I currently have two litter boxes for two cats. This has worked just fine. Over Christmas, I received a lovely litter cabinet that encloses the box. The kitties enter and exit from the side.

I’d like to just use the cabinet…it holds a very large tray. I know people advise having number of cats +1 boxes, but does anyone have two cats that share a litter box?

Carl started using the new one right away, but I was afraid to get rid of the other one and Phoebe is still using it.

Any advice or anecdotes welcome. Thank you!

I actually have one box for three cats. It's a large 50 gallon tote that I cut a hole in the side; it's big enough for all three cats to do their business at the same time if they wanted to (They don't).
It's serving really well for the cats, neither of them are complaining about sharing it. I just scoop often.

Previously I had a smaller standard size box with two cats and no issues either.

When I adopted the boys, I had an extra box- had to when they were in the bathroom and couldn't access the main one. When they were fully out of the bathroom, I gradually moved the extra box closer to the main over the course of a week or so and reduced the litter to make it less usable.
Of course, Rembrandt only started using the main box when I took the other away completely.

I'd say try it. If an issue arise and they don't want to share, or prefer a second box for whatever reasons, then you can always add it back.

All cats are different. If they tolerate it, they tolerate it, and the recommendation being different is irrelevant.

I currently use a setup & scooping frequency that many of my prior cats would not tolerate.

I wouldn't remove the one Phoebe is still using, unless you are willing to take a chance on cleaning up pee off the flooring, or any other 'alternative' options she might choose to use. Some cats can be pretty particular when it comes to litter box types. Is there any reason you can't have two, since you had two to begin with?

My experience is that I had more problems with the cabinet than it was worth. Usually the cabinets have a little space around the box and any sort of spray lands there.

But if that has been the only issue, I'd have dealt. What I did find a problem is that a covered box allowed a kitty to be startled coming out by the other kitty. Even the best behaved and biggest buddies can have this happen and it can cause litter box aversion.

In that case, having that second box is super helpful as a "safe space" where a kitty can go without being startled.
