they like to sleep, constantly. :catrub:
We can actually never know, where they will end up next.
It's like they get tired of one spot, and need some new place to relax and feel safe in. I think it might have to do with how they leave their scent everywhere, too. :bluepaw:

(my apologies to Ziggy...for thinking "she" was a boy cat. I actually thought you had two girls and two boys. :paperbag:
Must be fun and interesting having four cats. All those personalities to mingle with. :)
I honestly don't know how you managed to introduce them all. You must have the patience of a saint. :clover:)

It is addictive! It's like I know them personally after a time.

This is my Waffles and Ziggy. And it has progressed to better relationship over time. So no losing hope!! It is good signs. "Little shadow" is so cute. And now Waffles (6 years old) and Ziggy (14 years old) have been sitting under the table 2 feet apart having discussions and just looking around, glancing at each other, then looking around again...and other times I believe Ziggy may be trying to play and the others not ready, so I am having some of the same things, trying to figure it out. But Waffles still growls and hisses at times. But enough about me!

Oh my Twyla and Hooper was one I was hooked on. Then the ending is wonderful.

(my apologies to Ziggy...for thinking "she" was a boy cat. I actually thought you had two girls and two boys. :paperbag:

Oh it is a boy name. But her previous owner took her over from a friend of his who kept leaving Ziggy with him and kind of wasn't too interested in getting Ziggy back so the previous owner before me finally just kept her name, and I did too.
Yes fun and interesting with 4 cats. I'll never have 4 again......but it just happened. And one reason for being addicted to intro threads was to learn what the heck to do to get this done haaaahaaaa. I've learned sooooo much. And it is fun, they are all so different and special and lovely.

You are right, that was quite rude of me. Poor Audrey. She is very gentle, but yes, shy of new people, and startles easily. Elliot is just more outgoing. But then... he is a kitten. This may change!

Thank you so much for this suggestion! I have skimmed (ahem... mostly read) the whole thread, and goodness, what a journey that was - so well documented, and it's such a sweet ending. It really does give me hope, especially with Twyla being older than Audrey is.

And I loved the bit about Twyla and Hooper having movie nights together, so I tried putting a bird video up on the TV in the living room, and the two of them did watch it together for a while! I'd say we had about 15 minutes of peace, during which Elliot kept jumping up and down off the TV stand trying to catch the birds, and Audrey sat off to the side and seemed to be watching him as much as she was watching the screen. He did turn and mock-pounce at Audrey a couple times, but she saw him off with a hiss and a swat, then resumed watching.

They had about 90 mins together this morning, and another 90 mins or so in the late afternoon/early evening, including movie time. Audrey was fast asleep most of the hours in between. Two treat-eating sessions. They both hush and behave when the treats are getting doled out now! And she will let Elliot stay a bit longer on the windowsill after the treats have stopped, too, so long as he doesn't move a lot.

But then again, if Audrey's swatting and swiping at Elliot is also decreasing...then slowly progress is being made.
I really think it is decreasing, yes. So glad about that! And she jumped up on my lap again today when he was roaming the room. Didn't stay long, just a minute or so, because when he spotted her up there he had to come over and interfere... But she is becoming more relaxed, both when he is around, and when he is in his room and it's just us: she played with me last night for a while, and has been coming for her usual snuggles at bedtime, and even came and sat with me in my armchair when I was working for a while today, which she hasn't done for weeks.

I live in hope!

Have a lovely weekend, cat nap, you and Tripp and Tepaul.

It's really heartening to hear that you're having a similar experience, pearl! Ziggy and Waffles' discussions under the table sounds so cute. Yes, it's tricky figuring out what might be a grumbly older cat attempting to play, and what is her saying genuinely, 'Leave me alone you little brat.' Everything is a growl and it all sounds very similar to me, though I suppose there are fine nuances that I'm missing (but if you ask me Elliot is missing them too, because whatever she says, he still manages to provoke more hissing from her...) And wow, you are doing this with FOUR cats. I am run ragged with just two!

