Agreed N NY cat man
True! One generation falls away but the new ones we have poured our love and knowledge into will remember. Hopefully continue our paths. That’s exactly why we do “Bloody well” need to make sure they know of our love, appreciation and have the benefit of any knowledge or wisdom we can share. The best thing we remaining folks can do besides that is to draw close to each other. SO..... Here I am folks! Just so you all know, Love you all!

She was very wise and as loyal as they come. She shared all she knew about nature, animals and history. When I started having the problems around the property she was ready to enlist her entire family to keep an eye on me and the kitties I was bringing in. She was the only one willing to fight along side me to save them and she was already in her eighties. Lol Of course I wouldn’t let her get too deeply involved but knowing she was willing to put everything on the line to help me meant the world to me. She was a rare bird. I always thought it was really amazing that even though we had lived very different lives and in a different time, we were completely in sync about the things that count. She called me her little sister. It was the highest honor she could ever have given me. She left me with many wonderful things, especially that sly smile. My loss is huge but the benefits of having known her far outweigh the loss. I am holding that close to my heart. That’s what she would want.
For all of you who have suffered losses too, my heart is with you. I’m very glad we have each other. We may not be talking on the phone but we are together every day. I am most grateful for that. Thank you. :grouphug::heartshape:Sending giant
Ahh, Jcatbird, I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. She sounds like a rare gem, ones that aren't easy to find. I have one of those, and I don't know what I would do without her. I got some bad news today (nothing serious) but it upset me, and I called her just to hear her voice. She immediately dropped everything and drove over with lunch and spent her afternoon with me. Who DOES that? Those rare gems, that's who. I feel your loss, friend, and my heart goes out toward you. I'm giving you a huge hug right now.. :hugs:

Furballsmom Furballsmom Thank you. The heart is all the emoticon we really need. I love the others too though! Lol

Buffster7 Buffster7 Thank you. I’m glad you have someone to call on. Especially right now. You are a very busy person. I hope whatever you called her about turned out okay. Miss R couldn’t really dash over here at her age but , as you know, sometimes it’s just having that other “voice on the phone” that gets us over the hump. I know I will reach for the phone at times. It was months before I stopped going in to check on Sarah. It’s not the first time I have lost a part of my heart and it won’t be the last but we learn to keep going. We patch the heart with new meetings. We are built of all the combined lifetime meetings and events so each one becomes a permanent part of us and in a like manner, we give a part of ourselves as we go. Her family was kind enough to tell me of a few things I did that brought something to Miss R. They have asked me to write about my memories of her and the stories she told me. I will. Her stories were amazing and should be shared. For those who have not heard them, they will continue to provide knowledge and understanding of many things as well as laughter. It’s always great to revisit the laughter. I won’t find another Miss R but who knows what lies around the next corner? Kitten steps. :catman:

Okay! On to some smiles! The cats of Chez Catbird demand some laughter!

I’ll start with a photo from the garden. One of my most favorite of all garden plants, the tea olive or Osmanthus fragrant. This is the Japanese version which blooms with brilliant orange flowers for the season. I just wish I could send the scent! Oh man! The most wonderful smell! It carries a The way across two acres but is not overpowering. It draws you across the yard to search out the source.

Here is my Baby Su
Pretty tuxedo kitty! For some reason, I don't remember seeing her before. :headscratch:

with a nod to the season
That's the perfect picture. You keep your yard so nice. :camera:

M&M candy. Hard outer shell but all sugar inside. She would give me a sly smile and respond ,” yeah but not a nut inside!”
I don't like the ones with nuts inside either. ;)

The world is better if we all look out for each other while we are here.
Beautiful thought. 👍

we learn to keep going. We patch the heart
Yeah, just gotta patch it up and keep trying. :bluebutterfly::purplebutterfly::bluedragonfly::reddragonfly:

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 Thank you. I do know. Her family knows how much we cherished each other and I was on the phone with them until the wee hours this morning. I was told that one of her daughters gave her a hug and said it was from me. She also told her to go and find Sarah. I hope she can. In return, I will try to be supportive of the children she leaves behind. The world is better if we all look out for each other while we are here. You never know when some small thing will make a difference somewhere. I’ll never look at M&M’s the same way again. ☺
It's so incredibly sad that as many times as we say these things to people, a lot of us (all of us?) think it doesn't apply to us and then find out it does. So many people (and members of other species) never have any love at all in their lives. It's the one true thing that money can't buy, and it's the most precious thing of all.

