I was gonna post an advice thread but then moving day was upon me and I just had to remember what I'd read in other moving threads!

I moved from a studio to a cheaper one-bedroom a few blocks away. Fortunately little Amelia seems to have taken the move pretty well! She was a little scared at first, but she's eaten and has been exploring and playing for much of the evening, so I'd say she's doing well for her first day in the new apartment.

She still growls at sudden noises, like she did when I first got her, but I'm confident that will go away as she gets more comfortable. Overall, I guess she's still a little on edge, but doing fairly well. I think she'll adjust quickly, which is good, because we're likely to become a two-cat household in a few weeks!

Anyway, I guess I'm just posting this to express my gratitude that everything went well and that my cat actually has pretty decent coping skills.

Wow congrats! Your cat does not seem to mind so much the changes! That is so good!

We have transferred to 3 different apartments within a span of more than a year’s time only, but my cats also do not mind the move or the changes. As long as the food supply does not change, it is fine with them. LOL.

Years ago, we planned to move from NJ to Florida. We had 6 cats which were our "kids" and knew it was going to be a mini-nightmare. Using 6 separate carriers, in the back seat of a ford mustang, and pulling a 15 ft. u-haul...we managed to get our family to our new home. It took an extra day, due to the car needing a transmission cooler, which forced us to unload our kids, detach the u-haul, and stay overnight in Virginia. Needless to say, we have not moved since.

When I got home today she was hanging out on her cat tower looking out the window (luckily it's a good view, like the last apartment. I guess that since I'm here and all of her stuff is here, she's pretty much just accepted that this is where we live now.

Hopefully the new addition in a few weeks goes as smoothly...

You seem very astute about your cat - you have commendable observation & interpretive skills  IMO, if you do encounter any bumps in the road with a new cat, you will turn them into educational experiences, thus expanding your "catspeak" knowledge. :agree:

My cat Sage accompanied me from Coronado, CA, to Show Low, AZ, two years later he & Crackhead traveled with me up into the PNW looking for a fixer home... I drove the rental truck, cats were in the car on a tow dolly behind the truck, windows cracked the whole way, rain or shine. After a short spell in a "cats only" shelter, the kittehs camped with me at Grayland Beach & Bruceport, WA, for over a month. Bruceport has 300' Sitka Spruce trees overlooking Willapa Bay, with HUGE Bald Eagles soaring overhead... luckily, the raptors couldn't maneuver well in the forest, and there was enough undergrowth to provide some protection during the day. Cats spent nights in the car with food, water & litter box, extra blankets and whatnot added for their comfort. And yes, the car was a freakin' mess, LOL. ;)

Following the glamping session, we moved into a cheap rental flat for several months as I continued looking at fixer homes, but I never found one worth buying in my price range... everything was bombed-out and moldy, aye? So we ultimately loaded everything aboard another rental truck and drove BACK to Arizona, go figure... over 1300 miles each way, dragging everything we owned with us. Not recommended, LOL, but we made it... camped below the Stronghold while waiting for escrow to close on this home, same drill with the cats locked down every night. Hopefully, this reply will offer some perspective when it comes to moving with cats... juggling two kittehs while traveling thousands of miles was difficult, but that's what this cat-loving fool did, no way they got left behind. :cool2:

GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR CAT IN YOUR RELOCATION!!! CHEERS!!! :wave3:

Sidewinder Sidewinder - What an interesting story!! I would love to see a thread in the Cat Behavior forums similar to Jcatbird's saga thread "My Rescued and Feral Cats" - a thread that I often peruse for tips and tidbits of random information. (Jcatbird could write a dictionary on "catspeak"). My sister needs to move from TN to CA but just the thought of moving 7 cats and 4 dogs is intimidating.

I left the Socialist Republik of Kalifornia because I could no longer afford it... had my fun in earlier decades before it went downhill, 10-4? Living in AZ is like going back in time, the cost of living here is SO much cheaper... while the sunrises & sunsets are spectacular, LOL. I bought this double-wide with two full-length metal awnings for $36K (paid cash so I'm free & clear), then dumped an additional $5K into carpet, paint, and other home rehab materials. I'm sitting on 1/4 acre (feels larger due to the terraced nature of the hill) with a million-dollar view of Cochise Stronghold from my BBQ deck... fruit trees planted in my yard, a million stars overhead at night, it is PARADISE!!! :yess:

Money just doesn't go as far in Kalifornia, I don't think one can purchase an outhouse in CA for $41K, LOL. I have wide concrete slabs beneath those metal awnings too, so my carport can actually hold three vehicles. The double-wide is 24' x 60', so even with interior walls, cabinetry & whatnot, I still have around 1200 to 1300 square feet of living area... more than enough for a bachelor with three cats, aye? I don't hear the cats complaining, LOL. And my neighborhood is so cool, very quiet and peaceful with zero crime... quite a change from Coronado, I assure you. As a lifelong small craft sailor, I occasionally miss the ocean, but I don't miss living in that overcrowded seaside ghetto. :wave3:

PLENTY OF ROCK CLIMBING & DIRT BIKING TO BE DONE HERE, ALL MINUTES FROM MY HOME, LOL... CHEERS!!! :cool2:

P.S. Maybe your sis should rent a small motorhome for the journey, put all the animals aboard like Noah's Ark, LOL...

We did rent an RV to move her to TN from CA and that is the plan. I don't blame you for leaving SoCal - I tried San Clemente for 9 months but it was too crowded for this ole country gal. Fortunately, LA D.W.P., BLM and USFS own most of the land up here so there remains a lot of public use land (as long as they can hold off resource extraction).
I am starting to meet more cats who travel with their rock climber and explorer guardians. The first "traveler" cat that I met was from Mammoth Lakes and would go backpacking with her folks and her 2 dog brothers. She had spent 2 weeks on PCT and routinely went climbing. She even went sailing out of San Diego! I suppose some kitties are naturally adventurous - she did look as if she had a significant amount of Maine Coon.
Your place sounds wonderful! We love pics of the cats!!

Wow, so many stories! Thanks for the replies and encouragement, everyone. Little kitty is still doing fine. She's playful and extra demanding; maybe wanting a little extra reassurance, or maybe just being a diva like she always is. Either way, this humble servant can only oblige! She's also found some new perches that she seems to really like; guess I won't be putting decorations on that mantle after all!

I've got new rugs and a new chair and she's obsessed with all of them.

She's also started showing interest in what's outside the door. She's never been crazy about going outside on a leash, but she loves to explore the hallways of apartment buildings, so maybe I'll take her on a little indoor adventure soon.

Thanks again for everyone's interest!
