So I woke up to find blood and clot and bump behind my cat’s ear. He is 3 years old male and we live in a multi cat household. The tomcats usually get into fights with each other and I have seen some scratches here and there often. However I woke up to this sight today and I’m not sure whether it was a result of him fighting and getting his head hit on some edge or something else. I have put cold compress and Betadine. The vets in my area are closed today and I can only visit them tomorrow. Please let me know if anyone has faced something similar and how concerned should I be. I’m quite anxious and can’t wait till tomorrow to get the diagnosis and google is just not helping 😭

I hope the discoloration is the betadine! In that place it is safe to use on cats. With the swelling and the hair and skin loss it is almost certain to be an abscess. since it is open right now, already burst open, encourage drainage and keep it clean. Most cats require an antibiotic to help it heal, but I have had many ferals who heal on their own, it takes a long time though, and there is always the chance the 'poisons' in the abscess can get into the bloodstream. I would take him in to get an antibiotic if possible, unless you see it getting smaller and better in the next few days. These take a LONG time to heal and to regrow the hair, many months.
you do realize that tomcats will fight and cause these abscesses more and more? Getting them neutered, which is inexspensive compared to spaying a female, would drastically cut down, even maybe eliminate injuries. you are lucky an eye or ear hasn't been torn off. I know this for a fact because of the many feral and stray cats I have had neutered, Big toms will walk right by a neutered boy that they constantly fought a few months before. It takes up to 6 weeks for the hormones to leave their bodies. Please have him neutered.

Try to make sure that any discharge and/or betadine from getting their ear because it could cause an ear infection. I would definitely try to get them in to a vet as soon as possible and try to separate them from other cats as well.

Do you have an emergency veterinary clinic near you or can you drive him to one since you said your own vet is closed today? The wound looks painful and the sooner he can be seen and treated the better. Please keep us posted on his progress.

Do a good search for emergency vets near you or vets near you in general.

Definitely be getting your boys neutered ASAP. Fighting is not okay to have constantly going on in your home. That's a ton of stress on the cats as well as emergencies like this.
Be cautious and keep him separate from other cats and indoors until this heals up completely

Hi. If he was my cat, I would get the betadine off of that. Cats, especially white cats with pink skin are extremely sensitive to things applied topically and betadine is caustic. If he was my cat, I would do warm compresses as opposed to cold. I would get him to the vet as soon as possible. But definitely, I would get that betadine off.
