I have a cat (kitten) who is pooping in my dahlias pots out on my deck for a couple days. The poop is loaded with worms.I spoke with a neighbor early this morning to see if she knew what cat it could be.When I mentioned this one cat that I thought was possible, she thought it was likely it was him.She has not been able to get near him( which is unusual for her) only his three siblings. She has not seen him for two days.
I am thinking of setting a have a heart to see if we can get him.
My question is: Is there a safe OTC deworm medication that is safe for a young cat? I don't want to do more harm then good. I am thinking fleas also very possible.
I don't know if this cat's condition is beyond this simple intervention at this point as I have not see him.

How do the worms looks? lenghy and wriggle, as worms do? If so, its probably the common round worms...

And thus, there are many dewormers, also ots. Usually the active substance is Pyrantel....

If you can get Milbomax, or something made by Bayer - these are surely safe.

If unsure, google on the preparates you have in your zoo- shop.... Not all are of good quality.

if they are sooner alike rice corns, its probably tape worms. Kittens have these usually from fleas, whom are inbetween hosts for tapeworms...

Pyrantel or Revolution wont take them... You must have some all round... Milbomax takes both. Drontal by Bayer is another good choice.

I picked up Drontal enough for four cats. My neighbor got the two orange cats that were the siblings of the still missing black cat on her porch last night.. They are more easily approached .I got the other black cat in a trap last night that was the third sibling. We got them isolated and treated them for fleas and worms that they all had with the Drontal. They all had a significant worm load but not to the level that was in my flower beds or pots. So I don't know it , seems to me that the missing cat had a higher load of worms. Traps are all reset. I did a walk around this morning but did not see the last black cat.We have red foxes here so if this kitty is sick that is a problem.

fluffpaws fluffpaws suggested Elanco when my rescue feral Billy vomited up two horrible intact tapeworms a couple of weeks ago. I ordered it online and it was there the next day, I crushed it in his food and he ate it well. Everything seems totally clear now. No vomiting, no signs of any tapeworms and checking his litter everything looks good. I can recommend that from experience. The people on this site have been so helpful with advice and I have taken it all on board. It has been invaluable practically and mentally. I wouldn't have reached the 7 week mark without them

Update: Got three of the kittens and mom dewormed about a week ago and they are doing great. Thanks to StefanZ StefanZ for your advice on what product to use. The two orange kittens will be adopted into a home next week. Unfortunately, we have not found the fourth kitten. One of my neighbors is considering adopting mom and the black kitten but that probably won't happen until September

UPDATE: We got him! I thought he was was really gone. We were away with a family health issues, we came back Monday and after talking to our neighbors still no little black cat.Yesterday morning my husband looks out the window and there he is still as skinny as can be in our driveway. I could not get him to come near me even with sardines, but he seemed interested.Set traps and by 9:30 last night he was in the trap.Got Drontal in him, he has a huge load of worms. We have him isolated. There is something up with his one eye, maybe conjunctivitis. I have an appointment for him at the vet but not until Monday unless something opens up. I think I will send a photo of his eye if I can get one because maybe I can get medicine for it beforehand. That should be interesting because he is not friendly and is scared.Vet wants me to try a get gabapentin in him with is probably the safest way.

I bought a new treat for my cats called Churu Bites, when I opened them and looked at them I thought what a great vessel for medicating a hard to medicate cat.And my cat was crazy in love with them . You may have to cut the med if half depending on the size of the pill but there is like ten in a pack and they are also inexpensive .Just a suggestion.Congratulations on catching him.

Funny you should mention Churu Bites. I bought them for Izzy as a just in case for med issues. I ask Chewy if they would work for that and they replied no they believed they would crumble and recommended pill pockets. Well, with a little patience and creativity you can use them pretty well. I bought the crab and scallop as Izzy does not get seafood cat food........ Her eyes almost popped out of her head. Bonus they might be the only product Churu sell without gums. Izzy cannot eat any gums.I think you are right they may be a good option for this little guy as they would be different and he might just chow it down.

Thank you fluffpaws fluffpaws and Kwik Kwik for the temptations video. You never know what I might need to try with this little guy.
That was the only way I got "some" gabapentin in Timmy - never know when he's going to eat a treat at all plus he chews everything to bits

How little( age) is this boy? This is the kitten you're talking about, right? Surely he's going to need antibiotics for that eye so your Doc should be able to inject long acting but probably will need a daily ointment as well so he's going to learn to be handled quickly, lol. The little ones wrapped like a burrito usually come around easily enough and since you mentioned he is an orange boy -:well,I think y'all know what I think of them❤❤❤❤❤

He is a mottled black .He had two very adorable orange siblings who were the friendliest, they are in a new home after being checked out etc. He is about 4 1/2 months old maybe a little older. We don't know and our neighbors don't know where mom and kittens came from, but suspect they were dumped out here in the middle of the night.
We went to our vet yesterday morning to pick up ointment for that eye. Thankfully I have my husband here because little boy is not a willing patient. I ( or maybe we) are taking him to the vet tomorrow. I have never seen a cat with this bad of a worm load. He has been treated for worms, but I think I will still take a stool sample in case they want to check it. They all had worms but not to this level. He was pooping handful of just worms when we trapped him, so I don't know if they will want to do bloodwork.
We did not even contact our very small TNR as we live near a dairy that has cats for rodent control and it seems the TNR think all these cats belong to them.
Plus they have a thing about 'release' as in you must put them back outside.
His mom and other black sibling will be going to their new home by the end of the month or early September.
He will probably be more work then mom or his siblings to socialize but we all agree he cannot be put back outside. It would be a death sentence.

Well you know how I feel about release.... Not my thing

I bet those orange babies were easy peasy for sure- you'll handle this lil guy just fine,no doubts here❤

This little fellow will just take TLC,a bit of time and patience- you'll be keeping him then?

That was about how old my Max was when I snatched him up from outside - he was the only one of the litter that survived the parking lot. My neighbor was feeding the Mama( she feeds ,doesn't nueter and the cycle continues) you have no idea how many of her visitors I've taken to have spayed, neutered, vaxed and adopted - whenever one goes missing she asks if I've seen it,lol .... Max I kept though ,she visits him
