I had serious problems with Adams product years ago, so will not use. I have always used, and trusted, Advantage. No other topical for my cats. Others I've tried have not been as effective. For the environment, I trust FleaBusters. It is a borax-based product that kills the eggs as well as other stages. It is highly effective used as directed, safe, and long-lasting.
I was given a recommendation for flea busters from the local BARF. I think I’ll try that.

Aside from yesterday, I believe they bother me more than her. She doesn’t seem bothered today, not itching, since the Capstar and a change of bedding.

Earlier in the summer, definitely she needed the mirtazapine to overcome the flea blues.

Today, she needs stronger pain relief than the buprenorphine is giving her. I am 96% certain her remaining teeth (or gums) are bothering her based on how she responds to medication.

I am now feeding her anywhere she will take a meal. Because if I have to wait for her to come down to the plates, it could be awhile. I just gave her the bupe an hour ago so she should be good to eat all but two grams.

She always leaves about two grams worth. So I pad her portions by 2 grams and stop arguing with her.

To be sure though, the quarter oz portions earlier were padded out to 10 or 11 grams so I’ll still give her credit for this half oz.

I think there was another half ounce between the last one I recorded here.

So I think we’re at 2.5 oz for the day so far.

I need to revive her food journal spreadsheet. I used to keep such detailed notes on every meal. Then she stopped finishing her meals in one sitting. Now she only finishes the homemade in the sitting I plate. If she left 3 g, she’s not coming back for them.

This cat! She’s on to me!

“If he plates three grams over, I’m going to pull up 4 g short.” 🤦🏼‍♂️

I’m on to her. I gave her the (bupe transdermal) wet willy and into the Loop tree she fled. So I turned on the Loop. She gets a two-fer. 😻

Or not.

She just came back from that tree. That was maybe five minutes.
🤦🏼‍♂️
And so it goes. Our little arms race. We each try to get out ahead of the other. She keeps me thinking creatively.
🧐😼

She got through 3 oz of the homemade today. I still may get up and plate her another half oz sometime before morning. But she may also make up that last half oz to get her to 4 through her overnight nibbling. Or if not, 3 to 3.5 oz is not bad for her first day home. I’m sure she did not eat that much on her own while she was at the vet’s this past weekend. I’m not even sure she ate that much the whole weekend.

I’m also still a little traumatized from her clostridium days. And nights. The sound of her in a litterbox at night still has me the power to pull me out of bed—and sometimes out of sleep—to follow her to the boxes to see if there was anything alarming. I’m proud to report her kidneys are still working great! Same concentrated pee ball she’s left me overnight for the last thirteen years.
🐪 😹

She had a soft poop in the box earlier while I was out. This just confirms to me that we won’t be using the whipped cream cheese trick for pilling anymore. Even the little amount I was giving her has too much xanthan gum for her. Tiki Cat Velvet Mousse and Mousse toppers have xanthan gum and it’s mousse in, mousse out with those too.
🤦🏼‍♂️🙊

Her next poop though. It is going to be raw perfect from all the homemade she’s had.🐈 💩👍

Do you have any suspicion maybe the dental operations she gets do more harm than good? No way I can know about Krista at all of course, this was something I consider about my (senior) dog though. Pros-cons calculation changed when he became a senior and how he responds to operations, his bone strength, etc

She can’t continue like this if she can’t eat enough. This wouldn’t be her first dental procedure by a long shot. She’s good with those. She bounces back in a day or three.

And anyway. If there’s risk, that’s why we’re seeing a board certified veterinary dentist. This is a specialist above and beyond a DVM.

“Why are you doing laps over me?”

“Oh! oh! I know this one. This is a feed me song and dance. Yeah. Alright. I don’t care that it’s 4 and that you still have Rawz to nibble. If you’ll eat, I’ll feed you.”

image.jpg

Worth it!

“Still hungry? Yeah. Alright. I don’t sleep if you don’t sleep.”

As I was getting ready to wash that plate, she was camping out at my feet in the kitchen. A hungry cat does that. A satiated cat uses the litterbox and then goes to sleep. I plated another quarter oz and that hit the spot. The second plate looked like the first when I pulled it back up. Not even worth weighing the remains.