Well they came at different times over 3 years and a few months. But Gracie and Ziggy came within 4 months of each other. So I feel 2-3 cats in the future will be the max for me. 😁

Not too much to report on the introduction front. I have caught them a couple of times watching the birds together: not side by side, but within a couple feet. It only lasts a couple minutes before the growling starts again, though! I haven't been extending their time together because Elliot has picked up an infection, which is what was causing the dry patches on his skin (the vet thinks), and also he's a bit sneezy and has got a sticky eye. He is taking antibiotics and they are giving him diarrhoea, poor little guy. The vet also wants us to use a medicated shampoo on his dry spots. So... I have spent a lot of time today cleaning poop off him and then chasing him around the bathroom with the shampoo... Basically have just been focusing on keeping him warm and clean and making sure he gets lots of sleep and not so much on pressing him to hang out with Audrey. (Not that he would object to hanging out with Audrey. She would object. He is too much for her even when he is looking all handsome. I don't think she is at all impressed with him in his current wild bedraggled sticky-eyed poopy monster phase.) I am going to ask the vet tomorrow about a probiotic and whether there is anything else he would recommend to help with the diarrhoea.

Ahh, poor little Elliot. Hopefully, he gets over this infection quickly. :frown:
First having to go to the Vets for neutering,...and now having to be on antibiotics for his skin...that causes diarrhea. 😾
Then sneezy and a sticky eye. 🤧

Could Elliot also be coming into contact with some dust, and or spider-webs ...when he goes exploring underneath beds and dressers and such.
(My cats would sometimes do this ...and then I'd see them with their faces with grey dust...or cobwebs...and know that I'd have to look for the places they go to...and use the swiffer broom. It's hard...since there seems to be so many spaces...where cats get to...but we humans forget about.)

People on here, have mentioned that Lysine helps, if it's an URI,...(but reading another thread said it hasn't been proven...and some study said it does not do anything. It's so confusing. :read: :confused2:)
I think I would try it though, but I'd ask the Vet, first,...and see what they say.

Others have said that taking their cat into a steamy bathroom...to loosen up their sinuses...helps, also.

Nope, I don't think Audrey would be too impressed with little Elliot in that ..."current wild bedraggled sticky-eyed poopy monster phase" ...either. :eek2: :barfgreen:
It doesn't paint a handsome, gentlemanly like picture.:tabbycat: Poor guy. 😾

I hope the medicated shampoo does not actually smell like 'medicated' and awful.
Then Audrey will for sure...want Elliot ...to abide by a '10 foot rule'...as in, ..."you smell like medicine...stay 10 feet away from me, thanks. Anything closer and I'm going to swat you."

Strange that the Vets have not come up with any type of 'spray on medication' versus shampoo...for cats...(since my dog was given a spray for some skin infections, too.)
Because I'm sure that Vets know how... our 'cats just love to take baths'.(sarcastically spoken)....and how we humans like to keep all our arms and hands intact. (more sarcasm).

I hope you are faring well...with giving Elliot his baths...and not needing some more 'octopus arms' to do it. (because you know, those octopus arms are needed for taking photos, videos and playing with the cats.)
"Chasing around the bathroom"...doesn't sound like my idea of fun. :bluepaw:

I wonder if adding... a bit of a bland diet of rice and white chicken breast,...to his usual meal would help with the diarrhea.

Ask your Vet about
  1. ...adding some pure Pumpkin, too,...since I'm not sure if the extra fiber would cause more diarrhea or less.
(one of the threads I've read here, if you do a 'search' mentioned that pure pumpkin ...is both used in constipation and diarrhea...so not sure...how you can tell the difference.)
2. if Lysine would help with his runny eye
3. if something like S. Boulardii...would also be okay...or like you mentioned ...there might be others which are better for antibiotic associated diarrhea.
(my Vet had given me Forti-flora...but it was as an appetite enticer....and the threads on here, said it wasn't as good when used as a probiotic.) (It's also hard to make decisions when one Vet at a clinic says one thing...while another at the same clinic says something else. Who to believe, idk.)

Hope your Elliot kicks this infection fast.....and gets back to his usual playful self.

Thanks cat nap! He has been very boisterous today and his eye is looking tons better - almost back to normal. I did add a little bit of soft mashed squash into his food over the last couple days (like half a teaspoon twice a day), and his tummy has been a little better, though no idea if that's because of the squash or just him acclimating to the antibiotics. In any case, it's a lot more pleasant for him. The vet said we can get a probiotic from them if he doesn't improve. So my octopus arms have had a *bit* of a rest...

