This morning around 10:00am, I held my beloved dog Macy as she took her last breaths. I am absolutely devistated and torn up right now. :( She was such an amazing, loyal friend to me. I will always cherish the time I had with her. :rbheart:

When I adopted her, I went in looking for a healthy dog suitable for therapy work, and instead came out of the shelter with sweet Macy (A hospice dog). I fell in love with her from the moment I met her, knew that my home would be perfect for her. We really had a special bond because we both had heart issues. (I adopted her 2 weeks after my heart procedure in Aug 2010). Her vets/specialists at the shelter, and the ones I took her to diagnosed her with 5/6 heart murmur,Patent Ductus Arteriosus, Subaortic Stenosis, Pulmonic Stenosis, Pulmonary Edema, & Cardiomegaly. Surgery wasn't an option; she wouldn't survive anestesia. Even if she could, if they fixed one problem, they would worsen others. Medicine gave her little relief, so over the past few months, her specialists pulled her off of the meds and told me just to keep her happy and comfortable and that she would let me know when it was her time. I knew that it would happen eventually and that saying goodbye was inevitable...it just really caught me off guard today and was completly heartbreaking to watch, knowing that there was nothing I could do to save her. Most pups with complications like Macy had don't survive birth, so having her as long as I did was really a blessing. Macy made my life better with her sweet, gentle spirit. She played "momma" to my youngest Australian Shepherd/therapy-dog-in-training, and she was a loyal companion to my older Aussie and registered therapy dog, Ranger. Macy herself would have been an incredible therapy dog had she been healthy enough for it. Instead, she had the great honor of helping me train other dogs and prep them. I know that my Aussies wouldn't be as incredible as they are today in their therapy work/training, were it not for Macy's positive influence. My three cats adored her as well. Macy was so gentle and kind with every single creature and person she met. She was the most fantastic ambassador for the Pit Bull (x) breed that a handler could hope for! I feel so blessed that I got to call her my dog! :heart2:

My guess is that all of her heart conditions just got the best of her today and were too much for her to handle any longer. (She was laying in the floor by me when it happened). I knew her time was limited when I adopted her, but it still didn't change how much I loved her. Macy was an incredible dog! :rbheart:

Nikki, I'm so sorry to hear about Macy. She was too young to leave you, but hopefully it's some consolation that the time she did have was filled with happiness and purpose. RIP, sweetie.

Thank you so much :hugs: She was definitely too young to leave me. I'm just glad that if it had to happen, I was at least home and able to hold her so that she wasn't alone. My dad (who helped me take her yesterday to the Humane Society where I had adopted her from) said that if I hadn't brought her home, she likely would have died a long ago in the shelter, all alone. Before I adopted her, Macy had lived over 2 years at the Humane Society; she had five "strikes" against her 1. She was solid black (they have a harder time finding homes usually) 2. She was a Pit Bull x 3. She was in heart failure 4. She was an adult dog and not a "puppy" 5. She was terrified of everything (dogs that will generally come around with positive reinforcement and confidence building, often get overlooked in a big shelter for the more "outgoing" dogs.)

I saw potential in her though, and I know the staff there did as well (they held onto her for over 2 years, and would have kept her for her entire lifespan if I didn't get her.) I'm just glad that even though I didn't have her for as long as I would have liked to, I had a fantastic year and a half with her and was able to spoil and love her! My sweet girl will always have a special place in my heart. :rbheart:

Thank you so much, girl :hugs: She was definitely the little fluffy "daughter" that I needed! She really helped me through some difficult things in the time that I had her. I feel very lucky that I was able to have called her mine. :rbheart:

Oh no Nikki, I am so so sorry for your loss :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:
Even though we know about all their problems when they come to us, they are still our babies, and we never expect this day to come..... We just love them to much to even think about that..... :bawling:
Just know that you were the best mommy for her, and she couldn't be more loved, and have had a better life than she had with you..... She was a lucky little girl :heart3:

Hang in there :grphug2:
RIP sweet little Macy :rbheart:

Fairly new here, but your love for Macy and her love for you are evident.

RIP sweet puppy. Now you are free and healthy, never to be bothered by a heart that doesn't work right at the Rainbow Bridge.

She is a beautiful dog and clearly, had a beautiful spirit, too.

Niki I'm so shocked and saddened to hear about Macy. I know how much she meant to you and how involved you were in giving her (as you do all your pets) the best life she could have. I didn't realize how serious her condition was though and I'm so sorry you only had 1 1/2 years with her. You know without a doubt that those were the best times of her life, and I'm just sorry you didn't have longer with her. :rbheart:

And what a beautiful life it was, too short, but filled with joyful, happy days. Memories to last a lifetime. My heart goes out to you :heart3: :vibes: She was a beautiful girl and is now a beautiful angel  :angel3: :rbheart:

Thank you everyone for the kind words and support. :hugs: I am still so upset over the loss of my sweet, sweet Macy. My other dogs have taken it pretty hard as well; we all miss our sweet girl and the liveliness she brought into our home! It's hard to believe that it will be one month this week that she's been gone. :heart3:
