Today

Himself moved a cartload of split firewood from where it was stacked near the log splitter to the wood storage area next to the basement door.

I used my nice LiON battery chain saw to cut more branches in the woods behind the house to 3 foot lengths. They've been moved out of the woods onto a pallet by the back lawn. Tomorrow, after Himself moves the next cartload of split wood he will pause as he passes around the house, collect, and move to the rack by the log splitter to be cut down to 18 inches, split as necessary.

Winter will, eventually, arrive. Best to be prepared.

Thanks guys! We spent the day working outside, pretty standard for us. Rick's birthday is this coming Wednesday, so we'll celebrate both days then. 51 years. Oy

While Rick mowed a bit of lawn (both with the push mower to trim and the riding mower), I cleaned out the asparagus bed. We have a good 12 or so asparagus spears pushing up so far. I love asparagus! Last year, I think we had enough to have asparagus twice a week during the month of May. Which is enough for him and me. I also did some weeding around in the beds around the WeShed. I had planted Little Leos last year, so this is their second year. They're just cheerful yellow flowers. My third azalea is finally pushing out; I was really worried about it because the deer were especially ravenous this past winter. The lilacs by the driveway are opening; I stand there and just breathe. I love the smell of lilacs.

He wants me to mow. I'm scared to death. He just got the new riding mower last year and I haven't touched it. If anybody does anything to that mower, it will be me. I was always the main mower and I enjoyed mowing lawn. But if I hit anything (tree root), I'll never hear the end of it. And I'm just not up for it. We have stories of me and riding mowers. I try, I really do. But things happen.
  • Sitting back here with my coffee. I gave up on the Cameron's coffee; it's the worst stuff I've ever had. Back to Green Mountain until Fire Dept has a sale or a good coupon. Then I'll get my beloved bourbon-infused. But no more Cameron's. Bad stuff. I need to scoop at some point, before I get anything else done. I have the chicken in its marinade to throw on the grill tonight.
  • Make the lemon meringue pie this morning. Rick will take a slab up to his Mom's when he takes the Kindle up. I need to put books on that for her. I'm not going along. All the residents are confined to their rooms because of that skin-thing going around, so it's drop it off at the front desk and they'll take it back to her. We're not even allowed to get her laundry right now.
  • Walk around the yard and deadhead daffodils.
I don't know if I mentioned this, but I tried a new cookie recipe the other day, for inside-out chocolate chip cookies. The recipe was from Sally's Baking Addiction, a chocolate cookie with white chips. They were OK, but nothing fantastic. They really flattened out, which I didn't like. Rick is not overly fond of chocolate; I'm the choco-holic in the family. Anyway, he suggested that we put them in the freezer; he like chocolate cookies frozen. Believe it or not, they're fantastic right from the freezer! But I won't make them again.

I woke up *super* late today (2:30pm :jawdrop:), so I didn't get much done until later. I moved some furniture and the cat boxes out of one of my basement rooms because it's going to be my pottery studio. I yanked off the baseboards and found some mold, ripped up the carpet and now I'm taking a break before I finish removing the underlayment. I might start painting tonight too, but I may just paint some Killz to get rid of the mold and paint tomorrow. I have a lot of paint so I'm going to mix a bunch together and see what color I get. Because I'll be filming myself making pottery for a YouTube channel I wanted to start, I'm going to aim for a lighter color (right now it is red and it makes the room feel gloomy.

I'm hoping to start putting vinyl plank flooring down next weekend (I got over 400 sq ft of it in a local auction for only $400 which would normally be over $1200 at Home Depot) but I'm kind of nervous to do it by myself and my dad is taking care of my grandparents at the moment because my grandpa is going into hospice soon, so he's understandably unavailable.

thank you, Winchester Winchester ! the effort to complete the settling in continues. i have a kitchen cart, and two cube storage units to put together still. the kitchen cart is missing one piece, so a replacement is being sent. the two cube storage units, the packages were both lost by UPS. :dunno: so replacements are being sent, too. in the meantime, i've got a break to concentrate on getting other things done.

today, i went to church, chatted with a couple friends, and am now here on the computer. i'll go over to spend time with a jigsaw puzzle shortly.

Sounds like a fun project. I put down the laminate flooring in my kitchen and vinyl is very similar except it is easier to cut. You don’t need alot of tools, a box cutter knife to cut the tiles, a metal ruler, a mallet or hammer and a install kit that has spacers in it and a tool to help push pieces together. The nice thing is that the pieces are small enough to be manageable and it’s easy to take apart if you make a mistake. The hard part is being down on your knees for a long time. You can do it!

I took the exact measurements of the room and the exact measurements of the planks and used Paint to do a mock up of how they will be laid out and it looks like it will be exactly 19 planks across, so that will make it a lot easier if I don't have to cut them the long way.

Yes, much less cutting!

Yesterday I was repotting dormant summer bulbs - eucomis, mirabilis, hippeastrum. More to do today.

Yesterday I dug two small forsythia and replanted elsewhere. They are not the typical one but could not find the label. Was going to do more today but it rained last night which is good for the two that were moved but it is looking very gray outside. Don't want to be in the middle of digging and have the skies open up.

Today I want to defrost the small refrigerator. And bake chocolate chip cookies. But first I'll drink my coffee.

Ugh... Found out, on Saturday, that I was exposed to Covid at the funeral!! Dm...
That was Wednesday--at the real funeral, and the following reception... My friend (who's husband passed) is very very sick.. She is vaccinated and one booster. She refuses to call her doctor for the ant-viral meds!! Her entire family came down with Covid!!

My friend, who I went with, is not concerned!! I cannot believe her!!

The building we live in, automatically did a building wide test, on Friday--all negative. I tested myself yesterday---negative.

It is really hard to find out the correct information for vaccinated people exposed to Covid.
From what I could find, it is: Masking for 5 days.. test on day 5---if negative, you are ok...
I am not feeling sick.. not at all. anxious, but not sick.

Geoffrey has a Specialist appointment tomorrow, Tuesday. I called and updated them. Got their information. It is ok for me to come in with a mask!! That will be day 6.

