My Male Cat Licks/sniffs Other Male's Butt Region

They are both males and during play, the one cat will stick his face into the other cat's butt region and sniff intently, possibly licking it? They never reverse roles on that, btw. He'll also be a bit too interested at other times, like if they pass in the hall. What is that about??
Edit: this goes on for like a minute at a time too. It's not just a quick whiff.

perfectly normal, my cats sniffs each other butts sometimes and will even try to clean it, this only lasts a few seconds before the cat that being sniff walks away

Mine sometimes clean each other's butts at the same time. Intensely. It's a little awkward...I feel like I'm intruding on something.

My younger male cat sniffs & licks the other male’s booty during play. I freak out and say “N a s t y!” or think maybe they are gay. So, good to know it’s just a form of bonding.
