My 10 year old very large (overweight cat) 23 lbs and has asthma; started acting lethargic and I noticed his right fot was slipping as he walked 2 days ago. I took him to his vet who did xrays and a glucose test - which was 106. and in xrays said he could see the outline of lungs which he shouldn't and thought he saw a shadow near right side of lung. I then took him to a specialist to look for cardiomyopathy. They did an echocardiogram (came out ok) and an abdominal ultrasound and could not see anything. they then extracted roughly a liter of fluid and said he has ascites. They don't know why though. Suspect cancer. They sent me home with prednisone and lasix and basically said palliative care. they could go on and do a cat scan for another 1500..... My bill was 2,000 for yesterday. My cat is still not moving arounda nd I haven't seen him poo in 2 days. He is eating when I put it by him and today he drank alot. Any thoughts? DO you agree he probably has cancer - but all of a sudden in 2 days to go from ok to barely moving?

Hi. I really have nothing beneficial to offer, but wanted to ask if they thought the fluid was from the abdominal or chest cavity? Did they consider testing the fluid that they drained to see if that would shed light on anything? What other blood work did they do besides glucose? A complete blood work up would help to eliminate issues with his kidneys/liver, for example. Because of the shadow near the right side of his lung, are they suspecting lung cancer?

I don't know how severe his asthma is, but if not bad, given he isn't that old, I would go ahead and do the CT, if you can afford it. You might consider getting a copy of his records to share with another vet for a second opinion. Or, even ask your vet if it would help to have an internal medicine specialist or oncologist take a look at his records in a consultation capacity.

Wish I had more to suggest. I hope other members will come along and provide some input for you.

All I can say is I had an almost 12yrs old liking a week..male cat
He went down hill so fast it was unreal
Did an xray and he had a mass around his lungs..pneumonia...and he lost alot of weight
Now I took him to the vet constantly
And he went down hill..like almost overnight..he had to be euthanized cause his lungs were giving out...So YES. a cat can go down hill in the blink of an eye
