Updating our saga about our Maine Coon kittens goopy eye situation.

Took her this morning to see the ophthalmologist specialist recommended by our vet. A bit of a drive but was not terrible - Luna usually freaks out being put into the carrier and isn't good on rides but was shockingly well behaved today.

Vet's office was nicest we've ever seen. Really A+. Was taken within minutes and the doctor was warm, pleasant, efficient and had a good manner with Luna too. It was the most relaxed we've seen her at a vet visit; they dimmed the lights, wrapped her in a warmed towel which soothed her.

He did a thorough eye exam, asked us to explain her health history. Said there was absolutely no structural problems with her eyes at all and in general her eyes looked pretty good other than the staining which he concurs is most likely due to the herpes virus as our regular vet suspected. She thought perhaps that her tear ducts might be partially blocked but he said they are fine so that was a relief.

Anyway, the virus as I'm sure many know can cause excess tears but there is this whole cause and effect thing that happens that is too technical for me to explain (look it up) which causes excess tears to weep from the eyes which is what we see crusting around her. He prescribed a medicated eye lubricant which we're to use for 2 weeks, 2x a day and then back off for a few days. If it returns, same cycle until it gets to a point where hopefully the excess tearing stops happening.

The medication will help heal what's happening to the eyeball/cornea that the virus attacks (again pardon my inexact wording - just got home and I have to dash out again so I'm writing this fast) and is also cosmetic since the excess tear production will stop and yay! No more staining (hopefully) so when I take photos of Luna I will be able to stop having to photoshop out the goopies LOL.

Anyway, we're relieved it wasn't anything too serious and didn't cost us a bundle either. Specialist visit was $185 which wasn't awful and with the medication was just over $200ish. And, if anyone needs a emergency/specialty vet and is willing to drive a bit (or lucky enough to live nearby) they are in Tinton Falls NJ I highly recommend this practice - Garden State Veterinary Specialists on Pine Street.

In other news Luna has figured out how to open several drawers, and is tall enough to reach over our kitchen counter and a living room shelf unit where she can now pick off interesting non-cat friendly items. So we're in the middle of another go-round of cat-proofing LOL

I am so happy to hear that this is now named and treatable! I know you are beyond relieved!

As for the cat-proofing, you might think about ordering museum putty. It will stick almost anything to almost anything, but will not damage surfaces. The name says it all...it is used in museums to secure fragile items to shelves so that they won't fall off. VERY popular in earthquake zones, and with cat owners (which can feel like the same thing, come to think of it!).

Great idea! I had moved the breakables off that one shelf but I'll tell you, she also keeps eyeing our fireplace mantle. There's a table near it that she likes to sit on and she can nearly stretch to reach it now though I doubt she can leap onto to it - there really isn't any room for her to make the landing; its not very wide and it's filled up but I bet she'd give it at least one good shot before she falls to the floor along with everything on it. Def going to find some of stuff!
