Hello, I have a cat with 5 around 8 week old kittens, and she keeps bringing home prey for the kittens. She does not eat this prey, and she eats the food we leave out for the kittens instead. is there any way we can stop this behavior and have her leave the kittens their food instead?

You must keep the mother cat 100% indoors to stop this. She also needs spaying now to prevent a back to back pregnancy. Do you need help locating a low-cost spay clinic in your area? If so, please state your city and state.

Are the kittens eating plenty of both wet and dry food? They will need spaying and neutering soon too.

Keep mom inside until you can spay her! Not only will this prevent another pregnancy, but it will prevent her from bringing in pests and diseases from the outdoors that could affect the kittens.

Going along with what my fellow posters said, there's no way to prevent this except for keeping her indoors. All cats will hunt if given the chance, and mother cats bring prey to the kittens (either already dead, or partially killed) as a sort of hunting lesson.

Look at this so; this shows she is an excellent mother. :) You have seen something most of us dont see easily.
Even if this behavior is less practical here, and thus, unwished...

Your cat is doing exactly what she is supposed to be doing. She is providing for her young and teaching them how to fend for themselves and what is good for them to eat. Real mice are one of the best foods that they can eat. There is no processed cat food that is as good as live mice. Also, kittens that are never taught by their moms how to hunt will never learn it later.
