Cat has been missing fur on a quarter size spot and what is like a scabby area. Been there at least a month.
Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to TCS! No other spots anywhere else? Is this on a front or back leg? Possibly in the 'elbow' area? Just curious if your cat has been resting on something, perhaps a newer location for them, causing a pressure point.

area is an inch or two above front paw. No known reason for it and it doesn't seem to bother him at all

It is puzzling that it appears scabby, which means he is either biting at it when grooming, or because it itches. I only say that because if it were something like ringworm, it likely would have spread over the course of a month. Maybe he got a scratch and using his litter box, with dust and dirt, is keeping it irritated. Just too many possibilities.

I'd say keep an eye on it - and him to see if you can catch him biting at it, and make sure you don't see it spreading or becoming an actual open sore/wound. Anything about it that gets worse, then you are probably going to have to have the vet check it out.

You could try chamomile tea, just to see if it would help clear it up. Buy chamomile tea bags - you can find them in most any grocery store and generally speaking those are Germain - you don't want English or any flavorings or additives. Brew a bag in water, cool the liquid to room temp and then apply some to that spot with a soft cloth or cotton balls a few times a day. Chamomile tea is a soothing and healing agent, as well as having anti-bacterial/anti-fungal properties. It is safe for your cat to ingest if that should happen.
