I will be moving with my 13 yr old cat to a different apartment, with a new roommate whom the cat was around for 10 days but isn't really comfortable with yet. The cat and I moved in February to the current apartment and must move out by the end of August. The problem is I may have a day or two with nowhere to go with the cat. I may have to move out on a Friday, but cannot move into the new place until Sunday. She is very timid with other people and has never been around another cat. I cannot imagine having her "stay" with someone else, much less someone else with another cat, or in some kitty hotel or shelter.

Any advice?

I was not able to follow this but when I had to go away for 10 days I left one of my cats at home because she is very emotional. My other 2 were boarded because they are bff.now home they are fine. I found help when posting on next door

Can you not stay in a pet friendly motel for the weekend- I had done that a couple of times because of construction, hurricane evacuation and I simply tell the desk I want no maid service because I have cats and do not want the door opened.....

There's alot of affordable pet friendly places where I live, you might want to look in your area....I'm sure your 13yr old is very attached to you so it would probably be best for her to be with you imo

I have stayed numerous times at Extended Stay motel chain with my last cat over there in the avatar. These suites tend to be more hands-off than full service hotels meaning you can leave your Do Not Disturb up (and sometimes they even have a Pet Inside door hanger) and they will stay out of the room. As a bonus, they have a mini-kitchen and a full fridge. Krista was a climber. She definitely appreciated the full fridge to get on top of because I would block the high spaces off from her at home. Her first job whenever we checked in was to find the highest spot she could get to. 🤦‍♂️ 😹

IMG_7127.jpeg I found this foldable kitty litter box easy to clean and to carry. Not fun to carry a kitty litter box into a hotel room, but this makes it a breeze. Then you just need a ziploc for the litter, a clean scooper and a couple of garbage bags. All of which can fit neatly in a good looking over sized shoulder bag.

Good news! The old management company says I can remain in the old apartment for a few days into September until I am fully moved in to the new place. Now I can rest easier.

I now plan on removing most of the boxes and furniture out of a bedroom, putting the cat in there as we clear out the rest of the apartment on moving day. Then she will be last to move to the new apartment. Any advice here to keep her sane during a stressful day for her?

For one day? Drugs. You can ask your vet for some gabapentin. Ask for a little more than you need so you can try a dry run before moving day. That day will be stressful enough without finding out for the first time how it affects her. Or you could try CBD. I would recommend either/or; not both together. You can try a dry run of CBD to see how that affects her too. Both are quite safe. But it's a good idea to not have any moving day surprises.

Could a friend or family member take her for a few hours? That way you can come and go as you need to without stressing her out or stressing out about her. Last time I moved, I dropped off Krista with a friend for a week. But Krista was the people-loving adventurous type and really didn't stress out that much.

Really good news .... so she shouldn't be stressed if you start clearing out that bedroom " now" and bring some of her things in there with her scent ,a little each day so by the time you move her into that room shell have her bed,a cat tree, litter box, food and water all in the room shes already familiar with and where she'll stay for the day..... then the last trip you make will be with her and her baggage

One day is not so bad hearing noise going on outside of the room...... if you can lock the door or tape a sign " CAT,do not open" so no one accidentally opens that door.....I remember when I moved I crated my pets inside " the last room" like your doing just because I was worried about the movers and I could rest easy.....then they stayed in the crates in the new place and everyone was gone

Being in the new place is probably more stressful because it's unfamiliar and they need to establish territory to be comfortable- be sure to get their scent on towels so you can mark the new place by rubbing it around base boards etc for him and even from articles of your clothing

Excellent advice all around, to which I would add that you keep a radio in the room with your cat and tune it to some soft music -- we love KUSC.org which is mainly Classical but there are several streams to chooose from, too -- to be "white noise" while the moving noises are occurring.

This was Krista's jam! I called it her "cat rock". She would sleep against the sound bar when I would play it for her during the days. I can't tell what Betty thinks of it. But she doesn't dislike it. On an in-patient vet stay for Krista, I left this on an iPod playing for her and I would drop off a new external USB battery and pick up the spent one so vet staff never needed the unlock codes. All they had to do was swap out the external battery. Anyway, one of the staff's dog had to stay overnight. I am told that dog is normally an anxious patient. But she got the cage underneath Krista. Apparently she also found the cat rock relaxing because the tech said she had never seen her dog so relaxed at the vet. So yeah. One cat and one dog give this their purrs and snores of approval. You can stream/download from Spotify or Apple Music.