The development today with Audrey is that Elliot was stalking her around the dining room, and she was doing her usual growls and hisses, slow-walking away from him and then making herself into a loaf on the carpet and watching him for a while until he approached her again...Only at one point, when he had just tried to pounce on her and then run away, she swatted at him, and then she lay down on her side. I was amazed! I have never seen her lie down like that in his presence . She doesn't often lie on the floor full stop. This was a posture she sometimes adopts when I am playing with a toy with her: she flops on her side and her tail swishes, and she waits to grab the toy and bunny kick it. There was a kicker of Elliot's lying nearby and she sniffed at it, so maybe that encouraged her. Anyway, it was a little moment, and it didn't last long, but it totally cheered me up. It really looked playful to me.

That sounds great Moggielady...both that Elliot's eye is almost back to normal, and that his poop situation is better, too.
Oh, and yes, that your "octopus arms had a 'bit' of a rest", too.
Very important that those arms get... equal parts exercise and rest.

Oh, oh...as soon as I read that "Elliot was stalking her"...I automatically thought..."oh, boy...this might not turn out so good." :paranoid:
But wow, what a great outcome. :)
Hurray for Audrey laying down on her side like that.

She's getting more and more relaxed around Elliot. :cloud9:

(Is it because of Audrey feeling sorry for Elliot's 'sticky-eyed poopy monster phase'...or because he's smelling a lot better.
Maybe she feels a bit of sympathy for him, getting all those baths from his humans... whatever the reason...it sounds good.)
Actually, I think your reasoning... of it being encouraged by that kicker toy of Elliot's...sounds the most plausible.

Sounds like Audrey is finally Accepting...that this 'little intruder'...is not so bad...some of the time. :jive:
Her laying down like that,...and not automatically running away,... must mean that she's feeling Confident, more Accepting and Secure..with him around. :bluepaw::greenpaw:

Yay! Fantastic.
Way to go Audrey! :cheerleader:
She deserves plenty of cat treats for that... 'laying down on the side' action.

Hopefully, each day, ...you'll find... more and more interactions... like this one.
Even if you notice that she still swats him at times, ...it might be done more in Play...than in actually trying to 'bat him away'
Sometimes, it's very hard to tell...so we kind of go with how hard, how fast, and what the reaction is, of both cats,...afterwards.

Hello! Nearly a week has gone by. I think my updates are going to be more like weekly from now on, unless anything dramatic happens...

Elliot is still sneezy/sticky/etc. - it doesn't affect his desire to race around and play, but he's still on his antibiotics, eye drops now too. The vet think he may have been exposed to cat flu before he was immunised, in which case he might get sneezes and eye infections off and on indefinitely :( We are waiting also to find out if the skin thing might be ringworm after all. I am dreading this.

Audrey has not laid down on her side again. But she has done a couple of other good things, both yesterday. First she jumped on the table to get away from him, and he watched her for a while then came and sat on my lap. He was getting sleepy. So he stretched out and started snoozing, and after a few minutes Audrey put her head down on the table and had a little nap too! First time she has gone to sleep in his presence. (I have seen him disturb her when she is already sleeping, and her go back to sleep while he's still in the room, but this is much more of a dramatic relaxation, from high vigilance to napping.)

Of course she didn't sleep long. Something startled them both, the heads went up, the ears went up, and she jumped down again. But a while later he was dozing under the table and she came and jumped in my lap and had some scratches, and she purred: a little wobbly rusty purr, not the usual sounds she makes when he's elsewhere, but again: first time she has purred for me when he is in the room.

There's also been some loud growly chasing around a cardboard box we've left out, which Elliot loves jumping inside of. Audrey on a few occasions has chosen to sit in the cardboard box while Elliot runs at her, and she acts all outraged and swipes and hisses at him. But I'm like, lady, you don't have to sit in the box, you chose to!

Here is a pic of them watching birds-- I won't say together, but near to one another:

Ah, Elliot...hoping his immune system just develops, over time, to be able to knock out any viral or bacterial infections, that it might come across, both now and in the future. Hoping, too, that only good results come back for any skin scrapings, or tests, that your Vet has done. :crossfingers: 🍀

That sounds really, really good. To go from always wanting to leave the room, and leaving the room, going upstairs,...to be able to sleep while he's in the room,...sounds like they are moving in the right direction.

That 'wobbly rusty purr' ...must sound interesting. :musicnote:
(Was it like the singer of Fleetwood Mac,...Stevie Nicks...in uniquely sounding vocal tone and pitch. haha. Nevermind me, I'm sure it was just 'uniquely sounding Audrey'...since it does seem she has many, many different vocalizations in her repertoire.)

