This morning he started favoring his left front leg refusing to put any weight on it. I felt of the shoulder, leg and foot joint with no reaction from him. No swelling or tenderness , age about 8. He still eats and climbs to his perch on his cat tower, but kind of reluctantly. When he walks, he limps not putting weight on the leg. Stayed out all day in his heated house until I made him come in

he is in good health, not overweight, eats well, etc.

my fear is not peeing or drinking because he has to stir the litter with his front paws. So being male my worry is blockage. When he pees it’s about the size of a half dollar so his plumbing is small. . Now we live out and getting into a vet is almost impossible. Largest town is about 80 miles one way. Oh, and the last time he did have to go was a disaster. Getting him into the carrier, bit me, growling, etc.

question is there anything I can give him otc for pain? I’ve used chondroidin is the past on my older cats…seems to work.

please help

I would not give your cat any OTC pain meds of any kind. Chondroitin is a joint supplement, not a pain med and would not likely help in the short term, especially if there is an injury involved. While you checked his joints, there could be something going on with his paw that you can't check for or didn't see. And, you moving his joints around is not exactly the same thing as him applying pressure to take steps.

Any cat that is limping like that, and gives you cause to think he won't use the litter box because of it, is reason enough to contact a vet. The likelihood is that he will pee outside the box, instead. Watch out for that so you know he is peeing. I suppose you could wait until tomorrow to see if the limping is less, but you really still need to reach out to a vet.

Your cat is getting old enough that he is going to require periodic vet checks, just to ensure that as he ages anything that is going on is caught in enough time to treat. For the future, you might start talking to a vet nearest to you about the idea of medicating him so that you can manage to get him in for checkups.

Thanks he peed last night at his usual time and amount. Eating and drinking this morning…back out in catcatraz in his heated house. Limp is better. Thanks for your response