The stories, and the memories, are precious! I was looking through a couple of boxes of cards for some things yesterday, and of course I looked at other cards and read the messages, too. A lot of people gone! but it made me very happy thinking of them and reading their thoughts.

The soul is eternal. We all go on.

Chopin's "Raindrop" Prelude was playing while I was reading of your storm there and seeing wet cats.

My parents' gardener for many years, and then mine, was Japanese and I asked him to put in some plants for me. He asked about one tree and I asked him to put one in the front yard. Unfortunately it didn't "take" but it was what he translated into English as a "smell-flower tree" -- a pittosporum. It must be in the same family as your orange blossomed tree. Its flowers are yellow and white, and the same size and shape as yours.

M maggiedemi Thankbyou and the patches are placed.
That is a beautiful tucked and yard!

tarasgirl06 tarasgirl06 I revisit the written notes at times too. The written word carries the sentiment and can be tucked away. It’s an art form and a tangible reminder.

That’s neat that “Raindrops” was playing to the wet cats. There should be a “Wet Cat” symphony. I can imagine the sounds.

Do you like “Carnival of the Animals?” I love that. It paints great pictures in my mind. The March of the lions! The Aquarium!

Today is BJ day. Although I had been trying earlier, back in September of last year I started focusing on convincing BJ to come in. He was the last cat out. My original goal had been that no cat would be left behind. Starting with well over a hundred kitties that goal seemed unreachable. I was often exhausted and discouraged but I had watched BJ protect and defend all the kitties of his colony. BJ seemed more inclined to eat me than to become friends but he had brought the last two Mom cats and their litters right to me. I felt that he understood now that I was working with him to protect the kitties instead of being one of the threats that they faced. I worked with him twice a day to try and gain his trust but no amount of food or treats could catch him. I caught buzzards in the trap but no BJ. Lol It was time to just sit with him in the woods. The swarms of mosquitos tried to drain me but I just couldn’t leave this beautiful boy behind. I continued to hope.
kittychick kittychick You might find a smile here.
This is the story of BJ.

He brought his last wife and babies out of the swamp and to the cat shelter at my back door.

2B63FAB9-A050-493A-B3A0-6E068BD96E86.jpeg

This was Flowers. My first good look at her babies came as they played in some old flower pots. Lol

6B9E3480-19BB-40B9-A97C-935EC49C25FE.jpeg

BJ left them in my care and returned to the swamp.
B09D912A-F715-45B5-B401-B55493AFAF95.jpeg

I started feeding him there.
98D29170-C103-4497-84EA-C645E03AE554.jpeg

He looked at me as though he might eat me! Lol
9CA90299-F1CD-49B8-A9FC-5D73678D66FF.jpeg

Flowers began to accept me and I carried her scent with me to try and lure BJ.
EC8A9D7E-3C70-42A3-8C49-0F2D6A95329D.jpeg

Although he allowed me closer he flinched away if I got too close.
361561E5-C1CF-41CD-99A5-E29CE8AAC954.jpeg

He often tried to ignore me.
20863B18-EF08-4372-B407-E64EF59FAA9C.jpeg

I began placing treats on my lap as I laid in the woods.
44EB3FB3-2F09-4C47-8AB3-F5A95473A0F6.jpeg

He still pretende to ignore me. I knew he was watching though! Lol
267C68ED-B217-45AE-97B1-D4EA967D30D2.jpeg

I kept working to get close to him but....
0366558A-FCA2-4058-B749-602E42C71592.jpeg

A swat usually made me withdraw a little ways.
7B5CF896-014C-463F-941C-82BE3F36B26E.jpeg

BJ used his favorite Sweet Gum tree as his safe barrier.