I will test myself tomorrow morning, before I get dressed.
~~~~
* Regular morning stuff
*phone calls
*rearranged stuff in closet---donating a case of food to Angell Medical Rescue Center, tomorrow.
* had to pick up a script at Rite-Aid... Asked Pharmacist. He said same as above!!! I can unmask, if I want, after 5 days of being symptom free...but watch for symptoms..
* It is an asthma day--so I used my inhaler
** Yes, I am masking with a KN-95 mask. I will continue to use it today--when I go down for supper, and tomorrow..
* Supposedly a Chicken Caesar Wrap for supper.. we will see.. probably all wrap....and lettuce.
artiemom artiemom I hope you continue to test negative. Good luck with G's vet appt. :hugs:
I think Rick and I went one day without a mask after we got the second booster. We didn't feel right, so we're back to masking. KN95 here, too.
We've been working outside. Rick set some branches and brush on fire in the garden yesterday. I walked around the yard, deadheading daffodils (I was going to do that on Sunday, but we had a lot of rain) and picking up branches to add to his bonfire. Worked on a bit of weeding here and there. Put the seedlings out on the deck for the afternoon, then take them back in when it starts to cool down. Little odds and ends.
  • The second of two loads of laundry is in the washer. Changed bed sheets.
  • Vacuum, swiffer, wipe, etc
  • Continue outside stuff.
ETA: I just received my surgery dates for the cataracts. I'm excited, but really nervous, too. Will post more as the dates get closer.
Geoffrey is going to have an endoscopy. He MAY have IBD. The IM Vet thinks it is warranted due to me needing to find out, and the fact that he has PICA. Because he was fasting, I caught him trying to gnaw on a hair brush, and the hard plastic on his spiral ball toy. The IMVet said that if he has IBD; it could be causing him to have the PICA.. never heard that before.
The fact that he is not having diarrhea or weight loss is strange--but he could still have IBD. He may not, and may just be over grooming. The IMVet does not believe in medicating pets, unless it is really necessary.
The first step, which I have already taken, (Cuz of my experience with Artie) is putting him on the novel protein diet.
So, just waiting for the appointment for the endoscopy. The IMVet does not do them. They will also do a full clean out of his ears, while he is under anesthesia. Everything else is fine with him. He also had blood drawn: CBC and Chemistry.
He also said that I have a really good cat. He said he would not do the endoscopy, but he is not dealing with all that I am and have been through with Artie.
Phone Call: UGH.. I hate this... man... I drive into Boston or My own appointments.. I would do it occasionally for a good friend.. but, I got a phone call from a 'friend' asking me to drive her into Boston, this Friday!! dam..
She has no family around here.. miles away.. one daughter in the same state, but.. of course, I am closer....
She is playing it very coy--- asking if I know of anyone who drives into my hospital.. ugh... She said she would pay for the ride.. dam..
It is not the money.. I do not want to start taking care of someone; or be responsible for their care. I did that for both my parents and I would for a good friend... but, this one is more of an acquaintance. WE are like oil and water.. We each bite our tongues.. She is so stubborn.. I just give up after I talk with her..
I have enough going on... With my own medical stuff.. Geoffrey... me trying to stretch myself into different things: book club, newspaper, bocce... I do not need more responsibilities... She is a manipulator....
Sorry, I am venting..
What do you guys think?
I do have to call her back... soon... Think I am going to tell her, something is on the verge of happening, and I am not sure it it will be that day or not... ... how does that sound... kind of not saying no, but getting me an out.. I have to seriously think this through.
If she's willing to pay, she should use Uber.
You to "Friend": I know how tough it can be to find a ride. You might try Uber. I wish I could help out, but I was exposed to COVID and to be safe, I'm not getting close to anyone. I would never put you at risk by riding closed up in a car with your for [however long it would be].
Keep your message simple. Repeat if necessary. The more excuses you try to find, the harder it gets. Just pick one reason why and stick to it! So if she says, "Oh, I'm not worried. It will be fine. You're okay."
You: I've been careful for two years and have to continue, for my own sake and yours, to be careful. I just can't risk it. I hope you find someone.
Rinse and repeat!
Tobermory Tobermory Excellent. That would work.
artiemom artiemom If you start it, she'll keep using you. Use Tobermory Tobermory 's plan. And you were exposed, so you're not fibbing. And if she doesn't care that you were exposed, well, you care. And that's enough. Short and sweet.
Dear Richard is 71 today! I was going to do the breakfast in bed thing for him, but my brother and SIL are coming up around noon and we're going out for a late lunch/early dinner. Rick wants to hit Red Lobster and we have a gift card. Whatever goes over the gift card, I'll take care of. (We have all these gift cards because we kept getting them as gifts and haven't gone much of anywhere because of Covid.)
I gave the car a good inside cleaning yesterday. Couldn't wash it because Rick hasn't turned on the outside water yet (and I can't reach it in the basement). And I refuse to pay car wash prices for something I can do at home. I like washing the car. Fortunately. I bet Rick hasn't washed a vehicle in well over 20 years, including his truck. As soon as he gets the water turned on, I'll wash the car. And then his truck (he will help me with the truck, but he hates washing vehicles).
We're not planning on doing much today.
  • Breakfast for the girls, emptied the dishwasher, and am sitting back here with my coffee. I scooped the boxes.
  • Out to lunch/dinner
  • On to Target, maybe Lowes
And that's pretty much it.
Happy Birthday to Rick!! :bday:
Winchester Winchester and Tobermory Tobermory Thanks, but I just told the truth. I found out the name of a person in the building who does drive people around. I was hoping to leave a VM message, but she answered the phone. She had already tried this person. The driver does not drive into Boston. I think I am the only one who drives into Boston!!
Then, I just told her the truth: That I have too many things going on with me, the cat, things I am involved with in the building, and my own medical care; and that I had 5 VM messages and 4 phone calls when I came home. I am very busy..
She got the message!!! She does have "The Ride" (low cost transportation for handicapped people) but is just afraid of getting stuck and not having a ride... She has HEARD of horror stories---people being stranded!! I knew there was something more to the story!!
I told her that an Uber should cost her about $35 or so.... She asked how would get that. I told her should could download the app to her phone.... Nope, she is not going to do that.... so... That is that.. She will not ask me again.
Today:
*regular morning stuff
*phone calls--important business ones
* Geoffrey--cuddle and play time
* need to find someone in the office who can fax a few documents for me.
* need to change bed linens and Geoffrey's towels
* I desperately need to go grocery shopping. Running low on some daily things. It is going to be a rainy day. I dislike going shopping in the rain... getting groceries wet, and stuff.
Geoffrey is still a bit upset from yesterday's Vet visit.
When he came home, all he did was pace, cry, and want me...
While I was stretched out on the recliner, he wanted to cuddle next to me, on the foot rest. He has only done that a couple of times.. when upset, or sick.
During the night, he actually came under the covers with me, in bed... poor thing.. so anxious.
Not eating much... nibbling, walking round, crying for me, but not wanting me. he does not know what he wants... He wants Mama, but is still afraid...
Happy Birthday Rick, hope you enjoyed your day!
I've been absent (again), just too tired to count three things!
Perhaps there were simply too many things going on.
The most important:
  1. Final three days of training. I now have my certificate and am a fully-fledged volunteer with the local hospice group.
  2. First group meeting, where we discuss our experiences and problems with the experts and light candles for any patients who have died
  3. Second meeting with "my" patient, living in a senior residence. Her children rarely visit as they all seem to live a long way away. I have not yet met them. I did speak to a daughter on the phone and we plan to meet when she is next in the area.
    I cannot believe that I spent 2 hours talking to the dement, but rather charming woman. The time simply flew by while she played with a slice of apricot tart, cutting it up with her fork, balancing a mouthful on a spoon and then tipping it back onto the plate. She kept asking me if my cats ate cake and I presume she was cutting it up for them to eat. She ate nothing!
    Well, once more I was surprised at how much patience I had - but it is important for me not to have pressing engagements at the back of my mind. If I had to get home to fix dinner or had another meeting, I would certainly not be able to just relax and take things as they come. It was a pleasant afternoon.
I am suddenly suffering from back-problems - and have started wearing the orthopaedic corset I was prescribed about 3 years ago to wear when doing heavy work in the garden. Of course, I never wore it - and now I am suffering! My own fault - but it was very painful today, trying to put clean sheets etc on the bed after one of my cats deposited large wet hairballs which almost soaked through to the mattress! Tomorrow will be better, nothing planned - just the weekly shopping trip!
Had a great time at dinner yesterday with my brother and SIL. My brother told them that it was Rick's birthday, so he got a free bowl of ice cream; he did NOT want the birthday song and threatened my brother with everything under the sun. So when they gave him his ice cream, the three of us sang Happy Birthday to Rick. He wanted to slide under the table, but he did well. :lol: And he thanks you, gilmargl gilmargl , for the birthday wishes!
Nothing much going on today. Rick has his bowling banquet tonight, so there's another night of not having to cook dinner.
  • Take the seedlings outside to the WeDeck for the afternoon.
  • Work outside
  • Turn the couch into a bed in the WeShed. Time for "vacation" again. This morning, we were in bed, listening to Amber scream. Molli went after Muffin and they both started yelling. Rick said, "Dear? It's time for vacation again." Ok, then. When we sleep in the WeShed, we put Muffin in the bedroom and keep Molli out with the other cats, so they're separated.
Saw a hummingbird this morning, checking out the thistle feeder which has been hanging where the hummingbird feeder was last year. So this morning before I even had my coffee I mixed up sugar solution (1/4 cup white sugar, 1 cup tepid water and stir, stir, stir until the sugar is all dissolved.) Put it out but now need to figure out how / where to hang the thistle feeder for the goldfinches and house finches. The other three feeders - two for mixed seed and one for peanut pieces - are on a different support. Oy! Oh well. The birds are well fed and the cats are entertained.
Also this morning before coffee the four aspidistra were brought downstairs from the bathroom and the shelf under the closet window. It's going to be a major project - they all have some small white dot-like insect pests on their leaves. Not scale, not mealy bug, just some pest to complicate my life. So today I will - outdoors - wipe the leaves down with insectidal soap. Unpot. Repot with fresh soil and systemic insecticide mixed in. And keep outside for the summer. Today is supposed to be quite warm and they will be is a sheltered location.
Himself will be splitting firewood this morning, starting on next winter's wood supply. Slow and steady does it, when you get to our age.
And if I have the energy I will start putting up greenhouse shade cloth. If not today, tomorrow when it start to pour.
