its a long story, I have a almost 2 year old black short hair male. Last Tuesday, early morning he was sleeping on my bed like normal no issues. Then out of no where he jumps off my bed and starts to throw up. I did not think much of it, as cats are known for this, hair balls and what not. Well the throwing up did not stop. He kept throwing up. I rushed him to the vet that morning and come to find out he was backed up with a lot of poo. Was not eating or drinking. The vet gave me stool softeners and said if that does not work, come back in the morning. Well it did not work and I had to do a enema with him twice. Took him home and still would not eat or drink. She was putting fluids under his skin when this was going on. Brought him back to the vets and she did a ultra sound on him and X-ray and said that his gut was stuck, she called it a ileus. I kept him in the vets for 2 days while they gave him a drug to try to kick start things again. Brought him home saturday with 2 types of drugs. One to help with being sick to his tummy and the other for his gut. Still he has not eaten or drank anything but the vet was still doing fluids under his skin. Come sunday we did not see much improvement if at all. She was able to meet me at the office and we gave him a steroid shot, and more fluids. She also gave me a drug to help boost his wanting to eat. Still no eating or drinking. Monday came around and i brought him back into the vets and they did more fluids. Still no eating or drinking. I gave him the drug to help boost his wanting to eat which I understand can take a bit to work. I started to force feed him a Vet diet with water in a suringe as he is still not eating or drinking. I am hoping this will kick start things and make him feel better with some food. Mind you its not a whole lot only 3ml every hour which the vet said is fine at this point. He has not thrown it up at all. I am looking for anyone that has gone through this, or may have some info for me. He has lost a lot of muscle in the last week from this. Please anyinfo would be grate.

if he doesn’t get better soon. I’d suggest a different vet .they may have missed something. It sounds like he may have ate something he shouldn’t have and it may be stuck in his belly.. surgery may be needed to get it out. Best regards!!! Hope he gets better soon and I hope u get the help u need!!

Thats what I thought, however the vet looked at him and and did a ultra sound and said she did not see anything. He is not known for eating strange things. When she did the ultra sound she said his tummy was vary large and filed with fluid which was from his bowls not moving things through. There was no movement from his bowls, which is that ileus. If I dont see him get any better I will talk to a different vet. However, we are limited on how many vets we have in the area.

Remember that all tests are your property and can be taken to a new vet to study. You paid for them and they do not belong to the first vet. I am sorry that you are facing this.

Hmmm 🤔 maybe you can call another vet . Tell them what’s going on maybe they can help with some advice! But then again most vets will tell you just to bring the kitty in . I am sorry you are going through this with your kitty 🥺 I have 5 cats! I absolutely love cats ! I have always had cats in my life! Even growing up!

If he has an ileus, that is the end result, not the cause. it's the cause that has to be treated. So whatever is causing it still needs to be addressed. Here's a pretty good rundown on ileus: Lack of Intestinal Motility in Cats | PetMD

When they did the enemas, did anything come out? And has he had any bowel movements since then? I know he hasn't eaten much at all, but if he was really backed up, there could still have been something left in there. Also, have they done any blood work onhim to see if there are any infections brewing? sometimes that can be the cause of an ileus.

Are you giving him an anti-nausea drug along with the appetite stimulant? And are you syringing in any fluids aside from what it takes to thin out the food?

One of my cats had ileus once. A course of medicine (sucralfate I think?) resolved everything.

Your vet can contact a veterinary school or another vet hospital for a courtesy consult at no charge. Sometimes a head scratching case needs a few more vets to look at to figure out what is wrong.

A feeding tube may be needed if your cat will not eat on his own and appetite stimulants are not working.

Take him to a veterinary specialist hospital- blue pearl or a university hospital. This sounds life threatening.

I've had 2 cats rushed to the emergency vet- one was diagnosed as IBD (inflammatory bowel) and the other was diagnosed with intestinal lymphoma. Both are doing well with treatment.

The local vets were stumped with the IBD case, as she stopped eating and drinking, threw up everything. We did 4 days of fluids under the skin- I took her in daily, anti- nausea meds, started her on prednisolone and she improved immediately, but I really don't know if that did it, or if she had a blockage that passed by itself. I did give her miralax orally with water in a syringe. Very touch and go. I was convinced I would need to euthanize her but she made a dramatic recovery. I withheld food during that time, as any food would cause vomiting. If I could get fluids in her orally, that was a good thing.

2nd cat presented with gradual weight loss (could feel shoulder bones under your hand), then he started vomiting and not keeping food down. They immediately thought obstruction and wanted to do a $1500 exploratory surgery. I decided to wait- a week of eating/vomiting, getting fluids at the vet, repeated x rays. Finally opted to go to the specialist and get an ultrasound done- next time I will go to the specialist immediately instead of wasting money on x rays and inconclusive tests. He was started on chemotherapy and prednisolone and immediately improved (gained 2 lbs of weight). Chemo sounds expensive but for this drug it is $60 for 6 months worth (so very reasonable). It also is a cancer that tends to respond well to treatment (if it is cancer). We don't really know if it is cancer vs inflammatory bowel disease. He has severe constipation all the time and is constantly on miralax, although his weight looks good now. His original diagnosis was ileus (same as your cat).

SO my thoughts on this are that your cat 1) needs a laxative such as miralax 2) possibly has an obstruction 3) possibly has cancer 4) may improve with treatment with prednisolone (in case of IBD) or chlorambucil (chemo). 5) another possibility is pancreatitis (which tends to occur with IBD).

Anyhow- please take your cat to see an Internal Medicine specialist.

I completely agree that if you can do so, going to a specialist right away saves time and money in the long run.
