I'm reading Ocean Prey - John Sanford, one of my favorite authors, on my iPad.
I just finished it! Virgil Flowers has a real star turn, but there’s a shocker in there, too. I think Sandford’s books are consistently good unlike some other authors whose books begin to suffer after they’ve cranked out so many.

I interviewed an 86-year-old woman who weaves 3’ x 6’ mats for homeless people. She makes them out of used plastic grocery bags and the plastic bags newspaper are delivered in, and uses a kind of wooden…loom I guess you’d call it, that someone made for her. They’re virtually indestructible, are water proof, and can be hosed down or tossed in a washing machine when they get dirty. They provide a bit of insulation and cushioning. Her church distributes them through one of the local social service agencies. Anyway, I plan to write the article today.

Also on my list is to make some caramel, which can be kind of hit or miss for me. I’ve burned a lot of sugar! But my husband likes to put it on brownies. (Like brownies need any more sugar! )

Walked 2 1/2 miles this morning. Saw a jack rabbit, two California quail, two turkeys, four geese, and numerous ducks. Oh, and lots of people walking their dogs. :)

This morning I started moving rather large potted plants out of greenhouse and basement. It could be warmer - only 55.9 degrees Fahrenheit on the house roof, which is where my weather station is. But it is overcast, and that's better for the plants to adapt. So I got the brugmansia and large, shallow pot of purple oxalis out. Went to basement to haul out the mirabilis that I've had forever. Definitely time to move as three pale little shoots were starting out of the soil which hasn't been watered since it came indoors last November.

And as I'm pulling / pushing the hand truck with the heavy pot, there against the retaining wall was the goldfinch I saw yesterday, when it was hopping into some nearby undergrowth. Walked over and just scooped it up. Eyes bright, feathers smooth, maybe something amiss with one leg.

Came inside, searching for something in which to confine it. Settled on a plastic clam shell from 4 pounds of grapes - suitable size and ample holes for air. Lined it with a paper towel, popped bird inside, covered with a towel and set in the garage.

Called the nearby wildlife rehab place. Their recorded message said "if calling about bird, press 2." Got a recording referring me onward to two other places, neither exactly nearby. Called both. Recordings. Neither helpful.

Called a friend across the river in Pennsylvania who likes and is knowledgeable about birds. She suggested a rescue place in PA. Which I duly called and spoke to an actual person! Yes, bring them the goldfinch. Drove to my friend's house, she drove me and bird to AARK, where I handed the bird over on their veranda. Gave them a donation. And as we were leaving three more cars drove in, people got out holding cardboard boxes. Busy season.

So today

I) moved 4 larges pots of plants outdoors
2) rescued a goldfinch and brought it to a rescue facility
3) got a glimpse of my friend's two relatively new rescue cats. Female is very skinny / bone-y. I think it is older than they told her.

and came home.

Tobermory Tobermory I really like Sanford. Not finished with Ocean Prey yet. I'm trying to savor it. It's really good!

Man, talk about a rainy weekend. We've certainly had more than our share. It's just depressing outside. Muffin has still had her walks, but they are a shorter than they used to be. It's downright chilly. We covered plants in the garden on Friday and Saturday nights with old flannel sheets. But we didn't get all the way down to freezing, maybe the mid-to-upper 30s. Still cold.

I took an apple pie out of the freezer on Saturday for our dessert. It was the apple-cranberry pie with the oatmeal-pecan topping. Oh my heavens, it is excellent! Rick is not fond of cranberries, but he even said it was good. The sugar helps to combat the tartness of the cranberries in the pie. It is seriously decadent. And it will be made again! It's a recipe from the Pie Academy cookbook I bought last year when we were buying apples. The only thing missing was a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We have one apple pie left in the freezer from the pies I made last November.
  • Rick is at the hospital for some kind of procedure that's not as invasive as an endoscopy. He told me I didn't have to go along as he's not going under anesthesia. I can't go into the hospital (Covid), so would have to stay in the car for two hours. He said it wasn't necessary. So now I just worry from home. :sigh:
  • Just finished scooping and ready for my shower.
  • Just a quick vacuum and swiffer today. Nothing big.

