We laid our Luna down to rest yesterday afternoon. There was no question in my mind it was the right thing to do. She quickly took a turn for the worse only just a few days ago and she could no longer eat or get up from her bed without crying out in pain. We had only just found out the weekend prior that she had bladder cancer and it took her in what felt like the blink of an eye. I miss her so much. Today has been rough for me finding myself expecting to see her in all of her favorite spots in the house or out in the garden. But in a way I am happy and relieved that she is no longer in pain.

Luna was a very special kitty. We all say this about our cats because they all are special to us. She was special to me in so many ways.

In the summer of 2018, after getting engaged to my now husband, my cat Paprika (the kitty in my profile picture) passed away. She was almost 18 and had fought CKD very bravely for years. I had her in my life since I was a weird teen of 15. Losing her was so hard and I would cry often for her.

Three months later, my fiance came upon two kitties that needed a home as their mom went into hospice and noone in her family wanted the cats. These two kitties were being kept in a bathroom in my in-laws barn. I went to meet them.

One kitty was this goofy looking fluffy boy. He was called James at the time. I could tell he was confused as to where he was. He almost seemed stunned. The other kitty name Ada at the time was this beautiful tortie who my fiance said was magical. She would appear out of nowhere sometimes. She was magical because she found a secret hole behind the toilet that led her into the rest of the barn where she could hunt. She was sneaking in and out without them noticing at first haha. Because she would do these things, my fiance thought she would be perfect for me.

I decided to take them both home and rename them Spock and Luna. Spock because he had pointy ears like his namesake and Luna because she was magical and different like Luna Lovegood.

They lived with me in my one bedroom apartment for a year until we bought a house and they became our cats. Spock was a goofy boy who loved sitting in laps for snuggles. He unfortunately was only with us for 4 years before his heart gave out. The vet estimated that he was 15 years old. We still talk about him often.

Luna became my little buddy. She would come sit with me when I was reading or writing. She would go out into the garden with me and just hang out beside me. Peter my husband would say she was my familiar.

She was such a good, smart cat. I swear she understood everything I would say to her. When people would come over, she would greet them and almost ask for pets. When we got two dogs, she would help us train them.

This past year she struggled with her health off and on. She first was diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease and then pancreatitis. Then reoccurring UTIs.

In August, my daughter was born and she gave her head butts when we brought her home from the hospital. So loving and sweet.

At the beginning of this month, we found blood in her urine so she received more antibiotics for what we all thought were reoccurring UTIs because she was a female cat with IBD. This past weekend we woke up to several puddles of bloody urine, so I went to the nearest ER vet where they found masses in her bladder via an ultrasound. We were going to take her to our regular vet for followup and referral to a specialist but her body gave out. She quickly was taken over by the cancer and we had to take her in so she could pass peacefully instead of in the agony she was in.

I am still in shock that she was taken from us so quickly. There is never enough time with our cherished pets. I will always remember her as my familiar. My special girl, little Luney. RIP 💔

I am so sorry for the loss of your Luna:hugs:. People that have never had Cats, probably don’t realize how special they are😭😭. You know what? I’m not sure where you’re located, but there’s something called Etsy. You can go on their site and look up pet Memorials and have something special made. Bless you❤

Thank you for sharing your story and about Luna's life and legacy. She was with you through some special times in your life. A common thread throughout is our pets sometimes. We keep them alive when we still talk about them. Conjuring the sweet memories keeps them around. Deep condolences to you and your family!

I'm so sorry for the loss of your lovely Luna. I know that shock, my Katie died two weeks after her cancer diagnosis. I cannot praise you enough for recognising what was happening and acting on Luna's behalf to spare her more pain. It's the last, hardest, thing we can do for them.

Luna sounds like a distant sister to my Phoebe. She's also a tortie (dilute), has IBD (mild and lifelong in her case) and thinks the only reason humans come to my unit is to make friends with her.

My heart goes out to you......you have so many wonderful memories, I pray they help to bring you comfort in the years to come.
You saved those two little ones. They will both be forever grateful to you and your husband and will always love you all the more for it. You built a bond of love between you all that is spiritaul, so eternal. Their little souls will forever parallel your own as you navigate through your life's journey.
Luna had a special attachment to you it sounds like, you gave her all she ever wanted in this world, a home, care, and most importantly, someone to love her.
For now, try not to dwell on her end, it was but a moment of her life. think of all the good memeories she left you with, and everntually your pain will turn into gratitude that she gave you such a precious gift in this world, a cat's heart......
I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers, may you find ccomfort in the support of your family, and knowing we all here at this site empathize with your grief.....RIP precious Luna. You will always be rememebered, you will forever have secure places in loving hearts. May the good Lord bless and keep you, until you meet again!

Thank you everyone for the kind words. Today has been a little easier. I spent the day with my daughter and two pups watching dumb TV that kept my mind occupied. Tonight we're having some friends over and will be raising a glass to Luna as they really loved her as well 💕.

Rest you gentle, Luna, dream you deep. Your purr echos in someone's heart forever.

What a lovely, long life she had with you. But where there is love, an eternity is not long enough, is it? But your next meeting, in the fullness of time, will give you your eternity! This is the deepest truth I know, that love never dies. It is translated and purified into Love, and continues on. Now, from her new home in That Place Where All Things Are Known, Luna blesses you, and she sends her Love back to walk with you down through all of your days. Because Love abides. Always, forever, Love abides.

Scientists have actually proven that cats actually can understand every word we tell them, they just don’t always care. So, she knew she was loved. That’s all any of us truly need. You gave her the same gift she gave you. You did good. We’re here for you.
