Hiya guys,

New to the cat world. I have always been a dog person but I discovered that I like these sweethearts too. I was wondering - which breeds are considered the most sensitive and smart in the world to humans?

Thanks

Hi, and welcome to TCS! Are you talking about buying a cat from a breeder, with pedigree papers, or just adopting a cat from a shelter or rescue? I know nothing of the former, but the latter group of cats are generally considered domestic short or long haired cats (DSH or DLS) and are typically of no specific breed, unlike many dogs. The coloring and pattern of their coats are nothing more than that, and don't really often have anything to do with their nature, IMO. Sure, some of them can have some degree of breed in them dating back generations, but with no pedigree papers, they would still be considered domestic cats. So, an orange tabby can't be categorized as more/less sensitive or smart than a bi-colored cat, a calico, tortoiseshell, etc. I have had and been around all kinds of cat colors/patterns and have not found any one to have certain traits based on that. Some might disagree, and others might tell you that female cats are more 'feisty' in nature than males, which I also can't attest to based on the cats I have been around.

I truly believe each cat is unique in terms of personality. If you get a kitten, you might have more influence on things about their personality/behavior than you might if you adopt an adult, because in the latter some of their personality/behavior has already been established. Sometimes, cats who are being or have been raised with other cats might tend to be less affectionate, as they have a relationship with those 'of their kind', but that is not a hard and fast rule either.

Sorry if that doesn't help any. I am sure others will come along and share their opinions with you too!

I'm not sure there are sensitive cat breeds, though it depends on what you mean by "sensitive" but cats aren't really sensitive like dogs are. Dogs tend to live to please you and can get upset if you get mad at them, most cats live to be pleased, lol.

As for smartest breed, hands down I would say the Abyssinian is the smartest, and are considered by some to be the "border collie" breed of the cat world. The Siamese and Balinese (long haired Siamese) are also normally high up on "smart breeds" lists, along with the wild cat mixes like the Bengal and Savannah. All cats are individuals though, just like dogs they don't all conform to breed standard, so just because it's a specific breed doesn't mean it's going to be exactly like every (or any) other of that breed. You can get smart ones and dumb ones of the same breed.

Thanks guys.

Yes, I'm planning on buying a cat from a breeder.

Now I'm just more confused lol.. I really thought that cats breeds have specific features exactly like dogs breeds.

I'd say to look up cat breeds, to see what is listed as their demeanor traits, and see what appeals to you most and then go from there in finding a breeder for that specific breed. Breeders are usually breed specific, just like dogs, so you kind of need to know what breeds you like first, and then find breeders in your area. This listing isn't going to give you everything, but it might be a start, especially if you are looking more from the personality perspective than the appearance - even in a single breed the coloring/pattern can vary. I am sure others might have links to different web sites, perhaps better than this one.

I think one big difference between cats and dogs is cats were never breed for anything specific like dogs were. Historically dogs were bred for specific purposes, hunting, herding, guarding, companionship, etc. Cats on the other hand beyond being pets pretty much were only kept for one "job", hunt and kill mice, rats, and other vermin that would otherwise eat and destroy the food supply, which really hasn't changed since their wild ancestors. Most cat breeds were created within the last couple hundred years (though some are much older) purely for looks. In many cases basically a unique looking kitten, or kittens, are born in a litter, someone likes the look and a new breed is created using it as a starting point. Or in the case of the wild cat mixes, they try to create a cat that looks similar to a wild cat but with the temperament of a domestic cat.
