The store had told us to expect delivery of the mattress Monday between 2 and 4. They showed up at 10:30 in the morning. I did the mad dash to get the sheets off the bed while they were getting the new mattress ready to bring inside. We got everything straightened out, gave the guys their tips and off they went to deliver more stuff. Tabby loves the mattress; she pretty much spent the entire night sprawled out in bed. Mollipop? Not so much. She didn't like being on the pillow at my head and flopped down on Rick's side of the bed. But after Rick came to bed, she left to sleep elsewhere in the house. I missed her last night. Muffin doesn't care much for it either.

Terribly windy outside today! Rick is working outside; he says the temp isn't so bad, but the wind is horrid.
  • Scooped the boxes.
  • The brine for the turkey is cooling outside on the back deck. Ms. Turkey will go into her brine in the fridge around 2:00 this afternoon and will stay there until tomorrow morning. Cornbread is cooling on the counter. It will get cut up and used in our stuffing. Took the sausage out of the freezer to thaw until Thursday morning, when it will be browned and added to the stuffing. (I did the cranberry relish on Saturday, so it has time for the flavors to meld a bit for Thursday. I have my time-line planned out for everything, but the turkey. We've read so many different times, temps, etc to smoke a turkey that my head is ready to explode.
  • Vacuum, swiffer, etc.
  • Wash the tablecloth and napkins I'm planning to use for T-Day.

Give the bed a little time and it will start to smell more familiar to the cats.

I also add sausage -Italian - to my stuffing. The secret ingredient to great stuffing. I put a cheesecloth bag in the turkey and some stuffing in it. I also mix up a pan of stuffing with sausage in it for the oven. It comes out crispy on top and bottom and then I mix the wet stuffing from the turkey in before serving. Lots of juicy stuffing for those who like it soft and crispy for those who like it that way.

Aunts hearing yesterday went well. Both her appointed attorney and the court fully agreed that a permanent conservatorship was needed. Feels really good to have that settled.

Today is a quiet day of cooking and prep. I will get the Pretzel salad made and turkey roasted and gravy base made. The house is clean but I will give it a once over - my sister notices everything and will always bring it up if she spots anything.

Mollipop will sleep in bed, but only on Rick's side. When he comes to bed, she leaves. She has tried the pillow at my head, but she doesn't feel comfortable there, esp when the head of the bed in raised as it creates a space between the headboard and the mattress.

Rick is back outside doing his thing with the leaves.
I'm sick today...can't get rid of the dry heaves.
  • The pumpkin pie is baking. The celery and onions are chopped up, ready for tomorrow's stuffing. Ms. Turkey is out of the brine, rinsed, dried off, and will do a drying period in the fridge until early tomorrow morning, when she'll get the rub. Will make the gravy later on today.
  • One load of laundry in the washer.
  • A good wipe-down in the kitchen is in order. I'd like to wash the kitchen floor.

Looked at all the photos my son took on his overseas trip he just came back from.
Wrapped dahlia tubers in polar fleece and put in my vehicle to try to keep them a little warmer
Eating dinner with our son before he has to leave
Crashing and sleeping hopefully later

Yesterday, I only planned on doing some laundry and putting up the outdoor Christmas lights. What I ended up doing was...

Laundry
Outdoor lights
Clean 2 bathrooms
Dust my bedroom
Dust the living room
Undecorate Fall and Thanksgiving decor from living room and kitchen
Put out Christmas decor in living room and kitchen

It's like this - yesterday I baked the first batch of six small loaves of fruitcake.
Fruitcake_2024-12_out of the oven.jpg

Baptized them with brandy (more brandy.) Let them cool and placed in individual plastic bags. Did other things. Brought plastic storage tub up from basement, went to put little fruitcakes in it. One, two . . . wait a minute! There are only five! The sixth one is in the dining room, under the buffet, with holes chewed in the plastic bag in a couple of places and very minor nibbling on the cake. The wretch! Bet it was Mr Poe. Guess it is my fault but who would think that a cat wanted to catch and kill a fruitcake.

