Hi all,
I am new to this site and I wanted to post about my cat, Timmer. Right before Thanksgiving this year he started having loose bloody stool. Our vet immediately did blood work and put him on Prednisolone and an antibiotic. Unfortunatley, neither worked for long, and on Christmas eve I had him at the emergency clinic because he couldn't poop. He was straining so hard he fell over and was having spasms in his gut. The clinic gave him an enema, fluids, pain meds, and sent us home. Christmas day he only let the enema water out and no poop. The next day I took him to our regular vet. They sedated him and manually worked out the poop. Two days later I had him back at the Emergency Clinic and he saw their GI specialist. Timmer had an untrasound and colonoscopy with a biopsy. He basically has IBD/Crohn's/colitis. He is on 5 mg. Pred. per day and I just started the Leukeran this week. He gets .5 ml every 72 hours, made up at the Diamondback pharmacy as a compound liquid.
In my opinion, he's not doing so well. Good days and bad. Strains a lot, the stool that comes out is like a twig it's so thin. His colon is nearly swollen shut, I think, with inflammation. The GI tells me just realize when he goes to the box and strains, it's not always that he has to go, but he FEELS like he has to go, because of the inflammation.
So, ....what are your experiences with IBD, Leukeran? How long did it take for the Leukeran to work?
Listen, I love that cat to the moon and back; I cried when I had to give him the chemo and I have to do it again tonight. The thought of giving him something I wouldn't want to take, makes me sick. He is my cat and I love him -- he's not a science experiment. I know he is uncomfortable a lot of times. I can tell. The GI tells me the Leukeran could take 2 weeks to work. I'm also giving him 1/4 teasp. Miralax a day and again 5 mg. Pred. Sometimes he does go poop and it's diarrhea. I'd rather see that than the stick-like stools he strains to push out.
I feel so bad for him and this is so stressful on me. I worry.
His attitude is still good and he eats like a champ, drinks water, pees. He even played today. I was expecting dreadful side effects from the Leukeran and the only thing I noticed was about two hours after I gave it to him, he became very still and slept alone that night. Next day he was fine.
I'm just really scared about this and so frustrated.
GI doc told me feed him whatever he wants to eat but told me stay away from the grain free, that the extra protein would be too hard on his digestion.
Any input is welcome.
Thanks.

thank you Duckpond. I just don't know how long to let this go on for. He just got out of the litter box with his feet all covered in poop because he had a "blow out" with diarrhea. I just got him cleaned up. I just don't know if this is the best thing for him. I believe his IBD is pretty far advanced, as he's not responding to the Prednisolone at all. I don't even know why I still give it to him. I forgot to mention I give him a Vitamin B12 shot once a week. He does respond well to that.

i haven't had a cat with this problem. but my son has a cat with IBD, the only food the cat can eat without major diarrhea is fancy feast classics. i know many will say it is not a great food, but it has saved her, and they have tried everything as well. You might ask your vet if you could give it a try? my son feeds his cat two cans of fancy feast, classics only, per day, one in the morning and one in the evening. as long as they stick to this she is OK, but if she ever gets anything else the problems start back up. They feed the chicken, turkey, and beef, not so much of the fish flavors.

He hasn't been on the chemo very long, I would give it a chance to work. Unfortunately IBD is progressive and there are varying levels of the disease. I just let my IBD kitty go earlier today. He was stable and doing well on the Pred for 8 years. I know it is hard to see him so sick but give the medication a chance to work. The chemo may take down the inflammation and the Pred will keep it in check.

It's funny you mention Fancy Feast. I have always fed my cats on that. Even though it's not the best, my vet told me don't feel bad about feeding them that. Those foods have been around forever and are fine. That's very interesting about the Classic. My other cat will only eat Classic. Timmer likes the "grilled." Over the years I tried switching them to grain free but they both got diarrhea. Our vet told me grain free foods are a gimmick. Timmer loves some of the grain free foods but they say with IBD to try other proteins like duck or rabbit. He won't touch either one. At this point, I am giving him his Fancy Feast. The GI doc told me give him whatever he loves to eat.

Denice, i'm so sorry for your loss. Wow, you are a good cat mom. To keep your kitty going that long took a lot of love and patience. I just hate seeing Timmer in pain, pushing to get stool out that may or may not be there. I have no way of knowing without taking him into the clinic to be evaluated. He had some diarrhea this morning and got it all over his feet and I had to wash his feet and his butt for him. He's not eating right now, which might be from the chemo. Again, I don't know. That's what's frustrating is the not knowing how he is feeling or what is really going on.

Denice, and everyone else, I let my kitty Timmer go today. Things just went down hill very fast. I'm sitting here wondering what will I do without him? Everything I see in the house reminds me of him. He was my soulmate. When I was home he was constantly with me. I can still feel his soft fur on my lips when I kissed him goodbye. I just can't believe it. I'm devastated.

I am so sorry for your loss. You saved your Timmer from suffering, & have now passed that suffering onto yourself as you mourn over him. It is the final act of selfless, unconditional love that we can give our kitties, and you did that for Timmer. If you would like to, when you are ready, you could post a memorial to Timmer in the Crossing the Bridge forum.

Thank you Alzycat. I did post on the Crossing the Bridge forum.
Thanks for your support and kind words. It is so hard to go through this. My house feels so weird without him and especially knowing he isn't coming back. He was only away from me one night in 8 years and that was for treatment in the hospital. But I knew I would be picking him up. Now..... But I will pick up his ashes and he will join the other kitties who have passed away on my fireplace mantle.
Also when the vet shaved his leg to give him the stuff to stop his heart, I asked for the fur and he said of course and put it in a baggie for me. I have his soft fur to still touch! That makes me feel good.
I'm so glad I found this site for support. It really is very comforting.
