Hello,

I was posting in the kitten forum about our cat who had kittens. She is a Maine Coon. The 5 kittens are all doing well and weigh between 209 and 262 grams at 5 days old. However, today I noticed that Zoe's face was quite swollen on one side. She is not acting in distress and feeding and nursing. I pressed that side and she didn't react. Any advice?

Is she eating normally? Has she let you check her teeth? Could be an abscess or some other dental issue.

Yes, she is eating fine. My guess is a dental issue as well. Haven't checked her teeth. She is nursing the kittens now. It came on very suddenly.

I just checked her teeth. Don't see anything. She isn't reacting when I press it. Maybe it will just go away?

Not something I’d risk sitting on, personally. Could be caused by anything from a rotting or infected tooth root to a cat bite, insect sting, a tumour (though unlikely with super sudden onset to get to the size), or a foreign object. All of these except, perhaps an insect sting need vet intervention. Even then, cats can have allergies to those and need vet attention anyway.

Imo she needs a full dental examination and potentially an X-ray by a dental specialist, as well as a FNA of the lump.

I just opened her mouth again and it looks fine to me but I am not an expert. She just ate some food and is acting normally.

Okay, my husband just said she was in the garden with him and was playing with a bee and then she ran away from it. My guess is that she was stung.

2.5 hours later- swelling looks better I think. Phew! Thanks for all the quick responses. This site is very helpful.

My grandmothers cat had this happen to her. It ended up being some kind of cancer. I def would take her to the vet because hers passed away!

Thank you. I just looked and didn't see any stinger. She is continuing to eat and act normally and frequently nurse her kittens. I still see some swelling but not as much. Here she is now.