Oh well. Let me throw some more firewood in the stove, which is devouring wood more enthusiastically than cat eating fruitcake, and get busy with today's activities.

Today I need to
1) Bake a second batch of fruitcake.
2) Doing laundry - bed sheets and a second load as the man from Glass Castle is coming Monday morning to install the glass doors on our magnificent new shower. It will mean that A) we can use the shower and B) gets them out from the walk-through closet where the glass doors have been stored.
3) Continue distributing seasonal decorations here and there around the house. First, every year, is the goose girl and goose boy mobile that was bought in Norwalk CT so many years ago, decades actually. Then there's Mrs Tiggywinkle, the tomte my father made for me, etc.

So let me drink my coffee and get going.

Today was annual Christmas cookie baking day at my son‘s. Four hours, three kinds of his childhood favorite Christmas cookies, and a pizza lunch. Very enjoyable.

When ai came back the cat trapper lady came over and we tried to figure out the plan. Unfortunately mom came this afternoon without the kittens so on hold until they show up. m

I have to bring out garbage in the worst way. I have 3 bags calling me...

I've started saving money for a new Parrot Cage and a new bird. Gonna take me a year to save 3 thousand buckaroos... That weeping noise is my bank account.

Started looking for a temporary job at pet stores. See above for why, LOL. Plus it's something to do :)

First morning waking up to enough snow on the ground to have to clear it. I am going to clear and cleanup the porch as well that has been set up to trap mom and kittens. No sign them yesterday evening or overnight, so I am hoping they are in a warm and safe spot.

A lot of general clean up, straightening and things to be put away to be done.

Yesterday's dental visit (two smallish fillings) and summer-comforter-to-dry-cleaner took enough time that I decided to then head home rather than shop. This way I could help Himself with trash and recyclables - I collect, he takes down to street. It gets dark so early now.

Today I
1) Finally! located thermal blanket where it was stored away beginning of summer and so I could put it on our bed. So now layers are - flannel top sheet, thermal blanket, lamb's wool comforter, percale top sheet on which cats spend the night.
2) Yesterday,I bought a linen comforter cover from Land's End at 50% off. For CyberMonday (weird, I know.)
3) Went to Wal-Mart for bananas, distilled water for humidifiers, store brand English muffins (just as good as Thomas at half the price) and other things.
4) Stopped at the feed and mercantile to drop off empty egg cartons, then chitchat for a while. Someone had dropped off a few dozen eggs and said to give them away. I was a lucky recipient of one dozen. Considering how outrageous egg prices have become (butter also) I am delighted. We'll eat these eggs directly, rather than I use them for baking.

So it has gone. Will see how it goes.

Dropped off the cat traps back to the rescuer this morning. Momma is still showing up but the babies aren’t. Either they have died in our cold and snow, or whoever let them out is now keeping them in. Afterwards I went to the aunts house to do a check, anticipating I would also do some cleaning and sorting. Just not in the mood though so I left fairly quickly after arriving.

The ground was white when we got up this morning. It all vanished later in the day. More expected tonight.

We were very warm last night, with the thermal blanket added to the bedclothes. Himself very happy. A bit too warm for me.

Today our intermittent handyman was here. We dealt with buckets and tubs and pots that had collected near the garage. Some - the empty ones - went upside down along the side of the tool shed. Others - with potting soil, wood chips (semi-composted by now, and frozen solid from the cold weather) went into the tool shed. Then he and Himself went to the bottom of the driveway. Himself drove down with ATV and snow plow attached yesterday. They moved the bench-like boards-and-tree-rounds completely off the driveway for winter. Also moved the two large pots filled with soil also off driveway.

I'm working on the garden journals entry for my website. And periodically adding firewood to the wood burning stove.

Am hoping that tomorrow I will bake the third and last batch of fruitcake.
