My cat is squatting in the litter box and he's barely peeing.

Hey I would love some advice if anyone has dealt with this before. My older cat Leo has been going in the litter box all day and he's been squatting and only being like a dribble, I looked on line I thought it could be cystitis but he doesn't have the symptoms some I'm really stumped. I'm praying it's not serious because I can't afford a vet so this has me a a little stressed.

Usually a male cat straining to pee is an emergency. They can die pretty quickly from a blockage (the bladder actually ruptures). It is caused by crystals in the urine, which a vet can test for.

Cats may also strain frequently if they have a urinary tract infection, are diabetic (pee frequently), or have kidney disease (also pee more frequently).

I would definitely consider it an emergency. There may be a charity in the area that helps pay for emergency vet visits?

Emergency vet NOW! If he has a blockage, his life is on the line with not much time to spare. Do it. They can fix it and the cat can recover. I went through it once and it was scary but we got through it and the cat was fine.

Edit: Yes, it's expensive, I hear ya. Lots of places have payment plan options. Set up a GoFundMe or have a friend do it to help raise money. Max out the credit card and make payments as able (that's what I did). It's a bad situation to be in, but you can get through it and the ER vets know everyone is in this situation unless they're very ble$$ed.

Thank you I'll try the emergency vet