This was his favorite meeting place.
34842814-B88C-40E2-A37C-CBB18FBCD49B.jpeg

He began to wait there for me at feeding time.
853CC063-4496-41F5-93B6-DC97BA9FBB2B.jpeg

As the days passed I continued to work to get him to eat from my hand.
E6D6483E-1824-4841-AFCC-EA0CD75E744C.jpeg

At times he seemed really lonely for the other kitties.
0B24FC79-D6F4-4916-A441-DE225896D8BC.jpeg

Eating me still seemed an option.
99599708-01EE-4D5B-AD54-88C75DEA890F.jpeg

He still declined my pleas to come with me.....
6A7EF11B-1F59-4509-8770-C1CFED6F9A18.jpeg

But he did start to come out of the edge of the swamp.
22FA7D47-063A-4994-A27A-2144D70847CA.jpeg

He studied me.
AA134366-7A92-4956-8B02-DF8EEB287FBF.jpeg

Eventually he accepted me.
2E2A4DD4-A930-44ED-8550-54F5FA520595.jpeg

Then on Oct. 20th I became very concerned about his safety and I pleaded with him to follow me. He did.
He sat and stared at my open back door. I placed food there and called to him. He sat there. A Raccoon and an opossum stood between him and the woods now. He stared at me so I sat down and turned my back to him as I posted here on the site.
“He is right outside!”
DE4D85C5-0F23-4B30-B526-B6E68E2914DB.jpeg

Then it happened. He came in and started eating as I sat there beside him. I reached behind me and slammed the door shut.
That’s when it dawned on me that I had just shut myself in with a very feral Tom. Oops!
E385B2F5-D265-46C3-92F5-F8807F442159.jpeg

He was nervous and paced the room but he didn’t eat me!
E8A53145-F4AB-4E60-B781-88E007BCCBC6.jpeg

He looked for a way out.
8B3F7C21-001F-4987-B0BA-3992E919CB43.jpeg

I spent that night in the room with him and survived without a scratch. In fact, he got in the bed at some point and marked me as his!
D5D9B085-CC43-426B-8CBC-9081B0EE7CDF.jpeg

There were days that followed where he made me nervous but I also came to understand that he was actually alerting me to activity outside.
42234105-471F-4146-99EF-7FF826146FA3.jpeg

He would come to the window into the living room and call me.
F66D748C-4925-4D2D-998D-A498284320C1.jpeg

He became my guard cat.
6F3DB478-A05A-4579-9625-04D52D018FF5.jpeg

He began to show his purrsonality. Hide and seek was a good game!
9E8A9120-88B8-406A-9358-0D279B03E743.jpeg

Hi human!

He kept guard each night.

After his vet check and being neutered I brought him into the main part of the house with the other cats. Flowers went to him immediately. They remembered each other.
23866543-B2E7-4215-B22E-B316A6365958.jpeg

That calmed him and I opened the door to start trying to pet him.

As he allowed it, I brought him to the cage door for petting.

He began to enjoy petting.

As I sat on the floor with him he began to show me affection.
5A6729F4-4488-48C5-85B1-213B5969D89C.jpeg

This is the first time I lifted him up. Lol He wasn’t too sure he liked that. It took practice.
963E430B-1A81-4411-8EDE-8A1EC9D28EF7.jpeg

Lifting just to my lap worked. He liked that.
F06238E4-BBCC-452E-B9D6-BBFDBA343923.jpeg

Then he allowed snuggling.
90FB22DB-C8F4-4574-BACF-9D151DCB752E.jpeg

He made the decision to lay at the edge of my lap on his own.

I thought he still might eat me but this turned out to be a love nip.

He started allowing more and more contact.

He began initiating contact!

I think I like inside and.....

I’m going to be a lap cat now! The sofa is mine.

Hope can make , seemingly unobtainable, dreams come true.

Thank you to everyone here for supporting my hopes and dreams and for being here at the moment I realized I had shut myself in with an enraged feral.:flail:(turned teddy bear)
As well as all the other trying times. :kitty:
Have a great night and a smile courtesy of me and BJ. :heartshape:

What a beautiful summary of BJ's transition from feral to teddy bear. :redheartpump:

It's simply amazing what you've done for all those cats! :redheartpump: You, and everyone else who cares for/TNRs/socializes/rehomes ferals are truly wonderful people! :redheartpump: Or as you wrote in your very first post "If you are a cat guardian you're a kitty hero!" :redheartpump:

Thanks again! :redheartpump: And Happy Anniversary BJ !!! :redheartpump:

Furballsmom Furballsmom I know! He had his winter fat then and he has gained a bit now in the tummy. Lol Thank goodness I got him out of the mosquitoes though. The heart worms had already gotten him. It would have gotten worse.