Thanks. It was just the barium procedure. He really didn't find much out. And he's not particularly amused. He'll probably have to have the endoscopy. Thank you. :hugs:

regular stuff

Kaylee is back. wash quilt that I pilled tea on.

Finally the rain has stopped, you're right, Pam, it was very depressing! Connie came this morning after not being here
for 2 days. I was worried but he was waiting for me when I got up, angel. One of the gray tabbies that slept in the box-bed
I made for the winter came as well. Haven't seen him in a long time and he was skittish.

Pooped this morning. All I did was toss and turn all night last night. And just as I finally fell asleep, around 4:30, Amber started yelling. At 5:30, I gave in and gave the girls their breakfast. Now it's all I can do to stay awake. I'm making the bed up in the WeShed for tonight. Rick said he'll join me. Enough is enough.

Mia6 Mia6 Rick is fine, thank you! :hugs: As far as he knows, they didn't find anything, so he'll have to have the endoscopy.
  • Breakfast for the girls, emptied the dishwasher, and I'm on my second cup of coffee. I just made a carafe this morning. I'm going to need it.
  • Three loads of laundry.
  • We're hitting Target as soon as Rick gets out of bed, followed by a grocery run. If I have time this morning, I'll make Rick's milk pie (need whole milk for it, hence the grocery run).
  • Need to get Evelyn's Kindle ready as we're going to visit with her this afternoon. If I do get the pie made, we'll take a hunk to her.

Yup, me too! With two elderly constipated cats, that’s right where my mind goes!
How are your girls? My Vincie girl used to get constipated in her later years.Bacon would help.
Winchester Winchester Have you pooped this morning? hee, hee. I'm glad Rick is ok. How was your night
in the shed?
artiemom artiemom How are you and darling Geoffrey?

regular stuff

Make a list for Kaylee. She had car trouble yesterday so she needs to catch up on things because she was only here for 1.5 hours.
I put more bedding in the washer, will partially dry it outside as it's supposed to be sunny and in the 60s.

Mia6 Mia6 I am ok.... a bit down, but ok...
I found, what I think is a small rodent ulcer on Geoffrey... ugh..
I was giving him laxatone, and saw this abrasion(?) just to the left of midline, on the underside of his upper lip... Right next to where the split is...
I was in shock when I saw it.. I did not see it on Sunday.. It kind of looks like a blood blister...

Since he is such a 'face rubber', I was wondering if it could be an abrasion. I saw where he wore out the tope of a wicker basket... so...

After researching and worrying all day, I decided to make an appointment with the regular Vet for him. The problem is, his old eregulargar vet left the practice. To see the Vet whom I was referred to, it is a couple weeks wait.. I can see a different vet much sooner, but.....

I decided to take the Appointment with Dr F.... on May 27... this way, I can watch the area (and worry).....
I also emailed the specialist... just in case...

So we are covered for appointments...
Geoffrey is not acting as if anything is bothering him... but with all the changes in his food, It is no wonder he would have a reaction of some type... dm...

Today:
*regular morning stuff
* Go get another Covid test, they are offering, I am taking..
* Get some gas for car---ugh, if I can find some.. just topping off tank--as I usually do.
* not much else..

Yesterday was a clean out of all water things: the Keurig machine, the Brita Pitcher, the Water Kettle. All were scrubbed, new filters.. did the vinegar cleaning a couple of times with the Keurig machine..
I also went for a walk, inside the building. It was much too windy and chilly to walk.

I need money!! OMG... I made an appointment for dental crown.. it is desperately needed if I want to save the tooth.. so expensive.. and now with Geoffrey and the RU... ugh...

I want to go out to visit stores, but I cannot buy anything.. I will get more upset if I walk around them and do not buy what I like/really need.... just making do for now... Venting...