And now she sleeps in her perch in the office and I get to wind myself down back to sleep with a little murder porn (“true crime”) tv.

21 grams for breakfast this morning. I haven't even given her the wet willy. I wonder if it just took awhile for the morning mirtazapine to finally kick in. She also finished about 2/3 of the ounce of Rawz duck I had plated last night before bedtime. 1/4 ounce remained when I picked it up this morning. I'll be reviving her food tracker spreadsheet today. I'll get meat back on her bones.

See? This is a cat who wants to live and enjoy life with you! You know her games and you know how to do subterfuge! ;)
I'm a true crime junkie too. ID is the reason I pay way too much for TV.

Tell that to my mom. Every time I talk to her about Krista she wants to take the conversation to quality of life. She'll often start that conversation with, "how old is she again?"

"In cat years? Same as you. I would choose your next words wisely." ;)

She just finished another half ounce. I plated 24 grams. I'm hoping she'll eat 7 more before I pick up the plate. I can let her slide on the insurance grams if we can just get up to 1.5 oz before I have to leave for the office today. I don't know that 4 oz a day is enough. But it's a base we can build on. Let's aim for that until we can aim for something higher.

Well, you know what they say about opinions, and that is hers. Yours, on the other hand, is based on how she responds to you and her actions on a daily basis. ;)

A little later than I hoped, a lot earlier than I expected, we have made it to two ounces today! I can leave her to sleep and nibble the afternoon away. I feel pretty confident that we will get the remaining 2 ounces (and then some!) in her before first breakfast tomorrow.

I haven't even given her the wet willy yet today. Since she will likely spend the rest of the afternoon sleeping, I'll see how she does on first dinner before I give her another bupe. She may or may not need it as much as I think she does. If I can get away with not giving it to her all the time, then I would like to save it for when she really needs it.

Again, still trying to catch up on your thread...but, I read so much in your posts that sounds a lot like Feeby. There are times I am feeding her at 2am in order to get what I think is the minimum she should have in a day. I feed her pretty much where ever she is - I can't afford to wait for her to appear interested. (Although, the first meal of the day, she waits on her coffee table station - and today I was a bit slow once I got up before I fed her, and she let me know about it.)

I start by giving her 1/4 can of food (1.3 - 1.4 oz) and after a bit, as she slows down toward the end, I add another 1/4 can. Then, as she slows down on that, out come the 'flavor enhancers' to get her to finish. I am using Gerber baby food meats - but will move to BeechNut baby food meats since they have NO cornstarch added to them - only meat, period. I can get her over the 'hump' with the baby meat, and maybe have to toss a small, small amount out at the end. This goes on 4 times a day, although I can't always get 1/2 can down her each time. So, she ends up on average with about 8.25 oz of canned food a day, on the 'optimistic' side.

I tried the Only Natural Pet bone broth - the vote between Feeby and me is "Meh". So, yes, there you have it on store bought bone broth.
If I can pull it off with the baby meat foods to get her to finish her meals, I will be OK with that.

I know Krista has the added issue with her teeth. But, tbh, despite our different tactics in food treatments, she sounds a whole lot like Feeby in terms of everything else.

I've been keeping up with Feeby's thread and thinking the same for awhile. Every time I think to reply, I have to remind myself, this is Feeby's thread and Krista has her own. Unless of course I believe a tip from Krista would be helpful with Feeby.

Because of Krista's IBD and her teeth, I'm less inclined to pull out the enticement arsenal at the moment. She's never been a fan of baby food either. I think Feeby is twice the cat as Krista and I prefer to feed her 8 oz a day. But then I've always been trying to put weight back on her. For now, I'll take 4 oz a day because that's 3% of her bodyweight. I will aim for that each day for the rest of this week and weigh her again on Monday. If she's still losing weight, we'll try for 6 oz.

Try the homemade meat stock. You can get a crock pot for $40 or less and it couldn't be easier with one of those. Strip most of the meat off the bones, cover with water, set the time and temp (low) and come back when you are ready to strain it and clean up. It will shift to "warm" setting when it is done with the cooking program. It's even easier with an Instant Pot. I can turn out a batch of stock from meaty bones to stock in the fridge in under two hours.