Audrey on a few occasions has chosen to sit in the cardboard box while Elliot runs at her, and she acts all outraged and swipes and hisses at him. But I'm like, lady, you don't have to sit in the box, you chose to!
"But I'm like, lady, you don't have to sit in the box, you chose to!"

:crackup:Lol. I'm sorry, I shouldn't be laughing this hard, right now, but I cannot help it. :spew:
It sounds like your two cats are 'playing much the same way as little kids do'.
Actually I think that many cats play this exact same way.

(That box only becomes 'important' if one cat seems to favour it...and then the box...becomes the 'only box' worth 'fighting over and trying to claim'. Is it the location, the smell, the shape...who knows...but suddenly that is the 'holy grail' of boxes. And woe to whoever tries to claim it back. 📦 🤼‍♀️ 🥇 😸 )
Cats are so entertaining,...sometimes frustrating...but still very, very entertaining to watch.

"But I'm like, lady, you don't have to sit in the box, you chose to!"
Lol. Okay. I better stop laughing....Or else I'll getting nothing done today.
(I'm going to go look for some boxes later on,...and see what my cats do, later on.  )
Here is a pic of them watching birds-- I won't say together, but near to one another:
Goodness, they are beautiful Moggielady. :cloud9:
To me, that does look pretty much together.
(I wonder if watching birds, for cats, ...is like watching a sporting event...or the daily news programs, weather reports, traffic updates, etc.)
Really wonderful photo. :) 🐦 :blackcat::caticon:

:musicnote:

Really wonderful photo. :) 🐦 :blackcat::caticon:
So glad you liked the photo, cat nap! :)

We are still awaiting a diagnoses for the skin issue. I'm hoping to get more info tomorrow: they will have been watching the 2nd skin culture for a week by then. The first one they took didn't grow. Frustratingly Audrey has developed some scaliness on one of her ears now too.

Good news from today is that we gave them the run of the house for a few hours, and Audrey settled herself in her bed like normal, and Elliot raced around the room but didn't annoy her too much and eventually lost interest and wandered downstairs, where he remained: so it's a huge relief that letting them both loose for more than a couple hours doesn't result in any escalation (yet). Actually I wonder if Audrey was more relaxed because she could access her bed anytime she wanted. He popped back up quite a few times, and she seems to have just slept through it!

Hoping that your news today from the Vets was good. (All Paws and fingers crossed here, for luck. :crossfingers: :greenpaw::bluepaw:)

It does make sense that Audrey being able to sleep in her own bed,...anytime she likes, would make her more relaxed...and being more relaxed would also cause less stress over all.

Also great that even though Elliot pops in and out of her room, ...she just sleeps away. :sleep2:
No need to fuss,...be on guard, ...or hiss the little cat away...anymore.
Hopefully, Elliot keeps up with being respectful to Audrey...and Audrey comes downstairs on her own, ...after getting her beauty rest...(which for cats...is most of the day...I think. :catlove::rolleyes2:)

🥰 Thanks cat nap! Audrey had been asleep too, moments before I took the photo.
Of course this lasted maybe 30 minutes before she decided to get down, and then she had to start growling to announce, 'I am moving, don't try anything', at which point Elliot woke up, raced after her, and got a bop on the head. So there is still a long way to go...

Okay, so I might have gotten a tad bit overly excited by that last photo.

But only because I looked at the previous photo, too,...and thought,...well "a picture says a 1000 words"...so if Moggielady posts nothing but photos from now on...then..."the cat intro story of Audrey and Elliot"... will unfold.
Problem though, I realized...is that you're right...we don't actually know what happened before or after the photo was taken.:dunno::lol:
So I guess, unless there are arrows and diagrams...(and pictionary like drawings)....then written updates are equally informative.:agree:

Anyhow, yes, I guess, like you said...there is still a long way to go...but it's still fabulous that you are able to get these beautiful moments on photos.
I wondered if the soft blanket they were laying on ...was somehow magical...and that's why you were able to capture that special moment. haha.

Hopefully, Elliot just learns that there are good times and bad times...as to when it's okay to chase after Audrey.
Though, him being a kitten...and a little hard headed...may take him a while to learn how to navigate around her.

Maybe you could just dole out some more treats before she ends up waking up and growling...when you catch them in these kinds of special moments. :blackcat:
Then again, ...that means you'd be waking them up...and probably interfering with the natural way ..things will progress.🤔
Not to mention, interrupting their good naps and relaxing time...(so I just realized that the above idea is really, really bad.)