Well, I do have insurance on Geoffrey.. Just means his premium will increase next year.. Trying to find the good side of things.. depressing, but... have to find the good points..
The crown can go towards my rent for next year... so.... trying positives..

Winchester Winchester I hope you and Rick had a good nights sleep in the WeShed...

Sorry guys!! :paperbag: :paperbag: :paperbag: :paperbag: :paperbag: Me bad. Looking back and reading it....yeah, I'm a idiot (although I probably did poop at some point!) You're right, that would be the first thing we'd think of. I remember when Bob was having trouble getting Jasper to poop, he finally texted me and said, "Poop!" And I cheered for him! Yay, poop!

Spent the night out in the WeShed. Fell asleep around 11 and slept straight through until 8:30. Didn't even wake up once. I was exhausted (pooped?) and it felt good to be able to just sleep. Rick stayed in the house with the girls. Most of the time, he sleeps through all the yelling that Amber does in the morning. Sometimes, though, it's so bad that he even needs a night in the shed. As leery as I am about sleeping alone in the dark (I'd never, ever be able to do that in the house), in the shed, I can drop off almost instantly.

We took the Kindle up and visited with Rick's mom yesterday. She needs surgery to replace the battery in her pacemaker; they haven't set a time yet. It was a nice visit with her. She's really enjoying listening to her books. The aides think she's amazing with all the books she goes through. I should make a list; she'd put me to shame.
  • Not much planned for today. I'll need to scoop boxes this morning.
  • Muffin and I were already out for her walk. I took her out while making my coffee. It's really breezy, but it might actually get a little warm today. We've been down into the 30s at night.
  • Need to transplant the lily in the WeShed.

I saw a hummingbird the other day. So this afternoon I took down the suet feeder, made up hummingbird sugar+water and put their feeder up. Wasn't more than a couple of hours that I saw a hummingbird at it. Yes!

Mowed the front lawn, took the clippings down and dumped them in the compost heap. Thin layer of greens, but will help the browns (autumn leaves) decompose quicker/better.

Did some weeding. There's always "some weeding" to do at this time of year.

Also put laundry away, emptied dishwasher, put some things on Freecycle that will be picked up tomorrow - typical day.

I mowed the yard yesterday and planted 12 sweet potato plants. (9 Beauregard and 3 Diane).
  • Breakfast for the girls, emptied the dishwasher, and am drinking my coffee.
  • We're doing a run today. There's a place in the Pocono area, Holley Ross, that sells seconds on Fiesta and on Polish Pottery. I'm looking for 8 or 9-inch Fiesta square dishes. Holley Ross Pottery | Dinnerware Glassware Stoneware Gardenware | Polish Pottery On the way back, we're stopping at several nurseries that we've been wanting to check out. We keep hearing about them on TV during our local news and have been wanting to visit them for a couple years now. Last year was a no-go for everything. It should be a nice day.
And depending on what time we get home, that will be it.

Having really bad allergy days.... Last night, my eyelids were so itchy; I had to wash my face immediately before I jumped into bed..
Put the AC on... to clea the air... Air purifier on high...
I woke up ok, but now that I shut down the AC and opened the windows, I am congested, sneezing, teary and itchy eyes,... ugh.. miserable

Today:
*regular morning stuff
*Have a zoom appointment at 10 am
*was planning on going to Mass at noon
* Was planning on a walk today.. It is gorgeous outside.. I wonder if wearing a mask would help the allergies?
* I need to go organize some paperwork... but.. if I am feeling horribly, I do not think I will be doing it.... Allergies also cause a fuzzy brain... think of a sinus/head cold.... ugh..
***May put AC on... ugh...

I have a love/hate relationship this time of year..

Mia6 Mia6 a rodent ulcer is what looks like an inflamed area of skin. It is also called a granulomatous complex... There are several sub sections of it. It can look like a cyst or an abscess...

I am not certain what this is.. I started a thread on it... ....

Not much today...
*Regular stuff
*meeting this morning---unexpected... I really wanted to do nothing...