N NY cat man He did get a few skin samples. Lol Once he came in though he decided that eating me might leave him without kitty treats. :flail:Besides, I’m not that tasty.

At times he seemed really lonely for the other kitties.
View attachment 304403
Eating me still seemed an option.
View attachment 304404
He still declined my pleas to come with me.....
View attachment 304405
But he did start to come out of the edge of the swamp.
View attachment 304406
He studied me.
View attachment 304407
Eventually he accepted me.
View attachment 304408
Then on Oct. 20th I became very concerned about his safety and I pleaded with him to follow me. He did.
He sat and stared at my open back door. I placed food there and called to him. He sat there. A Raccoon and an opossum stood between him and the woods now. He stared at me so I sat down and turned my back to him as I posted here on the site.
“He is right outside!”

Then it happened. He came in and started eating as I sat there beside him. I reached behind me and slammed the door shut.
That’s when it dawned on me that I had just shut myself in with a very feral Tom. Oops!
View attachment 304410
He was nervous and paced the room but he didn’t eat me!
View attachment 304411
He looked for a way out.
View attachment 304412
I spent that night in the room with him and survived without a scratch. In fact, he got in the bed at some point and marked me as his!
View attachment 304413
There were days that followed where he made me nervous but I also came to understand that he was actually alerting me to activity outside.
View attachment 304414
He would come to the window into the living room and call me.
View attachment 304415
He became my guard cat.
View attachment 304416
He began to show his purrsonality. Hide and seek was a good game!
View attachment 304417
Hi human!
View attachment 304418
He kept guard each night.
View attachment 304419
I started trying to pet him by using a hairbrush.
View attachment 304420
Then progressed to my gloved hand.
View attachment 304421
Toys? Can I eat it?
View attachment 304422
His impression of a toy bird is pretty obvious! :flail:
View attachment 304423
After his vet check and being neutered I brought him into the main part of the house with the other cats. Flowers went to him immediately. They remembered each other.
View attachment 304424
That calmed him and I opened the door to start trying to pet him.
View attachment 304425
As he allowed it, I brought him to the cage door for petting.
View attachment 304426
He began to enjoy petting.
View attachment 304427
As I sat on the floor with him he began to show me affection.
View attachment 304428
This is the first time I lifted him up. Lol He wasn’t too sure he liked that. It took practice.
View attachment 304429
Lifting just to my lap worked. He liked that.
View attachment 304430
Then he allowed snuggling.
View attachment 304431
He made the decision to lay at the edge of my lap on his own.
View attachment 304432
I thought he still might eat me but this turned out to be a love nip.
View attachment 304433
He started allowing more and more contact.
View attachment 304434
He began initiating contact!
View attachment 304435
Then I allowed him the run of the house. So this is the sofa?
View attachment 304436
Hey human..... did you know there’s other cats in here?
View attachment 304443
Yikes! I trust you BJ! Turned out to be a kiss on my face!
View attachment 304437
Another of the girls he had guarded many months before was reintroduced to him. Although it had been many , many months, they were fine together.
View attachment 304438
One day BJ made a choice.
View attachment 304439
I think I like inside and.....
View attachment 304441
I’m going to be a lap cat now! The sofa is mine.
View attachment 304442
And so it is!
View attachment 304446
Bj and Flowers, as well as the other family members are now safe. View attachment 304447

BJ sounds like he has more than a bit of Mason in him :redheartpump: :angelcat::redheartpump:and, cats being love made manifest, it's not surprising that after he made sure he could trust, he decided to enjoy the kind of love and life every cat deserves :catrub::redheartpump: Happy, happy anniversary, BJ! and family!
And yes, I love "Carnival of the Animals," too!

I wasn't here over the weekend, so I have to backtrack a wee bit, and quote an old Navy friend..."Fair winds and following seas, Ms. R, fair winds and following seas.

What fun to look back a BJ's journey! Hard to believe he is the same cat. WHAT a difference being "someone's cat" made to him!
