Hi everyone

This question is about my cat’s fur. It’s very soft to the touch, but it is separated like this (see picture). I’ve seen mixed opinions online—some say that is a sign of healthy cat and the cat is well taken care off. Others suggest it might mean the cat isn’t grooming herself well, possibly due to feeling unwell.

Has anyone else experienced this with their cat’s fur? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thank you!

Hi. I am not sure I ever heard that hair separating like that is a sign of good health, but I am not sure it is a definitive sign of poor health either. My cat had soft hair like a rabbit, so maybe that plays into it separating, although I have no idea if that is true. Her hair separated like that, long before she acquired illnesses, so I don't think it can always be contributed to health issues. She was not a very thorough groomer though. I brushed and that helped somewhat.

Tbh, we ended up brushing her daily once she became sick, and I never saw the hair separation again. So, for her it seemed that daily brushings were the answer. In her case, it must have helped to keep the natural oils spread throughout her hair.

I am sure that as more members see your posts, you will receive varying responses.

how old is your cat? I've seen this in senior cats who don't groom as much as they used to.

As Feebysowner said, maybe daily brushing will help?

I can honestly say I've never seen the hair on a cat separate like that before but she's positively adorable - love her facial expression.:lovecat2:
