Hello,

I got a cat roughly one month ago-- a 6 year old shy rescue from another country. He was living on the streets for a while (they don't know how long) before he came to the shelter. Even with the volunteers there, he was shy and hissing at them though he lets them touch him and loves being pet.

For the entire 4 weeks I have had him, he has been hiding under the bed. At the beginning of the second week, he had an eye infection that I had to take him to the vet on bonqat for (even then he was terrified). I had to block off access to under the bed to give him eyedrops 3x a day (though he managed to somehow claw and bite and push his way through every barrier I put up) but his eye infection cleared up after a week and I let him back under the bed. I always gave him a churu treat every time and he was generally never really aggressive, only scared but let me pet him and give him the eyedrops but the interaction would take place with him pushed into a corner, trying to literally merge with the wall. When I took him home from the vet visit when he was on bonqat, he let me pet him and was even making air biscuits whilst I was petting him :( but then when he was off it, he was terrified again.

I feed him at 11am (wet food) and 8pm (wet food) and some dry food over night. I didn't get any information to what wet food he was fed at the shelter and trying some brands, he seems rather picky and leaves most of his wet food (except for tuna lol) though he still came out to eat at 11am and 8pm respectively. Since a few days, he has not been doing this though and I had to offer him the food later. Is this okay though or should I stick to my feeding times, so if he doesnt want to eat at 11am, I don't feed him until 8pm? He generally seems to prefer dry food a lot more than wet food and he drinks a lot, should I just feed him wet food once a day and for the rest I give him dry food? I'm a little lost.

During the first few days of being here he climbed onto things and just checked everything out but would meow nearly the entire night. Now he comes out to sleep in a bed I got him and recently he has been sleeping on a runner carpet right in front of my bed (both only when I go to bed), so he has definitely been making progress. Also when I clean his litterbox, he comes really close and just watches me.I understand that he will probably take a lot of time to settle in but is there anything I can do to help him settle in more? I tried virtually everything, sitting or laying near him when he's under the bed and just reading or doing similar stuff, gently speaking to him, playing (he doesn't really seem interested in playing. I tried like 6 different toys at least), Feliway diffusers, just to name a few. I'm honestly worried about him skipping food, like he sniffs it and goes "nope", yesterday I had to push it under the bed for him to eat-- which confuses me, as he usually always came out to eat? I tried adding different toppings-- dried fish, freeze dried chicken hearts, etc but he just doesn't seem interested. He has no problem eating the dry food I put down for him though, so I think it's nothing serious (or at least, I hope so). I'm also worried about him potentially being bored since he doesn't want to engage in anything but looking out the window.

Sorry if this seems a little over the top, it's my first cat lol. I love him a lot.

Hello and welcome to TCS. :wave2: And congrats on being a first time cat parent. :petcat: Hopefully in time your boy will be more confident and want to give and receive affection.

Since he'd been living on the streets, being in a home is probably completely new to him. So that's probably why he's hiding. It's not unusual for even pet cats to hide when first adopted. Some cats are just more confident and outgoing than others.

It really sounds like you're doing everything you can to help him settle in. It may just simply take longer, due to him being a former stray.

Since you're a first time cat owner, here's a TCS article with a ton of info:

About food, some cats just do not like canned food. So there's nothing wrong with giving him dry food. Maybe eventually you'll find a canned food he likes.

Hi and ditto on the welcome!! I can't really offer any more than the above, but I do agree with all of it.

For now, as said above, let him eat the dry food, and just offer some wet food 'on the side'. You can always work on getting him to eat more wet food down the road, once he is better settled in. The odds are he was likely fed more dry food, if not exclusively, at the shelter, and who knows what he ate when he was roaming the streets, so I doubt wet cat food is something that he considers 'normal' food.

Thank you both! I appreciate it a lot. I've been feeding him mostly dry food and just offering him some wet food here and there and he has been eating a little better.

Thank you so much for the different resources as well!! I have been looking into them and will continue to do so. Yesterday he even came out whilst I was offering him a churu treat and even let me pet him!

Agree... This will just take some time. You said you got him from another country - do they speak a different language there? In additional to a new place, new smells, new sounds, voices would surely sound a bit different too if different language or accent. Patience and being calm and quiet will help. Make sure you do some "normal life" stuff around him too so he gets used to your presence, rhythm, etc.

Hello L lame6 and fur-son, and welcome to TCS! You've been doing a great job, and with the suggestions you've already received here, you and your cat will probably be enjoying life together very soon. Time, love, and patience are key and it sounds like he is slowly coming round to accept and trust you. Does he like his churu treats? Those, and dry food, plus fresh water, should keep him healthy; I would continue to offer him wet food daily, using the small 3-oz. tins if he won't eat a lot. My cats have pretty much always preferred food in gravy -- they love that texture -- and the "flaked" texture. I feed Blue Buffalo Wilderness varieties of this type, and Soulistic. Not sure what is available where you live. I get repeat-delivery from petco(dot)com, which entitles me to a small discount and lets me tweak the order whenever I want, adding or deleting things at will. A lot of people use Chewy(dot)com. But if you're still experimenting to see what your mancatto likes, probably going to a physical store would be better, because that way you can just choose individual tins instead of cases. Be sure to keep us in the loop *and we love pix here at TCS!*:welcomesign::cheerleader:

Hello!! Thank you all for the welcome and advice! I really, really appreciate it. To answer some questions, I did get him from another country with a different languag. He came from an Eastern European country whilst I live in Western Europe-- so big language barrier here.

