Well, I have one or two more ferals to trap, and tonight is the night to catch one. I have an appointment at Spay/Neuter clinic tomorrow morning. The feral usually comes around 9 pm. It is hot here in the Midwest, so I don't think he should be in a covered trap all night outside. I will bring him inside (I'm not excited about doing this!). I'll put him in a bathroom with the door closed. I'm worried my two fixed male cats will smell him and freak out. In fact, I know this will happen as I live in a small house. Any suggestions??

Your cats probably are going to smell him, but if there are feral cats around outside they already know he is there. I don't think this will freak them out too much. I've had numerous feral cats in my bathroom overnight while they wait for their TNR appointments. The worse thing that happens is some of my indoor cats will spray the bathroom door. Put some of those puppy pee pads down and tape a few over the door to make cleaning up easier.

The feral cat may need to pee while he is in the trap too. If the trap will fit in the bathtub it makes cleaning easier. Otherwise stand the trap up on a couple of blocks and put some pee pads underneath. This will make it more comfortable for him than having to stand in a wet trap all night.

Good luck with your trapping!

Well, spit. But that will give you a chance to get a supply of puppy pee pads! 🍀🍀🍀 for next time!!!

Never mind, keep trying. Sometimes it takes a while.

What bait are you using? I've had a lot of success with KFC and with smoked fish.

I've been using canned wild-caught salmon in it's own juices. I've got him going into the trap...but he didn't show the other night. I worry b/c I've fixed about 5 cats in my backyard lately, and none of those 5 are showing up anymore. I wonder if Carl Jr. is scaring them away, since he is the only one not fixed now??

It is possible, but it is also possible that those cats are a bit wary now, and will return. Sometimes it can take a few weeks.

How long ago were the other cats fixed? Mature tom cats still retain enough testosterone to father kittens up to 30 days after being neutered, so it generally takes a while for them to lose their tom cat behavior too. Spayed female cats will seem like rivals for food and territory to a dominant male, so they try to chase them off. They won't go far though. Once the dominant males has been fixed and starts to calm down they'll come back to a regular food source.

How did your trapping go, has Carl been back?