Also, he loves Churu treats! We have this little ritual now that at night, when he feels most confident and comes out the most, I sit down on the ground and hold a churu treat in front of him. He comes out and eats it, lets me pet him and then goes under the bed again lol, it's really cute.

Regarding the wet food, I put him back on the wet food he previously ate and he seems to be chowing down on it again. It's confusing because when I switched him to a wet food that had no sugar and way more meat, he was fine with it for a few days before he lost interest so.. back to the first one we go. Really silly cat. I'll probably slowly transition him to the other wet food eventually by adding little bits of it to the food he likes, but do you guys have any idea what to do with the rest of pouch once opened? I only have pouches, so I can't use can lids but I also don't want to throw away an entire pouch every time :(.

I also added some pictures of the old, grumpy man! I can't really take any good ones yet because I'm still kept at an arms length most of the time :(. The first picture is from when he was on bonqat and making air biscuits when I was petting him. The third picture is him everytime I go to sleep-- he comes out from under my bed and goes to sleep there for the majority of the night. Also a little question on the side, how much do your cats sleep? I feel like this guy sleeps way more than 12-16 hours lol.

If they are the kind of pouches I think they are, they should be OK to close the top and maybe use something like a clothes pin to keep it closed. Depending on when he will eat the remainder, you could keep it in the fridge. That may require warming it up if he doesn't like cold food. Setting the pouch in a dish of hot water for a couple of minutes, just to take the chill off it might be enough.

He may be sleeping more just because he doesn't feel comfortable enough to do much else but 'hide'. That could change once he has adapted more. But, tbh, I think cats sleep a lot regardless. I have even read that cats can sleep as much as 20 hours a day, but of course every cat varies. Right now, I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Are you sitting with him at times during the day, even if/when he is under the bed? Maybe read a book out loud as you sit there on the floor near him, just to pass the time away. He will see you and hear your voice, which should help him to acclimate to you even more.

Oh, he's gorgeous! What is his background, age, etc.? He's a little Lion King!:redheartpump::gingercat2::redheartpump::goldstar:
Since he hasn't been with you for long, he will need time to adapt to your schedule and his new environment, food, etc. You've done great in giving him food he knows and will eat, and working higher quality foods into his menu is a great idea, too. As for the pouches, do you have plastic food savers with lids? You can put the pouch in one and refrigerate it for a day -- I wouldn't expect him to be interested in it for more than a day's storage and you may want to leave it out at room temperature for an hour or so before serving.
If you know any endearments in the language he was used to, you may say those to him multiple times a day to make him feel more at home. Other posters have given great suggestions, too.

I put opened pouches in ziplock sandwich baggies, or a very small container with a cover, so that I know it's airtight.

Hi L lame6
I just want to welcome you to TCS and tell you that your doing a wonderful job with your first kitty kid- you LOVE him and that's the main ingredient

Dry food ,clean water sources, clean litter box is just great- cats sleep 75percent of the time, that's roughly 17hrs a day .. try to keep him engaged during the day and that will help him to adjust to your schedule and he won't whine as much during the night when he is used to being active - he will acclimate

As far as language,no worries - cats understand and become familiar with your tone more so than actual words- if I say "sit, fit, bit, hit, mit or kit ' to my cats it's all the same to them and they will respond. Everyone they meet speaks a foreign language to them but they will respond because they don't only go by your tone but even more so your body language and facial expressions that accompany your voice- he's studying " your language" everyday❤
What's his name? He's a beautiful fellow- Congratulations to both you and him.Keep up the great work- it has great rewards 👍

Heya!

Thank you for the advice with the pouches! He's been eating properly lately, even with the other food mixed in. (yay!). As for his background, unfortunately not much is known. He's around 6 years old. People saw him living on the streets for a while before he was caught and taken to the shelter, where he spent about a year before I got him. Even at the shelter he would hiss at the volunteers, though let them pet him.

So, bit of an update, he does love to go to his little pink bed to sleep in everytime I go to bed and turn off the lights. A few days ago when I went to go to the bathroom, I noticed that he didn't get up from there and run away, so I sat down and started petting him. To my surprise, he started purring immediately and was making biscuits!! Now he allows me to do this everytime with the same reaction (though I try not to overdo it). For the past few days he has also been having zoomies at 6am on the dot lol.

Letting you pet him, and him purring, is a major update!!! You must be so thrilled. Zoomies at 6 AM, not quite so thrilling, LOL. But shows he's getting comfortable and confident in his new home. :catlove:

What a great UPdate on so many levels, especially the purring and biscuits! Very glad he has found his way to you after spending all that time being homeless.
Fluff, who is an ex-colony, ear-tipped, longtime foster cat, used to use his box at late-thirty and then announce it to me. IDK why. I just know that he did. He's calmed down some and uses his box at different times now, sometimes announcing and sometimes not. He seems like he's digging to Australia when he uses it, too. *cats!*
